I know that "Live" will give me a clean ouput on a TV via HDMI, while "Monitor" will give me the live view with all the camera status, and "Media" will give me the saved list view on my TV using the gopro Hero5 unit to control movement and selection. It may not be exactly as I have described, but it should be close.
What I want to do is to output the Hero 5 to the TV to see live and recording views. But what I also want to do is to be able to play the recorded videos on the TV. And all this has to be done remotely (not holding the Hero5) as the unit is inaccessible to me (far or behind a closed cover/window).
So I know I have to have something on my hand as a remote to do what I need to. The GoPro app can control the recording of the Hero5 and the video of what it is recording shows up on the TV. But when I go into the saved Media, the playback only happens on the app/smartphone.
Is there something I can use so that I can control the Hero5 to start/stop recording and also play saved videos (saved on the Hero5) on the TV? Can the GoPro Smart Remote or some 3rd party remote do these?

An HDTV with HDMI would be more accurate. The app is limited to controlling the record/stop function of the Hero5 while it is in Live View or Monitor mode. The app can access saved videos, but can only playback on the app/smartphone.
Not too sure what the remotes can do. But what I need is to have the TV show a live feed (monitor or live view mode), and be able to control the Hero5 to open saved videos and have it played on the connected TV.
Almost tempted to get the smart remote, but would not want to invest on something expensive and end up not doing what I hoped it would. So if anyone can confirm that the smart remote or any other remote/device can do that, then that solves my problem.

You can use the Smart remote control to be able to control the camera remotely while the camera is connected to the TV. You can set the camera in Media for HDMI output, and the Smart remote control will allow you to navigate trough the functions - from accessing recorded content and doing recordings (or capturing an image). Hope this helps.

The TV is always on "Live View" or "Monitor" mode and since it is on the other side of a cover (inside of machine), would the smart remote be able to change the mode of the Hero5 from "live view" to "media"?
If the smart remote can do that, then I think I can live with that. As long as I can do all the controls away from the unit and have all video output showing on the TV, then switching modes is not a show-stopper.
Can someone confirm that please?

Glad to hear back from you, @aldrexx. The camera has to be set to Media before being connected to the TV. Although set to Media, you will still be able to navigate between the recorded media and "live" or recording screen trough the remote control. The remote control will not be able to change HDMI output from one to another. I just tried a setup and it showed that even if the camera is inside a metallic drawer, it was still able to communicate with the remote control.

Thank you so much for taking time to try it out.
The cover is acrylic so I don't think there will be any issue with the remote signal reception. I currently am able to control the Hero5 with the app on my smartphone.
I am a bit confused with your reply as you said I can navigate between recorded media and "live" or recording screen, but then you also said the remote cannot change the HDMI output from one to another.
The idea of my install is to use the Hero5 to feed what is happening inside the machine to the TV, like most of the time. But I may want to record a few minutes of a machine process that interests me, then set the Hero back to feeding live video to the TV. Then later again be able to come back and bring up the saved video and play it back to the TV, then set the Hero5 back again to live feed to the TV. Basically the Hero5 feeds live video 98% of the time, so that is the default.
All that, hopefully, to be done without personally accessing/holding the Hero5, and all video shown in the TV whether it is playback or live.

Apologies for the confusion. The HDMI output refers to the options in Preferences where you can set the camera to either Live, Monitor or Media. Here, you will use the Media option. The camera should already be set to Media before you connect it to the TV. While in this output mode, and connected to the TV, you can use the remote control to toggle between recorded media (that is playing back videos, photos on the TV screen) and live feed (with TV screen showing what the camera sees in either idle mode or recording mode). I hope this clarifies the case.
