No settings menu on the front LCD

I'm trying to find the way to turn on and off WiFi when using the "Super Suit" and it seems impossible, with previous models of GoPro cameras the Settings menu was accesible by using the power button to cycle through camera modes, but the only modes I get with this camera are Video, Photo, Burst and Time Lapse, that's all, so how on Earth can I turn on or off the WiFi?

Rant, I mean, feedback for GoPro:

To be honest I regret buying the Hero 5, first off, I bought it for my girlfriend so she could take it on a trip, the camera didn't work because it said Card error so for her entire trip it was nothing but dead weight in her luggage. The card was one of the reccommended models, after buying THREE more microSD cards jumping through all the hoops GoPro suggested and still being unable to use the camera finally took it back to the shop, they changed the camera and this one worked. It would had saved me a lot of frustration if GoPro would acknowledge that the microSD error problem can be with the camera itself.

Secondly, I didn't research on the camera before buying it, I bought Hero's before and been thoroughly satisfied with them so I expected the same, that was a mistake. I found out now the underwater housing ("Super Suit") has to be bought separately, so extra expense, using it is more complicated because now I can't just put it in the housing have to first struggle to remove the front lens cover (which sooner or later will get lost) But the worst thing I found out is that now GoPro has removed the composite video output from the camera, that was a primary function for me because I used them on FPV drones, just for that the Hero 5 is pretty much useless to me.

Thirdly, I find the requirement to be online to use GoPro applications them absurd (to say nothing of the spyware nature of those apps), a typical application for my previous GoPro cameras is being on a boat in the middle of nowhere, or while travelling in some remote place, or just travelling somewhere where I don't have access to internet, so no connectivity with a phone, can't use the Quik application on my laptop, etc,etc... all because GoPro wants my camera to tell them where I go and what I do, PLEASE STOP THIS.

Fourthly... more troubles... Quik can't connect with the camera on my PC (didn't bother to try on my laptops, battery draining when the camera is OFF, the difficulty of openning the camera covers (even the people at the shop had troubles with that), problems updating the firmware, problems connecting to a phone, now this issue with WiFi and the "Super Suit"... just problems and more problems.

My friends know I'm a GoPro enthusiast, that's why in the few weeks since I bought the Hero 5 I had two of them ask me about buying the same camera, sorry GoPro, I told them not to bother and buy something else; in my experience the Hero 5 is just aggravating to use and I don't reccommend it.
I'm a technically skilled person, as mentioned I have other GoPro cameras for several years and still with this model I've had nothing but dissapointments, frustrations and struggles to deal with.

Sorry to hear about that @coolsand52367.

Try doing a long press on the mode button and see if

that brings up the wifi settings or enables it.

This 5 is my first and I'm thrilled with the video quality but that's about it.

Curious, did you format the card in the camera?  That seems to be an issue with a lot of things that use memory cards.

I feel like I should have waited for the bugs to get ironed out or the next gen, and I agree, the doors are a real pita to open.

Mine had an audio issue on the fost day I used it and they just replaced it.....but it looks like it was with a refurb which is not at all right.

Regarding the wifi, it's an ad-hoc connection between the phone and cam.....not actually conected to the internet.

...You do not need a Wi-Fi network set up to use Capture / the GoPro App and remote.  The GoPro Wi-Fi creates an ad hoc network that they communicate over.

Re: No settings menu on the front LCD

Hello,

@helix88xcwThe older versions of the Capture app required you to connect to a internet connection to login to the app(pretty confusing wording, I know). With the new update this is a thing of the past.

@coolsand52367 I'm really sorry your experience with the GoPro 5 Black isn't the way you expected it to be. GoPro seems to have really bad quality control these days ( quantity over quality is currently the way to go). My 5 Black works perfectly well. It seems you have to get lucky with a good one.

Honestly, the struggles with the doors and lens cover are to be expected. If you could just pop the cover off or easily open the doors, that could happen, say, underwater when you're recording something really important. Yes, I agree that the buttons to open the doors could be bigger, but again, this stops something from pressing the button and opening the door when you don't want it to.

What do you mean by " composite video output"? There is a Micro-HDMI port on the side under the door.

Quik connects perfectly fine for me. How are you connecting? Is it via SD card, USB cable, or are you trying to connect over Wifi?

On the front screen, you press the Mode button to go down the list of menus, and you press the Shutter button to cycle through selections in a menu. Just out of curiosity, in what situation would you need to turn on and off your Wifi while using a Super Suit?

Re: No settings menu on the front LCD

Last question first, I would use WiFi with the underwater housing to downolad images or videos without opening the housing, for example when I go diving. There's no point in wasting battery having the WiFi enabled underwater.

Composite video is analog signal, previous models of GoPro had this either on a dedicated A/V plug or through the micro USB plug, HDMI is not good for what I do (FPV flgying), it requires big heavy cables, a heavy and expensiveHDMI converter and it would introduce lag in the video which is not good when flying fast and low.

I tried to connect the camera to Quik using the USB cable on my, it doesn't detect the camera, I haven't tried it on my laptops because frankly I don't want to go to the trouble of installing it again and forcing it not to start up when I boot my computer; no GoPro, I don't need, or want, your software to run continuously on the background.

Re: No settings menu on the front LCD

I tried that, as I mentioned I have other GoPro cameras and I can navigate the menus through the front LCD with no problems, on this camera I only get to cycle through the shooting modes.

Re: No settings menu on the front LCD

To use Capture (and Quik) you have to log in through Internet, so if I can't acces Internet (as in the remote locations GoPro shows in their promotional videos) I'm SOL.

I did format the cards, all four of them that I bought when I couldn't get the first camera to work, format in the camera, format on this computer, on that computer, Windows 7, Windows 10, this type of format, that type of format, I spent hours on that and in the end it was a defective camera, it was really frustrating.

Re: No settings menu on the front LCD

Can you not just shoot all of your videos, then download them all at the end?

I see about the composite video. Yeah, with the new design GoPro could only fit two plugs under that door. Does the USB-C cable not work? Out of curiosity, what exactly do you do with this signal?

Hmm, that's odd. My camera shows up every time. I plug the camera in with the USB-C and turn it on. A thing pops up on the side of my screen (I use Windows 10), and I can then open Quik and select to download my footage. I'll see what I can find about this issue. Your computer not recognizing the GoPro is something really buggy.

Again with the Wifi, I really don't understand why you can't turn it on through the menu. The wifi doesn't work underwater, so you would have to surface anyways to connect. I would just open the back d'or and turn on the wifi, then turn it off again when I'm done. It does take a while to download, so there isn't a speed benefit if you don't open the backdoor.
