Is there any benefit of having Super suit when diving up to 6-8 meters

Hello,

I am going to do some diving during vacations. I am not hardcore diver and 6-8 meters is max what I can achieve.

Should I buy Super suit for such scenario? Or as the description says - everything up to 10 meters should be fine?

Will I be able to push buttons (power on/start recording) while 6-8 meters under the surface?

Re: Is there any benefit of having Super suit when diving up to 6-8 meters

Waterproofing and usability depths are not the same thing. While the camera is waterproof to 10 meters, water pressure can effect the buttons negatively when the camera is not in a housing. For shallow water up to 3-4 meters, the camera will not be effected and usability is maintained. Beyond this depth, you can start to have usability issues.

Some people have reported odd behavior from their HERO5/6/7 cameras when used without the Super Suit at depths beyond 3-4 meters. Most common is the camera going into time laps mode, which is part of the Quick Capture feature where a long shutter press triggers the time lapse mode. You can avoid this by turning Quick Capture off, but if the button is being depressed by the water pressure, you might not be able to start a recording.

Having the Super Suit, you will not have issues with water pressure. Additionally, you will have added protection from accidental bumps and drops. You should also get the Floaty to attach to the back door in case you drop the camera while in the water. Another benefit of using the Super Suit is you don't have to clean the camera after use in salt water (you do have to clean the housing) and the camera is ready to go when you get out of the water for more recording.

A few notes about using the Super Suit:
1) Do not trust 3rd party cheap housings. I speak from experience on this and have had more than one fail on me throughout the years. The front glass is generally not of the same quality and more prone to pitting, the seal around the lens is more likely to fail, and the latch that keeps the door is not as sturdy or safe. I recently almost lost my HERO6 with a 3rd part housing that had it's latch fail after the camera, mounted on my surfboard, was hit by a large wave .
2) You do need to take the front protective lens off of the camera before inserting into the Super Suit housing. This is not a bad thing as it reduces a layer of glass between the subject and lens. Other 3rd party housings are designed to allow the camera to fit with the protective lens still attached. While convenient, it adds a layer of glass for the sensor to see through.
3) Always clean your housing after use, especially if used in salt water. Soak the housing in fresh clean water for about 15-20 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Once done, take the door off and clean the metal bar at the bottom. Occasionally take the rubber gasket off and clean it with fresh water. Only hang dry the gasket, do not use a cloth or hot air to dry. The gasket has two sides, one rounded and the other flat. The flat side goes toward the door and the round side faces the housing.
4) When closing the door, start by placing pressure on the bottom of each side equally and work your way up the door to the latch. Make sure the entire gasket is inside the housing before engaging the latch
5) As long as the media and battery door are on and closed properly, the camera is waterproof, even without the protective lens. Make sure both are closed, flush with the camera, and the lock button has popped back up.
6) Using GoPro Anti-Fog inserts will reduce fogging of the lens. Holding the interior of the housing up to an A/C unit vent (not swamp/humidity cooler) will help ensure there is no moisture inside the housing.
7) After applying the GoPro Floaty to the back door, do not use the housing with Floaty for 24-48 hours after application. If possible, apply pressure during this time to help the adhesive set (under a book or mattress works well).
8) When purchasing the Floaty, consider getting the Bite Mount + Floaty. The Bite Mount works great as both a mount and a stand. You can also use it with the Handler, which will also give you extra protection if you drop the camera in the water.
9) The Super Suit will increase the amount of heat trapped and eliminate ait flow around the camera. If you are using high resolution/frame rates, try to keep recordings short. If you are in cool water this will not be an issue, but may increase the chance of fogging of the lens. Use anti-fog inserts.
10) You will be able to access the camera mode settings by pressing the side Mode button and top Shutter. If you are not familiar with the old GoPro style menus, you should practice navigating the menu using the front LCD to become accustom to it.

Re: Is there any benefit of having Super suit when diving up to 6-8 meters

Hi @crbgopro,

Yes it will add extra protection to your camera.

And yes you can still push buttons.

I know it will add extra protection Smiley Happy, but based on your experience - is that really essential for such depths?

What about pressing buttons on GoPro without case at depths of 6-8 meters?

the Mode on will allow you to switch between modes, and hte shutter  record , press both   in the mode you are in to getto advance settings, but press mode first then shutter,  if  presses together you'll lock thescreen that you may WANT to do so pressure or water will not incorrectrly change things.

Thank you @danielr15 - your post is very informative!

You made me realize I should not buy the cheap housings.

Ad. 5: "As long as the media and battery door are on and closed properly, the camera is waterproof, even without the protective lens. Make sure both are closed, flush with the camera, and the lock button has popped back up."

I didn't even know that I can remove the front side of the lens. Do I risk anything by removing it eg. trapping water there which will result in fogging even without the Super Suit, after reattaching the protective lens? //Because as I understand the camera is waterproof even without it

You wont damage the camera or protective lens by removing it (properly), but yes, there is a slight risk of trapping moisture behind the protective lens when you reattach it. You should make sure the camera (and lens) are dry and also that you are not in an area of high humidity when you replace the lens.

In most cases, it's not an issue, but you are correct with your inquiry.

There are videos on YouTube that show the process of removing/replacing the front protect lens. Basically, it's just:
1) Pull the lens out and away from the camera
2) While pulling out and away, turn the lens counter clockwise a quarter turn

To put it back on, just repeat the steps in reverse.
