Purple fringing against overcast clouds

Hey all!

Just got my Hero 7 black yesterday and went to test it outdoors (I installed 1.70 before using the camera). The spring is only just kicking in here, so we had overcast clouds without much sunlight here. Video and timewarp looked fantastic but when shooting in super photo mode I noticed that there is heavy purple fringing around thin branches that are shot against the clouds. Anyone else getting this with their 7 black? Can this be something wrong with the sensor on my device, or is this something GoPro might need to look into for a future update?

Thanks.

Re: Purple fringing against overcast clouds

Hi @agilestorm88630,

The visible heavy purple on your photos is something is could be related to an image quality issue on your camera. Though your HERO7 Black camera is already up-to-date, re-flashing the camera's firmware can help correct any errors with the current software installation. Please follow the manual update instructions specified on this article: Software Update Instructions for HERO7 Cameras

  • NOTE: Make sure the UPDATE folder is unzipped/extracted, before placing it on the SD card. If the folder is compressed, the camera will not be able to read it.
  • Ensure the UPDATE folder does not have any additional characters in the folder title, i.e. "UPDATE (1)". The camera will only recognize a folder titled "UPDATE", in upper case letters with no additional characters.

If in case the problem persists after reinstalling the firmware of your camera, given that this is a recent purchase and out-of-the-box issue, kindly reach out to the retailer so they can help you with the next steps.

Hopefully this helps!

Re: Purple fringing against overcast clouds

Thanks very much for your reply! I just installed the update according to these instructions, all went well. I tried to photograph my hand against a bright indoor light and see no fringing regardless of the angle the camera is placed at against the light - maybe this does mean that all is correctly calibrated now, but I will do some outdoors testing tomorrow and will let you know! In any case, yeah, it's pretty much just out of the box and I still have 12 more days to make sure it's alright. Love it BTW, it's incredible.

Re: Purple fringing against overcast clouds

Today I did more testing after the manual update to 1.70. This picture below is the worst I could get it to behave - fringing is pretty much not noticeable but there is some ghosting/doubling which is kind of expected on such a wide lens. Generally speaking I would never shoot in such poor lighting conditions, and 5-6 more shots I took look much better than this one. Which means I should have no more concerns about my GoPro, but can you please confirm? :-)

Re: Purple fringing against overcast clouds

Here is another shot just for comparison - same spot, just aimed differently to capture more light, much sharper and no fringing or ghosting at all.

Re: Purple fringing against overcast clouds

Are you shooting in SuperPhoto, HDR, RAW, Protune, or with all of these off? Also, is it hand held or on a tripod? "Ghosting" is usually a result of HDR and movement of either the camera or subject (even if it's very slight movement).

Re: Purple fringing against overcast clouds

This is in SuperPhoto and handheld. Yeah I know these results are expected - and like I said, this is one of 10 shots I made and the only one of them that has this ghosting/fringing (as you see in the second shot it's all good).

HI

I downloaded your pic and zoom in I see the problem. This is HDR photo (makes 3 photos with different exposure and blend it to one) and between frames was a little movement plus CHROMATIC ABERRATION maks this annoying effect its like triple powered by HDR.

Solution: Use tripod to do not shake. This effect is cause by camera.
