I bought a hero session and it keeps saying "sd error".

Sorry to hear about that @andyb66.

When inserting the SD card, does it match 

the SD card GoPro recommended, and if

so try reformatting the SD card and see if that works.

It's a brand new card and a recommended brand and I've tried reformatting it.

@andyb66 - Each brand produces SD cards that write at different speeds. The GoPro cameras produce a lot of data, so the cards need to be able to write the data very quickly. Here's a list of some of the cards we recommend... https://gopro.com/help/articles/Block/microSD-Card-Considerations

 

Assuming your card is on the list, there are a couple of things you can do to try to correct the SD ERR issue. First is to make sure your camera is running the latest firmware. Next is to reformat the card in the camera. If that does not work, you can try to reformat the card using your computer (Windows | Mac).

The card is on the recommended list and I have reformatted it in the camera and in a Mac.

Is your card a SanDisk?  If so, can you get your hands on a different card on the list?

Also, is your camera on the latest firmware update?
