I ended up giving my first one back and getting a free replacement. So far, my second one has performed perfectly. The only thing that happened was today my voice command didn't work no matter what I did. I finally performed a factory reset and it's back to normal.

I am at my wits end. I purchased the original camera on Feb 2, 2019. Now, on May 16 I am on the 4th camera, the 3rd replacement, all due to camera freeze. Yes, I reported a few days ago that this camera was finally working. On it's 2nd outing I was never able to get a single recording. I had to pull the battery 5 times before I finally put it away. 

 

I just called GoPro and after 4 non-functioning cameras I requested a refund, realizing I will lose the Hero 3 I sent in on their Trade-up program. I was told I am now more than 30 days since the original purchase date and a refund will not be provided. WHAT? I'VE NEVER HAD A WORKING PRODUCT!!!! Nope, now way, no how will they provide a refund. So now I am either stuck with a non-functioning camera or will have to continue down the warranty replacement trail.

 

How on this planet is this ever considered good customer service? I've litleraly never had a working product and I can't get my money back! I cannot begin to explain how pissed I am. We, as consumers, should have some protection from companies like this. Steal your money and give you nothing. 

 

I guess my only option is to contact every consumer protection agency I can find. I could try my local news TV station but they'll probably pass on the story. I am at a complete loss. What else can I do? I just want my money back because after nearly 3 months I've never had a working product. This companies customer service policies are to benefit them, not you. Good Luck.

That's bad, no argument there.

 

The Support Chat person I dealt with was amiable, but ultimately it was the 'manual update and recommended SD card fixes all' answer we know so well from this forum. Even when on with them I got the screen to freeze when not recording via just spinning it around in multiple axis. They still said that was a fix.

 

Other comments in the chat point to ways to mitigate, and we've seen some of these on the forums:

- Lock the orientation (e.g. to up) as it seems it's the camera trying to sort its orientation out which is possibly hanging it. I'm blaming the new portrait feature here just because I have no use for it.  This orientations locking seems to have worked for me.

- Disable low light. I haven't tried this.

 

Straight off - having to disable any claimed function in a product you paid for, whether you use it or not, is just nonsense.

Absolutely, I agree disabling features to get the camera working is suboptimal. I'm willing to do this as I think the firmware will be fixed.

I just don't want to send the product back over and over if it's a software problem.

What I don't get is that there are known bugs like the crashes with the dark mode and they don't even fix that. Hero 7 really seems to be abandoned.

I personally am not expecting another firmware update for the 7, as GoPro is most certainly in the version 8 cycle.

 

All I can hope is to get as much value out of my 7 as I can over the next few years, and see what is available if I still need an action cam in a few years.

 

I had a HeroHD2 which was great fun, then I got a 5black, which was a nice continuation and wasn't planning to replace it, but my partner knew how much usage I get out of my gopros, and saved to get me a 7black for Xmas. I've been pretty objective on this forum I think, considering my partner is embarressed and annoyed. She feels like I have a worse deal now than I had before.

 

When the 7 works, it is nice, but there are people on this forum who struggle to get anything out of it, and those people - rightly - should look elsewhere when they get money together again (because this stuff is often a hobby thing and expensive). GoPro is a public company, I see no value in attacking or defending it, just as a user, getting what I can from the product I bought.

 

What we see though is that GoPro lost the low end of its market to brands like Yi, and smartphones now they're getting waterproof, and whilst one round of higher end competitors fell away (Ghost, Contour), we're now seeing people like DJI come in, and they have the benefit of major brand recognition from another market, and that to fall back on. GoPro has the GoPro.

Yep, been around the gadget game long enough to know they are done with the 7 with the 8 on the horizon. You'll likely never see another firmware update.  If your 7 is not working you're only option is to keep getting them warranty replaced, quickly, as I'm sure they'll say you waited too long to return it.

There is good news.  Despite the fact that GoPro won't ackwnowledge a software problem or a problem at all beyond "Have you tried a different SD card and have you tried to update the camera firmware again?" a third party company has provided a hardware solution to the problem.  Looks like it's called the DJI Osmo Action.  Doesn't appear to have any of the locking up issues or file transfer issues plagued by the Hero 7.

Good one. I'm sure GP will lose a lot of sales regardless of the Action's capability because it's a well known company. Their new action cam stands up to the Hero 7 in all aspects except low light capture. That will limit my purchasing right now as most of my use is MTB in the woods so I need good low light capability. I will however keep my eye on the blogs/forums as that improvement should be a pretty simple firmware update. And because this is a new camera you can bet they'll be all over making improvements pretty quickly.

