No GPS Data - GoPro 9

[ New ]

Hello GoPro - am looking for a fix on this, if anyone lese if having this problem, it's quite a significant one.

I have a new fully updated GoPro 9.  I am running GoPro Quik and GoPro Player on my MacBook Pro running Mojave 10.14.6

So - I want to use the GPS guages - I have GPS Data turned to 'On' on the camera.  I cannot see how to enagge the guages in GoPro player, so have to use GoPro Quik - 2.7.0.874. -  when I try to do this, I have this error - the "No GPS Data" error.  This is particulalry frustrating, as I need this function, and this always used to work, on older GoPro cameras ( i have had many - am not new to trying to make this work)  My recrodings were done outside, I was wearing a Garmin device that recorded data with no problem - ie - I was not in a GPS shadow anywhere.

Is this a common issue, is GoPro Quik the only way to access the guages without non-thrid party (paid for) data extraction software, and is this something with a work around.  If its a work flow thing, is anyone else able to make GoPro 9 GPS data work with Quik...?  Is the GoPro 9 even recording my GPS data - is there a way to find out...?

Any thoughts welcome - especially from yourselves, GoPro....???

Many thanks

Tb

Re: No GPS Data - GoPro 9

When GoPro QUIK was created, the latest camera on the market was the GoPro Hero 6.  The GoPro Hero 7 came out and it was also supported by Quik.  The GoPro Hero 8 and GoPro Hero 9 use a different GPS format and therefore they are not compatible with Quik.  Quik has also been discontinued and therefore there will be no updates to make it compatible with the GoPro Hero 8 or GoPro Hero 9.

If you wish to use GPS gauges look for Dashware or Racerender.  There's also another 3rd party solution that you can use that can be found here:

https://goprotelemetryextractor.com/free/

Or you can wait until GoPro releases their new software "Mural" which was originally due out this fall according to their own investor relations package.

Thank's for your answer but there is no gps data into the mp4 file. Here is the issue. I've tried with race render Mac and telemetry extractor free none detect gps data 😒

hi,

there are some issues with the GPS.

in the threads below you will see that GPS information is missing.

is not clear why.

I've made many tests.

when hypersmooth is on/boost, there are less GPS valid data then if off.

but I cannot point to hypersmooth as the trigger.

I hope will be solved,

robert

I got my GPS to work however you have to turn the camera on and wait a few mins for it to get a GPS signal..

THEN when the GPS icon is lit up, it will capture but the data stream is super innacurate as when i run it through race render the speed shows 40mph when I'm sat at traffic lights and the map track jumps up and down in straight lines!

GOPRO Need to fix this ASAP before I do a youtube video of it dammin the GPS!

And as for Mural, I dont think that will work well if they dont sort out the GPS accuracy!

Same issue here. Even waiting for the god icon to go solid it still isn't recording any data.

Here are some general tips for the lucky ones that have a functioning GPS antenna on the Hero9 (uncommon) https://community.gopro.com/t5/GoPro-Metadata-Visualization-GPS/GoPro-GPS-not-working-Performance-st...

The rest of us will keep waiting for an update (or more likely a hardware replacement)

The fix says about Accuracy. Doesn't address the face that the data file isn't present in the video where QUIK picks it up. Mine gets a GPS lock as soon as I turn it on...

It just has to be extracted by a 3rd party expensive App

From what I can see Quik is no longer supported.

https://gopro.com/en/us/news/gopro-app-update-combines-with-quik-into-one

Even with expensive third party products the GPS data did not work as the data has location data all over the place and gets rejected by the apps.

Hopefully the new firmware will fix this for the Hero 9's with the issue (some it seem are okay).

Even when Quik did work it was useless for many as it did not permit merging video files for longer activities.

GoPro Dashware windows app did at least let you do that but alas also has not been updated in years :(

Race render 3 works perfectly with the 9- on quickcapture mode too.

I’m on the current firmware and all gps data is smooth and consistent. This is riding in hilly(not mountains) and tree-covered areas, too.

There could be a GPS signal even when using QuikStart, but it's unlikely. At least it's unlikely to get a GOOD signal.

And I also think it's unlikely that GoPro will change that

Habe leider das gleiche Problem.

GPS Daten wurden gespeichert, können aber nicht genutzt werden.

Besonders ärgerlich, dass es schon lange Drittanbieter gibt, die die GPS-Daten verwerten können.

Simple fact, GoPro are a hardware company 1st and a partial software company 2nd.  They only have software for smart phones at this point and to invest in mac and pc software would result in a heavy investment in software developement in an already crowded market place.

They DO have advertised software for Mac desktops and laptops, it just doesn't work !  #QUIK

See the following youtube;

I checked GPS accuracy before and after the firmware update,

Re: No GPS Data - GoPro 9

Seriously, GoPro are **bleep**e - what sort of cheap arse company would make a GPS enabled video camera clearly aimed at the activity user over £300 that dosen't come with basic software for downloading the video including the GPS functions. The market may have many charged for software options that allow all manner of editing, but I just need a basic viewing and trimming tool that allows me to show up the gauges like you could do with a much older GoPro !!!

My GoPro 9 was a gift from my partner so I can't really tell her that she should have saved £200 and bought a second hand GoPro 6 instead. They've taken one step forward and five steps back and I'm annoyed.

I can't believe all the reviews on Youtube don't mention that once you've paid out for your GoPro, you then need to buy a memory card reader to transfer your data (because the GoPro can't even do this simple thing properly), then you need to buy and learn how to use video editing software (and make sure you get the right software because my first pick turned out to not support the GPS function without much separating and joining, importing and exporting apparently, I still haven't achieved it yet).
