Omni for 3D video?

Hello,

I'm building a camera rig for 3D field recording of animals. Essentially, this requires the synchronization and multiple camera management the Omni uses for 360, but instead of aiming outward the cameras will all focus inward on a central point. That means that the cameras must be further apart, but can be connected to the power and electronics at a central point.

1) Could the Omni be modified to do this? Perhaps with a custom cable connecting the port to each camera?

2) Is there another solution for frame synchronization or genlock of multiple gopros? The syncbac device is not ideal, because it only adds timecode metadata.

Re: Omni for 3D video?

I have been doing a lot of 3d with gopro.  You have a couple options.  If you are just doing 2 cameras and the separation needed is the typical 70mm area, you can use the gopro dual hero back and open up one of the housings and move the cable to the other side.  This gives you the reach to have the lenses further apart.  The dual hero system genlocks the cameras.  That rig would require hero 3+blacks.  That is the only model supported by the gopro dual hero.  I have years of 3d video shot with a rig like this.  I also replaced the lenses with 5.4mm focal length.  That gives you a 30mm equivalent field of view.  Essentially, that gives you a very good 3d camera.

The other option is to use mew pro.  I have a pair of hero 4 cameras using that rig.  You can make your widths any length you want because you have to build the sync device from a kit.  It works, but there are a host of issues.  If you need 4k at 30fps though, it works.  This also will genlock the cameras.  With the mew pro and bastet rig, you can use multiple cameras, so you dont have to just do a pair of cams, you can sync many up.

Re: Omni for 3D video?

I don't see how the Omni could be used to do this type of shot, but the Kolor software might be able to process it. Also, there are third party motion-capture systems that have been developed that might help with this.
