My hero 8 is not sending a HDMI to my 4K TV

[ New ]
I’m using a cable from a third party, the cable was recommended by your customer support without mentioning a cable from GoPro. Tried everything mentioned on your article, please don’t refer me back to it. Can I get a cable from GoPro.

@spryspirit507, you can connect your GoPro to an HDTV using the GoPro Media Mod. USB-C to HDMI connection in the camera isn't supported. The release date of the modular accessories for HERO8 Black will be available soon. Please continue to watch out https://gopro.com/ for updates.

Re: My hero 8 is not sending a HDMI to my 4K TV

The GoPro Hero 8 doesn't have a HDMI out on it so there's no way for it to display images on any TV without using the media mod (due to be released for preorder later this month).

I'd love to see a copy of this "article" you refer to as it's obviously very bad information.

As I am with @irishmanpdx  on that.  GoPro taken out hte HDMI tv playback and must go through the Media Module.  If gopro said a 3rd party will work what were they referring you to the Hero 7???  you also must remember  you  and the rep, one missunderstood.    I had to ask my question 5 times to finally get, now I understand clearly.   that you are calling about....

I tried using a couple of USB C to HDMI adapters that work with my Galaxy S9/Note 10 + - they didn't work with the Hero 8.

I clearly said it was a Hero 8, how can I preorder the media module since contrary to what GoPro support no third party makes one.

Plug one end of HDMI cable into Media Mod

Plug other end of HDMI cable into TV

If you need more instructions than that you probably shouldn't be operating any electrical device.

Because I been waiting for two months for the media mod, I was trying to connect the camera directly to TV with a USB C to HDMI cable as wrongly directed by a GoPro support self appointed genius like you. I am 100 times more qualified to operate an electronic device than you, don’t e such An A hole.

Never start a sentance with "Because", "And" or "Anyway".

Score for correct use of grammer F-

So you're saying you spoke to someone who DIDNT work for GoPro and believed them?

" I was trying to connect the camera directly to TV with a USB C to HDMI cable as wrongly directed by a GoPro support self appointed genius like you."

Or do you not know the difference between a GoPro employee and some random stranger off the internet?  (I'll give you a clue, GoPro Employee's are paid by GoPro, represent the company and are forced to be polite to people...   I on the other hand...).

Score for deductive reasoning F-

Online reviews of the GoPro Hero 8 also mention a lack of HDMI support and the need to purchase the media module to get GoPro footage to your TV using HDMI

Score for research F-

You've been told many times in this thread that you need the media module and that USB-C to HDMI is not supported by the camera, yet you ignore this and keep referring to your conversation with a "GoPro support self appointed genius like you."

Score for ignoring reality and flogging a dead horse A+

Now, rumor has it that the media module actually starts to ship on the 27th of January.  That's less than a week away!!  So hopefully you pre-ordered a media module upon release and aren't on a waiting list for stock to arrive.  Hopefully then you can get your GoPro footage from your camera to a TV.

@vitalriviver6681 you better check the specs of the media mod before buying. There's nothing to say that it has 4K video output over HDMI. Not sure what resolution the Hero 7 outputted and what framerate.

Just because a camera records at 4k it doesn't mean that it automatically has 4k HDMI output.

I'm guessing that theres going to be a big difference between what Gopro expect the HDMI output to be used for (checking your shots at the end of the day when on a trip and edit them when you are back home) and what some users want from the HDMI port (connect the Gopro to the T and use it as a a player to show everyone the 4k video you've taken. Or using the small format of the Hero 8 to get the camera into a tight space but bringing the HDMI out into an external recorder - possible recording at a higher bitrate or into a different codec)

Media Mod output details:

Connecting to a Big Screen with an HDMI Cable
Media Mod has a micro-HDMI port that lets you connect your HERO8 Black to an HDTV. You’ll be able to see your photos and videos on the big screen or to use it to preview your shot. Plug a micro-HDMI cable (sold separately) into your Media Mod, and then choose an HDMI setting in your camera’s Preferences menu.

  1. From your camera’s main screen, swipe down to access the Dashboard.
  2. Tap Preferences > Input/Output > HDMI Output.
  3. Scroll through the options on the right and choose the one you want.

OptionDescription
Media (default)Play back your media on an HDTV.
MonitorDisplay your camera’s live view with camera info on an HDTV.
LiveDisplay your camera’s live view without camera info on an HDTV.

Heads Up: 4K preview and playback on a 4K TV will be displayed in full resolution at a maximum of 30 frames per second. The maximum resolution while recording is 1440p for 4:3 content and 1080p for footage shot in 16:9.

Media Playback on Your HDTV
There are two ways to navigate the media playback menu on your TV.

Button Control

  1. Press the Mode button User-added image on your camera to cycle through your options.
  2. Press the Shutter button User-added image on your camera to make a selection.

Touch Screen Control
Swipe and tap your camera’s screen to navigate and select items.

