I tried to run my H5 with no internal battery while using the external mic module and the recordings turned out really bad, static, pops etc.
Like it was trying to use the external mic but kept using internal at same time.
It worked fine with the battery installed and also using external power, but I took the battery out because it does not seem to be able to keep up charging the battery while continously recording.
I had the H5 behind me on my kayak and the H7 in front both with no internal battery, H7 worked fine but that also has issues with the hypersmooth and external mic and power unless hypersmooth is disabled or one of the resolutions that only support standard.

Yeah I had noticed that years agon the external mic adapter in the car no less with the Hero 5 session as well so I chaulked it up to the Adpter .

There is always something wrong with all the GoPro cams LOL.
I got the 5 to get around the hypersmooth out of sync bug on the H7......
I guess I will just have to leave the battery in and hope it does not overheat or shutdown when the battery goes dead after 4 or 5 hours.

well, I think I figured this one out, if you power it up via the USB power source(no internal battery and mic NOT plugged into adapter) then plug in the 3.5mm jack for the mic the quality goes back to normal.
I will test a couple more times to make sure but that seems to resolve it.
