Moving magenta color cast on Go Pro Hero 5 Black

I am new to Go Pro and just experimenting with my new Go Pro Hero 5 Black camera.

Since it is winter I started to do a lot of experimental footage with snow.

I have noticed that my camera records very visible magenta cast. This is especially troublesome when there is a lot of snow and the weather is overcast. In such situation magenta color cast splotches/shadows move and dance across the snow.

I tried various setting of Go Pro Protune to no avail. This is also visible when I get rid of any in-camera color processing by setting Protune Color to Flat and WB to Native. Post processing does not help since reducing magenta cast causes snow to get sickly green.

As a matter of fact, one needs to be very careful with saturation since color cast is existent on both sides of spectrum - green and magenta. Boosting saturation maginfies both casts and snow is no longer neutral white/grey but sickly splotchy greenich, greysih, magenta constantly changing like in a caleidoscope.

I contacted Go Pro support but they claim that footage looks normal.

I can see the cast on my color-calibrated monitor, on other PCs, my laptop and on my Panasonic plasma TV when I stream my snow footage from Vimeo. The cast is not present when I play films recorded on other camras I have or when I play films recorded on other Go Pros (available on You Tube).

I suspect deficiency in sensor but would like to get your opinion to confirm that I am not missing something here.

Please see attached 6 pictures of three frames from one of my experiments. Camera was set on 1440, 60fps, Protune color Flat, WB Native. To make things more visible three frames are with no color post-processing and the same three have slightly boosted saturation so splotches are much more visible. Please note how splotches are moving from frame to frame.

Also, please see two short links from Vimeo with my unprocessed and processed footage.

Any help or words of wisdom will be much appreciated.

Re: Moving magenta color cast on Go Pro Hero 5 Black

Thank you mattb,

This sounds plausible. I expected this to be Go Pro .mp4 codec issue. Since I wrote the original post and contacted GoPro support (who by the way were not able to give me any answer yet outside of asking for new samples) I made multiple experiments. I replaced my Go Pro camera with a different one and tried similar videotaping in similar conditions. I got similar results which siginficantly lowers the possibility that my first camera was deficient. I also searched for youtube footage from Go Pro cameras which would have a lot of snow with overcast weather. Not surprisingly, I found similar splotches of magenta in films of other Go Pro users. I also experimented with videotaping same footage with my Go Pro, Samsung smartphone and Panasonic HC-V770 camcorder. Magenta splotches appeared in all of them with Panasonic camcorder showing the best performance with least pronounced color casts. This strongly points towards differences in codecs rather than any other issues.

I am looking forward to Go Pro firmware update which woul deliminate (or at least improve) this issue.

Thanks again.

@toughpike5712 - I see a little of what you're talking about. It looks like the camera is adapting to the amount of light it's getting. It might be worth getting in touch with our Support team at https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus to see if we can troubleshoot this with you.

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: Moving magenta color cast on Go Pro Hero 5 Black

Thank you for your prompt reply Jeff.

Before posting on this forum I spent couple of weeks exchanging messages, videos and pictures with Go Pro support team.

Unfortunately they did not see any problem with my footage. Susan S. - the Go Pro support person I was corresponding with - claims that she consulted my issues with many of her colleagues in support team and that nobody can see any "irregularities".

Perhaps they use black and white monitors in their troubleshooting :-). Needless to say, my experience with Go Pro support was very disappointing - hence my post to this group.

You mentioned that you suspect that camera may be adopting to the amount of light it is getting. Can you elaborate a bit more what you mean by that and why this coul dbe responsible for moving color casts?

Re: Moving magenta color cast on Go Pro Hero 5 Black

Hi @toughpike5712

Thank you for posting. It appears that this magenta hue is related to the white balance processing in the camera, and it’s probably exacerbated by the stark white of the snow in your particular video.

It sounds like our firmware team is making some fixes in terms of white balance for the next firmware release that should help in cases like this. Thank you for your patience and please keep an eye out for that update!

Re: Moving magenta color cast on Go Pro Hero 5 Black

I have a similar issue. I also use the Protune mode. I first noticed that on my mountain bike videos I had green "shadows" popping up moving and disappearing again and again. Especially visible on light brown/yellow trails.

Last weekend I was in a bike park where they had a mainly gray track (some sort of gravel). I was not abble to get the white balance right. The track was not gray, it was either green or magenta. Often magenta parts next to green parts. So I was not able to add enough saturation or vibrance as with more color the result gets worse.

I have attached two consecutive frames. ProTune without modification. You can clearly see that suddenly a green bar appeared from one frame to the other.

Could it be that the color resolution between green and magenta is not fine enough? Where the color should be just slightly (unnoticable) green or magenta it's either to much at the green or too much at the magenta side. And as the color is very flat that gets worse after color grading.

And the next frame with the green bar over the whole image.

I have two GoPro Hero5 Black - seems like both have this problem. I never noticed it with the GoPro Hero3 Black and Protune.