That's funny because I'm an electrical engineer at SpaceX. I'm purely going off of pictures I have seen of the media mod and do not see an HDMI port but if there is one good and fine. Oh and thanks for the patronization

@vitalreviver6681 it's not a full sized HDMI but a mini port just above the usd c port. Easy to miss, it's not rocket science

Sorry dude that comment was meant for irishmanpdx. And you're right there is a micro HDMI right above the USBC and I fully thought that there was going to be a full size HDMI. Transferring my media files and editing on the Zenbook Duo Pro from Asus works extremely well with Premiere Pro. I just think watching it on your TV and then going back and editing it is a good idea because it's such a big display. And once again you're right it's definitely not rocket science.

Re: My hero 8 is not sending a HDMI to my 4K TV

[ New ]

Hey guys,

I just received my media mod and I instantly tried to connect it to an external monitor, but I just doesn't work. At one point a little bit of the user interface appeared on the screen, but only for a few seconds. I tried several hdmi cables and also two different camera monitors. Its not working at all.

I updated my Hero 8 to the latest software and I'm using a original GoPro battery.

The onyl thing that happens is, that the display on the back of the gorpo keeps going on and off every few seconds, sporadically.

What can I do? Any Ideas?

Cheers

Re: My hero 8 is not sending a HDMI to my 4K TV

People have experienced issues in the past with monitors or TV's that only support 1080i, whereas the media mod outputs 1080P.  Is it possible this could be the issue?

You may also want to check the HDMI cable and make sure it's a HDMI 1.4, it's possible that if you are using HDMI 1.3 cables, these are not going to support the 4K output of the media mod.

Re: My hero 8 is not sending a HDMI to my 4K TV

[ New ]

First of all, thanks for your quick reply!

I'm using the Lilliput A7s and the TARION X5, both are 4k compatible and are also made for progressive scan. That should not be an issue.

I've tried it with a 10,2 Gbit/s HDMI 2.0 cable and also with an older one which works fine with my Sony A7iii.

So I guess that should also be fine. I will try another cable, because I have plenty, but I don't think it will help.

Cheers

Well eliminate the possible first.  Try hooking up the media mod to your TV to see if at least you can get a signal output.  That may narrow it down to a faulty media mod or a monitor compatibility issue.

Re: My hero 8 is not sending a HDMI to my 4K TV

Here is a video what happens if I connect it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZmdAJ1N1SyoQ4H8-HKKSkewlGfSctCHS/view?usp=sharing

The monitor keeps saying "no signal" permanently.

By the way: if I go to the "Preferences > Input/Output" section of the menu, there is only audio/microphone but nothing about HDMI.

Im going to connect it to a regular pc monitor, since I don't have a TV around. But that monitor is also state of the art (not even one year old).

Edit: the regular pc monitor doesn't work as well. Exactly the same. I guess I have to return that media mod and hope that a replacement is going to fix the issue.

Re: My hero 8 is not sending a HDMI to my 4K TV

Yeah, I mean two monitors and a PC monitor not working, looks like it could be a faulty mod.  The display turning on and off like that on your camera reminds me of hooking up an old monitor to a graphics card and experiencing a timing issue.  **bleep** thing would just flash on and off at random.

I'm guessing there will be a delay on replacement media mods with shipments being curtailed, production down and an embargo on 40ft containers though.  Looks like an awesome setup though!  Sorry you couldn't get it working.

Thank you for your help. The most weird thing is, that for a very short while it was working...

At least I know now that I have tried pretty much everything and that I need to request a replacement. Actually I did order it already and currently the replacement should arrive end of this month. Thats not to long. Especially since I should stay at home (or in my studio) for social distancing anyway. ;)

I waited three months for the module, when finally Got it I connected the camera to my TV and by accident found out that I could only select my videos by using a completely blank touch screen on my camera, then I went back to check the directions sent with the Mod. I called the support group and they told me that what I was doing was the only and correct way. No insults like in the past if you have any suggestions

What do you mean by "completely blank touch screen"? Do you mean very clean, free of any finger prints and stuff?

I don't event get close to beeing abel to select videos and actually I don't even want that. What I'm trying is to get a live preview or basicall a front monitor, that allows me to use the GoPro for vlogging properly.

Also I don't understand what you are reffering to with "no insults like in the past"... Please elaborate.

Re: My hero 8 is not sending a HDMI to my 4K TV

[ New ]

Fine... I'll play nice.

Unfortunately that seems to be the design of the Media Mod.  I'm pretty sure (it's been a while) when you connected the bacpac display to the GP2 and GP4, it showed you a grid of your media (3 x 3) and you could select clips you wanted and do basic fast forward and rewind via the touchscreen.

However on the GP8, then the media mod is attached, it's only capable of displaying on one display at a time, so the back screen goes completely blank and you have to make random swipes to get to the media you want.  I for one find this extremely irritating and as a result, I really don't use the media mod for outputting media to my TV.  I tend to just slap the SD card directly into my laptop and cast the footage to the TV.  At least that way I have full control over what I want to see, fast forwarding, rewinding etc.

So to sum up....  The media mod is crap for outputting to a TV.  The microphones aren't that good either (and in "stereo" mode the output on the left is higher and there's a high pitched whine noticable on the right), it's not really that great a mod because it's got cold shoe mounts instead of hot shoe mounts (so no camera or app control over what you attach) and the only thing I use it for is external microphone support.
