Hi @sunnydusk2040,

May I know what SD card brand and model are you using and the exact settings you're using?

You can try to install firmware manually by following the manual update steps: https://gopro.com/help/articles/how_to/software-update-instructions-for-hero7-cameras

I update 1.70 throught Quik, because GoPro App on Android can't update my camera and always show error before downloading.

It really very annoying, but i am not complaining about it.

Hello @sunnydusk2040. If available, try using one of the cards here https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/microSD-Card-Considerations . The SD card you identified is not among the recommended ones. Let us know how it works out. Thanks!

There's no one here trying to mislead anyone. When it was reported to turn off Auto Low Light, I did so and it solved my freezing issues.

Here's a test - set your camera to 1080p and 120fps, report back if you're still getting freezes. If you are, you may actually have an incompatible memory card??

Again, for me (I'm using a SanDisk Ultra 256G 100Mbit card), my freezing stopped after keeping Low Light turned off.

Guys, the issue is primarily with the software, it's just not upto GoPro standards and they are giving us sub-par products these days.

Still waiting for that software update that resolves freezing and black screen when connected to phone via WiFI.

Absolutely agreee!  Turning off the low light is a hack at best and frankly I shoot a lot indoors, so any help I can get w/low light is desired!

...And wow, didn't know about (or experience yet) freezing when connected to fone w/wifi - or maybe I did (the connections are hella iffy to begin with) and didn't realize it.

You guys really need to get your !@$% together.. I have multiple cameras, drones, etc and I never had any other device randomly stop recording, freeze etc.. Never. Ever. Yet.. somehow every GoPro I ever owned does the same exact thing and the only response you ever get is the canned "reset, upgrade, use approved SDs", nobody ever seems to acknoledge the issue, let alone do anything about it...

I know you're not the one to blame but you must have a way of letting the people up the foodchain know that this is something that affects a decent portion of your customers.

@willbelljr
Auto low light just reduces the camera frame rate to 30fps. If you are shooting a lot in low light, you should be using 24fps or 30fps (24fps is better) which disables auto low light anyway.

Yep, as long as folk keep buying ‘em and forums like this are the only place where this issue is discussed and “no one that matters” writes or posts a poor YouTube review then nothing will be done.
There is one post above where the poster complains about this freezing issue but ends the post with “I’m not complaining though”, as if he or she is to blame for having a camera that doesn’t work, that attitude is what GoPro love, and that is why folk with this problem will continue to be treated with contempt, without doubt the worst customer service I have ever experienced.

4.5/5 and very positive reviews. If people are happy, they are happy. Amazing device. Especially considering the small, waterproof, and rugged design coupled with incredible image stabilization at 4K/60fps. I have had occasional freezing, but only with one of my SD cards. Once I stopped using that card I haven't had the issue return.

Hi @djfrecuenciainfinita,

It might be due to connection.

Make sure that you have stable connection and you're using a recommended SD card.

https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/microSD-Card-Considerations

Please also try to stream without SD card.

But if issue persist please reset the camera to factory settings and install the latest firmware update available.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

Same problem here, although I will not say constant. It is random. Last week I purchased 2 Hero7 Blacks new from BestBuy and they both have the same issues. Intermittent freeze with a solid red light and a blank screen. I also get the "WiFi NOT READY" warning and have to reset both cameras to get the wifi adapter to work. I use them connected to a charger for long shoots. 8 hours plus. I use the approved SanDisk Extreme 128gb cards in both with only GoPro branded batteries and cables. My firmware was succesfully updated to 1.7 but still same problems on both cameras. My latest test is going to be to turn off the cameras display to see if they may have been getting too hot from the displays being on 100%. The environment I have been shooting in is 70 degrees fahrenheit. I can't imagine somebody designing a camera that overheats itself.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

[ New ]

My brand new GoPro Hero 7 Black is freezing as well.... All I can say is that people have been reporting this problem for four months. GoPro's answer has been to manually install new firmware on the camera, format the SD Card in the camera, check to make sure the SD Card meets the specifications, yadda yadda yadda... Well... I have done ALL OF THAT! This camera is BRAND NEW... And I honestly do not think much of it and certainly think less of GoPro as a company selling a $400 device that doesn't work as advertised and IGNORES the complaints from it's customers.

I have spent a LOT of time troubleshooting this issue and it all comes down to the video stabilization setting. If you turn video stabilization off the camera works fine in every resolution. If you set the aspect ratio to 4:3, Resolution to 960 and frame rate to 120 Video Stabilization will work and the camera doesn't freeze...

GOPRO, FIX THIS **bleep** PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't give your CUSTOMERS who spend good money on your products LAME EXCUSES and "fixes" that don't solve the problem.