I bought a go pro 7 black at the end of last year it also used to freeze no matter what card I tried , also before and after updates

the camera was damaged, they don’t like intece heat .

any way I bought another new one yesterday and hey presto it’s doing exactly the same..... I do t think they should have released this model there are far to many bugs

I've tried my new go pro and can say it's the first time i used it after a week ago I bought it
and back screen is freezing when tried to swipe from time lapse mode to video mode... (only menu icon which freezing in video icon) and can't do switching other menu..
I did turned it off because I can't do recording/ anything except forced turn it off
(push & hold power button around almost a minute, longer than normal for do turning off my gopro)

 

before that happen, I've already updated latest firmware upgrade from go pro apps

 

is that kind of bug?

Everyone here’s what’s up....

GoPro doesn’t give two sh*ts about it’s costomers. They refuse to give me my money back after I asked for it but they told me I had to do the return first. DO NOT BUY THIS POS. On every lift and any time GoPro is brought up I tell them how horrid of a company and product they made. This is the same company that lied about its drone numbers to get more money from investors. You really think they care now that they have our money? Not one bit. So what I have done is spread the word as much as possible about the scam this company has become to be. I have told well over 2000 people how terrible it is plus I write it in their posts in Facebook and Twitter. Destroy their name is all we can do at this point. Is what it is

Buy return I mean my broken camera that didn’t work I wanted a refund for but they said I had to do a replacement first since I had told them how much it was freezing. I asked to return it and was told I needed to do a replacement first. Guess who is outside of their time to get there money back now. Me! Yeah it is craziness

I received my Hero 7 Black yesterday, found that it freezes on any Hypersmooth setting within 1-2 seconds of beginning a recording. It also creates glitchy artefacts on the 4k30 and 1080/120.

Tried every trick from this post, no dice.

Called GoPro, they seem to accept now that if you have a recommended SD and have tried the manual update then there must be an issue with the camera.

Still facing a 2 week RMA process or just returning to the seller I got it from. Disappointed.

@kbuckgopro are say they refused to give you a refund and insisted on a warranty replacement? That would push you past the 30 day return period. THAT, I suspect is illegal. Folks, call your bank, call your credit card company, call the consumer protection agency, call your states attorney general.

We checked with Support and we see that you contacted them past the 30-day money back guarantee period and went through the warranty replacement process. If you are still having issues with the replacement camera, it would be best to continue working with Support. There is a workflow that they follow to make sure that the issue is resolved completely, specially for persistent issues. 

 

@timmarshgopro - There is a process that we follow regarding granting refund requests. Should you have further concerns, please continue working with Support, specially that you already had multiple camera replacements. We have also tagged the team handling the case to work closely with you regarding the cases. Thanks @mariustanya however they have told me a refund is not available since it's now past the 30 refund period. I was told the only thing that will ever happen going forward is to continue to replace the defective cameras. Sadly, I've never had a functioning camear.  Are you saying a refund will be provided? If so, how do I go about obtaining the refund?

Then why wouldn't they just tell me that when I talked and asked about it since the camera never has worked? And oh either does the one I was sent as a replacement(not shocking)I honestly don’t care at this point. Have my money I’ll take an item that works sometimes. I’d rather just not have to deal with it and take my money elsewhere. Shouldn’t have to keep getting replacements. The first should would work but that’s a lot to expect I guess.

I'm definitely considering a Osmo Action but to be fair it's a brand new product so it may have a bunch of issues that we're just not aware of yet.. on the other hand, I never had a DJI drone freeze or stop recording, so there's that.

 

GoPro - really there's only one thing I want to know: Based on multiple user reports, has this issue been recognized as a problem and is it being addressed? What is the case/bug # - something any mature company would have created by now? Even without details, that alone would show that you actually follow the basic principles of SW/HW development and make at least some effort to resolve this.

 

If you can't even share that and the only response we will ever see is that same sentence over and over again then I'm afraid I'll need to quote a poster not far above me and assume that you just don't give a **bleep** and I will base my future purchasing decisions and recomendations on that.

Third replacement and still the same freezing issue.

When the low light and stabilization are activated at the same time there is freezing issue.
When low light is on OFF there is no issue.

After years of buying Chinese clones I gave up with the crappy performance and succumbed to the premium brand of gopro only to find its not a premium product. No good shouting at support they have a canned response prepared, the answer is to light up gopro Corp on twitter, can guarantee it'll be a sh*tty Monday morning in development, validation and quality at gopro corp

UPDATE - Now that I've switched SD cards and turned AUTO LOW LIGHT off, then got a replacement unit, everything is working well. It's still a shame that with an expensive camera such as this, you have to disable certain features to get it to work correctly. I just returned from a motorcycle tour in Spain. In one of the first videos I made, when using the camera on my helmet, with stabilzation turned on, the footage was like sitting on a boat in waves, so I shot the remaining tour with stabilzation turned off. The quality of video is awesome. So clear and vibrant. If they'd just fix the current issues, this would be such a great camera. You're lucky to have a Camera. I replaced one locally and another directly and did not have a GoPro to film with when going abroad this winter. Then I received 2 new cameras, and they where just as faulty. The story continues:

2019-05-10 Chat GoPro (not saved): Telling GoPro I still have issues. They ask me to
provide a video of the problem.

