Newbie going cage diving

Hey everyone, I have just bought a hero 5 and I'm going cage diving with great white sharks, in south Australia. I'm wondering what would be the best settings to use for this underwater? Am I best with 1080? 60 fps? Should I use the wide setting? Any help would be appreciated, I really want to get the best footage possible...thank you!! Jay

Re: Newbie going cage diving

Do you have a video editor?

4K is going to give you the best resolution and the most to work with in an editor. On the flip side to this, however is because 4K produces a lot of data, your computer and editor might not be powerful enough to edit it.

2.7/60 is probably your best option. Use linear view and you will have nearly 4K and no editor required to remove fish eye as it will be straightened by the camera for you.

I suggest you read everything about GoPro cameras (especially the Hero4 and of course Hero5) written by Abe Kislevits http://abekislevitz.com/category/gopro/

Re: Newbie going cage diving

Hi Daniel, thanks for your reply. I think I will take your advice and use the settings you have suggested. I do have an editor but other 4K stuff I have filmed with a drone has been a little difficult to edit...2.7k seems like a good compromise.

Re: Newbie going cage diving

Related question: What is the rationale for using "Linear" FOV vs. the regular wide angle? Is that recommendation specific to performance gains while cage diving, or underwater diving in general (or just personal preference)?

Re: Newbie going cage diving

Linear is generally preferred to remove the fish eye. If you don't mind a little warp around the edges and the traditional GoPro look, use wide or even Superview. With wide/sv you'll use the entire sensor and won't miss anything at the edges of the screen. Linear crops your total viewing area by about 10% around the edges to remove the warp.
