I have a hero 7 and the photos I take are not the same wide screen 16:9 ratio like the video that I take. When I show them on my laptop or wide screen TV they look like they are 4:3 format. Is this normal? I should be able to take the same ratio photos that I take with video. What is going on?

That is not a very good idea for GoPro to do that. That means if you want to use a picture within the video you recorded in 16:9 the picture will be 4:3. Why would they have a picture taken in 4:3 when the pictures will be shown on a wide screen 16:9 tv? Is there a software fix to make all an option of taking pictures in 16:9 just like a video so they are compatible. I bought this camera so I could take pictures and video with the same high quality and ratio to be edited and combined during the editing process. Any suggstions?

Just so you understand,, all 16:9 photos and video are 4:3 that have automatically had the top and bottom cut off. Many people mistakenly think that a 4:3 has black "bars" on the left and right of the image. The fact is, the image has been shrunk to fit the screen, which creates the bars. If you just zoom/resize your image so the left and right sides meet the edges, you will have the exact same image as you would get if the camera automatically cropped it to a 16:9. With 4:3 however, you can now recenter the image up or down to ensure you display the image you want.
Shooting in 4:3 (photo or video) is actually a much better way to record, but because of the confusion and extra step needed, most cameras perform this crop automatically. The problem with this, you can't recover it once it's gone. By shooting in 4:3 you have much more flexibility and far less likely chance to accidentally crop off the top or bottom of the image that you need.

If you go to the App or camera and grab a photo on a 4K video that will be the solution, Hero 5 you had a vid + photo that grabbed off the frame.. AR4:3 is what we are with to use unless you want to use Post and how you stretch. The use of the trademark fisheye will not do the photo justive, if asked. and cropping a shot may be better
4. vid photo grab (editor)
Choice is yours at least its some samples to decide what you like
