From what I can piece together, GoPro eliminated the mic jack on the Hero and now it requires a $50 adapter. Fine.
But they made the adapter massive and don't provide a way to mount it. Annoying, but whatever.
Then they made it so that only licensed GoPro accessories work even though there are already tons of great usb-c mic adapters on the market. That's purely a money grabbing play. Don't let them pretend it's to protect the consumer from cheap imitations. But still, fine.
Then they massively cut back on the developer program so nobody can create a licensed accessory. But still, that's ok.
I'll just buy the official $50 accessory. Nope. It's been out of stock for literally a year and all GoPro support say is to check back on the website every day.
But I can still deal with that. I bought one on eBay for $150 because everyone knows they're so rare. Even then, it only records audio for the first video, which is a very common problem that people experience with this adapter.
GoPro, this is totally unacceptable. Your string of poor decisions have left your users in a situation where reality doesn't reflect your advertising.
Either fix the adapter and keep it in stock, license a third party, or, best yet, change the firmware to remove the arbitrary restriction that refuses to talk to otherwise working third party adapters.

The adapter actually has been available on the GoPro website several times in the last few months. Problem is, I don't think GoPro is making a limit on how many can be purchased. It seems that everytime they are available, they get bought out in a few hours. Very frustrating I'm sure to those that don't have one but need it.
I have no idea, but my guess is that GoPro is coming out with either a new adapter or will be eliminating it altogether for their new cameras coming out in the next few months. This would make sense since they actively try to keep inventory low.

GoPro could not even figure out on their own how to hav the ext adapter connect to the gopro casing. Some one came out and selling a $4.00 case. that accepts the adapter and camera.
And guess @activejump332 did you know that I bet you did, The adapter since Oct 2015 with the issue at hand has never been addressed, Hero 6 came out , and Hero 7 came out People are first complaining about the issue. i been in talk with GoPro since 2015 and up and when they simply say rephrain from using the QuickCapture that was the Fx
Today the issue still continues along with audi being out of synch these two issues will never get fixed.

Still no fix for the single recording issue.
I've never had this issue. I record with a Rode VideoMicro, Zoom H1N, and Sennheiser Lavalier. I've been using the external mic adapter since the HERO5 Black on my HERO5, HERO6, HERO7 and Fusion and never had an issue. Are you turning the camera on with the side Mode button prior to recording? Are you selecting the correct mic as @fishycomics suggest? What mic are you using? The adapter has been in stock for years now, but recently has been in short supply. Of course GoPro wants to sell their adapter (they are in business to make money after all), however, I suspect there is either a new adapter (or no adapter needed) for the coming cameras (Sept/Oct), or there is just manufacturing issues with the company that produces these for GoPro. They are also in the process of moving manufacturing for USA distribution to Mexico from China, so this might also explain the shortage.
