Max voltage to Gopro Hero 4 Black

So i just purchased a used Hero 4 Black yesterday. I thought i charge the camera through my USB wall charger (directly to the cameras USB port).
When i pushed in the USB cable in the cameras USB connector i thought i heard a sound, something similar to a capacitor blowing or something like that, but im not totally sure the sound came from the camera, but it sure sounded like that.
I immidietly took out the cable. I could not smell burnt from inside the USB connector and the camera seems to work normally as far as i can see, but i have only tested it for a couple of minutes after it happened.
Ive read after the incident Gopro's recommendations to use 5V and 1Amp charger. But as far as i have understood the camera only draws the amount of Amps it needs, so it should be okay with 2.4 Amp chargers as well.

I measured the voltage and amp output from the particular charger and with no load it gave out 5.12 Volts.
Its rated as a 2.4 Amp charger, but under a 1 Amp test load it gave out 4.86 Volts and 0.88 Amps.

So the thing im thinking about is if the camera got lets say 5.12 volts even though the camera is rated for 5V, is this a problem for the camera?

Shouldnt there be a tolerance of +/-5 percent on USB devices so that a voltage of at least 5.25 volt should be fine?

Im just thinking about the very typical sound ive heard, and maybe it caused some problems that i will not notice until later on ?
I would be grateful for some input.

Re: Max voltage to Gopro Hero 4 Black

Hi @beach44537,

We definitely recommend 5v 1amp for charging the HERO4. Anything over this can effect that camera. If you are having some troubles with that camera our Support Team may be able to help out. https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus

Best,

Ryan