2019-05-13 Chat GoPro (Carolina): Where can I provide the video (GoPro limit is 25MB), it's
over 1 GB. YouTube is suggested by GoPro. Tried to upload private and share the
link https://youtu.be/FAAUYX0_Bsg. But had to make it public for them to see.

The video is long, so Carolina will forward it to the team, and I shall receive an
update once they hear from the them. E-mail address is given. I'll need the cameras
within the 25th of may. No problem I'm told.

from Carolina.

Then it's the same all over again: Please try to observe the camera first if it will still freeze. Going through the update process all over again.(97 lines of conversation).

I got lucky with mine, I got an exchange through the ebay seller I bought my 7 black from and the second unit it working perfectly so far (as perfectly as any GoPro that is).

 

Based on my experience and this thread my advice to anyone buying one is to buy it from a shop where you can check it works in person and guarantee an exchange on a short timescale should it have any issues. Or buy used where the seller can confirm it has been working properly.

 

Tough situation to be in.

I tried that on the fist swap, had one sent to GoPro and one replaced locally. The local shop had to wait for an approval from GoPro, it did not help me that time. Now none of the serial numbers are a match to the receipts any more. So I'm stuck with GoPro. Except from when I'm filming with my other non GoPro cameras (which unfortunally isn't action cameras).
But I totally agree with the post above, keep it with the local shop. GoPro puts you through the same firmware updates again and again and....

Hi guys.
I had the same problems. But ONLY when the original and very expensive mic connector was connected. It froze on all kind of occasions: while charging through the mic cable; while just being connected doing nothing but that; while turning record off; while turning cam off etc.
I removed the go pro mic connector and the problem was gone.
I have a 6 and a 7. The 6 had so many flaws and was not compatible with multiple phones i owned. The 7 has less flaws but battery life sucks when you try to make good footage so i need to charge all the time and i want a mic on the setup too. Whenever you call Helpdesk, there is the endless student with their troubleshooting steps, and always the blame on other devices, while i seriously think the flaws are mostly in go pro itself. You overprice your accessoires, and made us pay through 6 to get 7 better. With no physical help desks in Europe i am growing very irritated with the go pro business model. If you want to stay in business, get your act together please.

Well, here's a thing, I received my action camera yesterday, came with about 40% charge and as soon as it was fired up prompted me to connect to the app and update the firmware, did that in about five minutes and it was all good. I had put a 32GB SanDisk Extreme card in and everything was operating as it should, stills and video captured with no freezing issues so pretty much doing what a camera should do right out of the box. Yaay. The reason this cam worked with no problems? Because it is not a GoPro Hero 7 Black, it is a DJI Osmo Action. And that my friends is all anyone needs to know, stuff like this isn't rocket science, if a company isn't listening to you then find one that does. Peace.

So i went though suggestion of “remove device” off iOS device and now won’t recognize camera because it is frozen and I cannot open preferences to start pairing. I am co fused and am ready to return camera. It already had latest update so I am at a loss of what to do other than let the battery run down and try again. I am not home so no computer to download the update folder anyway. I am riding dirt trails and have. I thing to show. SIGH

I have now received my third set of GoPro Hero 7 Blacks. I bought these to cover an event this summer. This will not be easy with the way they behave. They are freezing, and not responding to the remote. There annot be a QA department at this company. I waited over 10 years for an action camera that can meet my requirements. As it turns out, this camera does not yet exist, just the promise of one. There's no time for another replacement (which probably would be just as bad). Maybe I'll try a DJI, to bad that I've spent a lot on the GoPro set up.

I'll have to warn the other 1000 participants against GoPro. It's a shame, since the image quality and antishake is good. But that doesn't help when you cannot capture the moment.  My experience is like this: If you can start the camera, start your action and finnish it within 1 hour, then stop the camera you should be fine. Otherwise stay away from GoPro.

I warned everybody ion this forum in December not to buy the hero 7 because of all these issues>
You didnt seem to listen if you did read it.
Now your acting as the one spreading the word.
You would have saved yourself alot o=f grief and the rest of us grief to because you sound like you want to have everyone think your the on=e that found all this out.
Well your not, I gave up on the hero 7 1 month after I recieved it, Will not upgrade my hero 5

and got 6 years out of my hero 3.

 

Plus Ive already recomended the DJI, Another one you didnt read and are a jiohnny come lately again.

 

Do some research, READ FORUMS. STOP USING GOPRO 7

I don’t understand why it’s so long for a new update. I bought the 7 more than 3 month and no update. When I check for update before the 7.0 You find an update every month. And now it’s toooooo quite. Hello Mister GoPro wake up please.
