Lost GoPro due to faulty mount

I was surfing today when a wave hit my board and carried away the mount, along with my GoPro Hero 4. Therefore, because of a faulty GoPro accessory (may I add that this is one of the mounts that came originally with the camera), my GoPro was lost in the ocean. Will I be eligible for a new GoPro considering the fact that the only reason it was lost was a dysfunctional accessory? Thank you.

Re: Lost GoPro due to faulty mount

@graycliff6420

That's a tremendous bummer! What kind of surfboard are you riding (fiber glass, epoxy, foam)? Were you using the white surf mount with the tether or one of the black standard mounts?

I've had a couple mounts break in 20' heavy winter storm waves but lucky for me the tether has always held. I also use a floaty. I did once have a mount come off my foam top but my floaty saved the camera for me and I was able to retrieve the camera. I since learned that you have to use the body board mount on foam surfboards since they aren't completely flat.

The surfboard mounts are adhered with 3M VHB 4991 tape. According to 3M, "

This trusted and reliable tape offers a consistent bond, outstanding durability and excellent solvent and moisture resistance. 3M stands by all of its products and is there to provide you with design guidance and technical support when you need it."

It would seem your issue is with 3M and not GoPro, as it is 3M's tape that failed you.

For anyone else reading this and considering mounting their GoPro to a surfboard I suggest the following:

1. Only use the surfboard mount on a fiberglass or epoxy board (fiberglass is best)

2. Only use the surfboard mount. It's designed for surfing, the standard mounts do not have enough surface area.

3. Always use the tether system

4. Use a floaty on the back door for added protection

5. Before mounting, clean the area well with alcohol and let it dry

6. Apply firm pressure for 5-10 minutes minimum (if you can clamp or apply weight it is best)

7. Allow 24-48 hours before mounting your camera and/or taking your board surfing

8. When considering where to mount, place the mount to the side of the stringer if the board is slightly concave. You want it on a flat surface.

9. Mount the camera as far to the nose as possible while still keeping the camera comfortably close enough so you can operate it while sitting on your board.

10. Always ensure that the door and white gasket are completely shut and making a seal before locking the latch

If you follow the above advice, your camera should be safe.

@graycliff6420

I'm really sorry for your lost camera and I'm sure you are really angry that you lost it. Unfortunately, I don't think GoPro will replace the camera. However, you should contact their customer service directly https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus and they might be able to work something out or possibly give you a discount on a new camera.

Re: Lost GoPro due to faulty mount

[ Edited ]

Sorry to hear about that @graycliff6420.

Hopefully you put a PDF with your information if found.

Since this was a faulty product GoPro can replace the mount,

but they can't replace the camera it's self, the manual states

if the camera is lost or stolen GoPro is not responsible for

your cation of this. Next you might of wanted a safety string.

Also GoPro sells refurbish cameras for half the price if your looking to

save some money and get another camera: http://shop.gopro.com/refurbished

Hope that helps.

Chris.
