I have found that when i go into nightlapse mode and click to go into the photo setting, the button goes to blue like i have selected it, but the menu does not pop up and i have to reset the gopro to get back to normal functionality. the image on the lcd is still live so it's not totally frozen. Also i seem to be having some issues with it turning off after only a few photos in both timelapse photo modes. I have gotten some grate timelapse videos, but i am trying to maximize my battery life by using the photo lapse options to attempt to get an entire sunset or moon crossing the night sky.

I did the manual firmware update and a few tests. it seems to be working at the moment. I also set the auto off function to never. I don't see why it would turn the camera off during a shooting operation but i will turn it back on and try again tonight to see if it will shut off again. so far so good. next step will be to try some light writing during timelapse shooting. If anyone has any tips on that it would be greatly appreciated.

I contacted them and had a great conversation while they walked me through the manual firmware install. It seems to have fixed the issue. I tried using an external power adapter 3V while shooting 4k 24 fps, and i think the battery just can't charge fast enough for continuous operation over an hr and a half. The ability to have a backup wideshot while i am filming an interview or presentation is so valuable so any tips on extending the life while shooting 4k would be greatly appreciated. However, during timelapse photo it might not drain the battery as fast and be able to sustain continuous operation. I will test it out and see if i can go for a full night with the power adapter, just have to make sure it will be dry. Have you tried any of the external batteries for the hero7? this was one of the few i found Extended-Battery-Rechargeable-Waterproof-Housing

Great to know that the manual firmware update resolved the issue, @boreas1700. Since the battery does not get charged when the camera is in operation (recording or doing a time lapse), make sure that the external power source outputs 5V, 2A to provide enough power for the camera to continue working.

I have just experienced the same issue this morning...switched to NightLapse mode and when touching the menu button it froze blue...just as in the first post on this thread. My firmware is up to date...and has been for a while. Any suggestions? Do i have to reinstall the firmware? Surely that isnt a 'fix' if its been ok up until now. Plus how do i reset the frozen menu without having to remove the battery every time?
I hope this is a one off error as the main reason for buying a gopro was for timelapses....