OK I can get the resolution up to 1080P 16:9 120 FPS with Video Stabilization on... The second I go to 4K resolutions with Video Stabilization it freezes...

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

Thank you mariustanya for your answer.
It is a bit frustrating as a consumer to get always the same answer from GoPro: update manually, contact support for a replacement, when it is stated that it's not fixing the issue, that it's probably (let's hope) a firmware problem that should be fixed. I'm sure you can understand that frustration.

I already contacted the team and informed about all these problems. They finally suggested a replacement, which I know it's not going to fix the issue. But I hope the team is really checking these problems and not just saying so to keep us happy.
We all know GoPro is not having a good moment. If you don't keep your costumers happy, be sure they won't buy your devices again and will tell other to not do so. We are the last ones defending GoPro and we bought your products, so it would be smart to treat us well.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

[ New ]
I highly recommend doing an exchange if that is what the GoPro Support Team is offering. I use my HERO7 Black almost daily and have only had freezing when using a specific SanDisk Extreme v30 card (I have other SanDisk Extreme v30 and Samsung Evo Select cards that I use and don't cause freezing).

I use a variety of resolutions, frame rates, and Protune settings. I almost always have GPS, Connections and Quik Capture on and often use Voice Commands. I use the camera primarily in the UP orientation but also use Auto when using the bite mount and surfing.

I only use 64GB and 32GB cards. I always offload my media after a shoot and then format my SD card in my computer (Using Windows Explorer) and then again in the camera. I mostly use the dual charger as I often use more than one battery, but I've also charged with the camera. My cameras are all updated manually. About once a month I perform a Full format on my SD cards if they have been used extensively.

I don't get freezing. I don't get battery drain. I use my camera in various conditions mostly ranging from 30F (0C) to the low/mid 90sF (34C).

If you have tried different SD cards from the recommended list and have done a manual update, then perhaps you should exchange the camera instead of waiting for an update. At worse, you'll be out a camera for a week. If the issue persist, your in the same spot waiting for an update. But, if it doesn't happen with your new camera, then you can stop wasting time and unnecessary frustration.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

In my case, I'm doing a project in a daily basis, so I can't be one week without the camera, especially if it's not fixing anything. I'm also not sure if the replacement will be a new camera or a refurbished one.

One question: when you copy your files to your computer: do they keep the correct time? Mine have a problem with the time, as the timezone is not recorded it's assumed it's on UTC and then it's adding a +1 (my timezone) when copying the files. This problem has been also extensively debated here in the forums.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

[ New ]
I'll have to look at my files when I get home to tell you the time variance, but I know that if I mix GoPro footage with other cameras it doesn't match up. It's frustrating for sure, especially when doing multi cuts from different cameras shooting in one take. I've just become accustomed to using placards at the start of my videos and keeping a record of recording number of each camera when I'm doing big projects like this. It seems more time consuming and burdensome than it really is. Even if the time was right, I've gotten so used to this with flow I'd keep it up.

BTW, replacement cameras are new. They do come in a non-commercial brown box and have been tested (so there is that use), but otherwise they are brand new. The brown box confuses a lot of people. When you return your camera, you only return the camera without battery or accessories. It would be silly and wasteful if GoPro sent the camera in the marketing box.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

[ New ]

I did a manual firmware re-install last night. Ran a test starting last night with these settings: 16:9, 1080/24, stabilization ON, gps OFF, protune OFF, quik start OFF, voice control OFF, autopower off NEVER.

I have two separate ipads, each connected to indvidually to one Hero7Black. When I got up this morning the 128gb card was full, 7H41M of video. Both cameras were off even though they were plugged in and had the autopower off set to NEVER. So there's a fault, although I'm happy they didn't freeze. I have not ad the solid red light since.

Beginning testing in 4K now. I had one camera stop recording and power down after just 5minutes of 4K/30 with all other settings same as above.

The camera seems stable at 1080, but once I go to 4k, that's where the trouble starts.

USING SANDISK 128GB ExtremePlus 4k as recommended by GoPro.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

[ New ]

Latest tests are after succesful manual update with 1.7 firmware on both Hero7 Black units. Plugged in to usb/ac power supply.

I ran them all night connected to their own dedicated iPad 1080/30 on one, 1080/24 on the other. Screensaver-NEVER, Auto off-NEVER. They both filled the card. HOWEVER, unit #1 the screen was OFF and disconnected from the iPad. I touched the camera's touchscreen and it did not come on. It's wifi adapter was still on and as soon as I connected to it on its iPad, the unit powered right up via ipad and worked. So at least it doesn't shut off until it is finished recording, regardless, the camera failed. Had I desired the camera to be on for monitoring purposes, I would be out of luck. If I set it to NEVER shut off, that means NEVER. Needs to be adressed by GoPro. The solid red light problem has NOT happened since the manual update.

4K tests on both Hero7 Black units -

I ran them both at 4k/30fps each connected to their own dedicated iPad. Same settings as above 1080 test except higher res. Unit#1 failed just after 9 minutes and shut down while unit#2 is still recording right now. I touched the cam screen on unit#1 to check to see if unit was on, but it was off. The unit started right up from the iPad after I reconnected to its wifi adapter (so wifi adapter is still on even though cam touchscreen was off). I went to settings, and sure enough, the NEVER setting in screensaver was reset to 1 minute.

As I type, Hero7#2 just failed right in front of my eyes. It was just over one hour at 4K/30fps. This time the camera turned off and so is its wifi adapter. I used the power button on the camera and it powered right up. This time when I am going to connect to the wifi I am prompted for a password. It was not asking before. After waiting one minute, I was able to reconnect without a re-entering the already saved password. I presume I was just not waiting long enough for the camera's operating system to be ready.

So once again, the cameras are stable while recording at 1080, but may shut down after the mem card is full.

Running at 4K/30, the odds are better than 50% that the camera will shut down at some point during my recording. NOT ACCEPTABLE GOPRO. Either change your name to GoAmateur and sell them for $49.99 or fix the problem and update ASAP.

And yes, I'm using the approved SanDisk 4K Extreme 128gb card.

Fully disappointed this time, as Go Pro 7 black is the top of the line product which is making so much problems.I also just bought a brand new 7 Black 15 days back, and it started freezing. Went to the customer service here in TH, they said firmware was not updated which they have updated now so therefore there would not be a freezing problem anymore. After two days again it was freeze. Bought new memory card which is compatible with 7 black, and still problem exists. Black 7 have already ruined one of my Diving trip, hence no idead if I can get a replacement of this peice which is still under warranty.

After wasting my time in a chat with GoPro trying to SOLVE the problem, I went to Best Buy and they exchanged both cameras yesterday. Problem solved for me.

This time I did not allow the iPad app to update the cameras at all and instead went straight to the manual update using the flash card. I also did manual update on prior defective cameras but problems persisted. Both new cameras are recording in 4k and fill the EXACT SAME Sandisk 128gb flash cards I was using in the defective cameras without shutting down. Both cameras are recording in 1080/60 and fill the sd cards and do not turn off. Stabilization on. Plugged in to power supplies all night. No overheating. NICE.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

[ New ]

As someone suggested here, changing Low Light to OFF solved my GoPro freezing issues, it seems. Before that, I also tried everything, and followed the following steps:

1- format (full, not quick) approved SD cards in Windows 10 laptop

2- download latest update and copy unzipped UPDATE folder to SD card

3- factory reset GoPro

4- placing SD card with succesful update

5- format SD card again within the GoPro preferences

It can not get any 'cleaner' than that.

I tried this with 2 different approved SanDisk 64GB cards and always the same issues. Image on screen freezes frequently. I had narrowed it down that after shooting, the image mostly freezed before the 1 minute screen saver if I kept moving and turning the camera. After that, sometimes I could shoot again, and sometimes it would freeze the camera completely, having to do the 10 seconds mode button hold.

Now with Low Light OFF, I have not been able to 'provoke' any screen freeze.

I was planning to return the camera on Monday, but now will hang on to it for a while longer to do some more testing, especially after reading that other users have experienced even far worse issues with their cameras. I could live without the Low Light feature, but as said here before, this 400 EUR camera should work perfectly right out of the box with all features enabled.

I owned the Hero 4 and 5 and they served me well, without any major issues. I like this Hero 7 a lot, but these freezing issues have got me pretty worried about GoPro company's policy, allowing the release of new products with major flaws. As suggested by someone, if these are Beta versions and you want that your customers point out the hick-ups, put a BETA sticker on the box and reduce the price!

I strongly suggest to GoPro to sort this out a.s.a.p., and at least confirm that they are looking in to it.

Re: Hi my brand new hero 7 black constantly freezes after first switch on and update,

[ New ]

This is an issue that I think is just in how the camera is made?  As of 3/9/2019 my gopro 7 black still loves to freeze up, lag horribly or the even better option delete un selected photots and videos. Today was the final straw for me as I'm currently(after online support chat just never responded after their first message and then dropped by their troubleshooting over the phone with no call back) in the process of exchanging the camera for a new one. Good news though dont expect to get a fix anytime soon as they will do nothing in terms of sending a new one until they have gotten and processed your camera which if you have done the trade up program you know thats gunna be a while. Pretty Disappointed overall from camera functionality to some of the worst customer service I have got to experience. I hope this camera exchange fixes the issue the video that it does capture is amazing. Multipule SD cards had been purchased with the model numbers coming directly from their site, manual firmware updates and resets are the things we've tried to do to fix it.
