Hero7Black getting Stuck and OverHeating

[ New ]
I own a GoPro Hero7Black, bought from Amazon India, on 28 October 2018 and have been using it so far. The camera received quite a few updates from time to time, however following are some of the key problems I have been facing on a pretty regular basis and I want a solution for this please.

PROBLEMS:

1. One Touch Recording gets stuck sometimes and camera over heats (same issue happens even on my old Hero4Silver as well). The entire camera becomes unresponsive and the only solution I found then is to remove and re-insert the battery back. In worst case scenario I have to repeat this step twic to get it going again.

2. Screen becomes unresponsive while trying to access basic functions / modes. Same resolution as point one works, if it doesn't respond in some time.

I have tried all basic t/s steps including factory reset, which still hasn't resolved any of the aforesaid problems. So what else / new can be done ?

@asiride
That card should be fine.
For best results (not mandatory, but seems to be the most reliable) try the following:
1) Download the Manual update to your computer and extract the UPDATE folder
2) Using a USB/SD adapter, insert your card into your computer and perform a FULL (not Quick) format
3) Copy the UPDATE folder (not UPDATE.zip) to the blank SD
4) Eject the card and insert in your camera. Power on using the side Mode button
5) Once the update is complete, go to Preferences>Reset and format the card in the camera
6) Go back to Preferences>Reset and do a Factory Reset
7) In camera video settings, change to 1080p/60fps and turn Auto Low light OFF
8) In Preferences>Display change orientation from Auto to either UP or Down (depending on how you mount your camera)
9) Do not delete media from the card in the camera until you are done recording for the day and are ready to offload your media
10) Always format the card in the camera before using the camera for the day
11) If you are going to use the Quick Capture feature, first turn the camera on using the side Mode button and leave the camera on for about a minute (take a photo if you like). Turn the camera off and it should be ready for Quick Capture.
12) Periodically perform a FULL format of your card in your computer and do a factory reset of the camera (always format again in the camera).

Hi @asiride

What SD card are you using?

Please see if resetting the camera will work.  Reset Camera Settings
If it's still the same, proceed with a manual software update. https://gopro.com/update/
Let us know how it goes.

Other users also suggest turning the AUTO LOW LIGHT option off.

Let us know how it goes.
You may also reach out to our Support Team for assistance through https://gopro.com/help/ContactUs

Thanks!

Hello @aragon1006

Thanks for your valuable suggestions. Regarding the steps, you suggested, here's a sequential reply to them -

What SD card are you using? Samsung EVO64GB (suggested as a Bundle purchase, while purchasing the camera from Amazon India)

Please see if resetting the camera will work. - Done twice, problem still remains and relapses.

If it's still the same, proceed with a manual software update - This I shall try today and revert here.

Turning the AUTO LOW LIGHT option off - shall try this as well, and let you know here.

You may also reach out to our Support Team for assistance through  - I tried this in the first place before putting it up here in the Forum. However, this didn't work for me very well. The customer support email addresses, which I had and from where I have received technical support earlier for my Hero4Silver, kept on returning automated responses and asking me to try the chat options. I tried that too, but it kept on saying "Option not available for you" . I even tried the India contact numbers, as given...even that didn't connect.

So I shall try the steps as you've mentioned as pretty much my last resort.

Many Thanks

Sam / As I Ride

Samsung EVO PLUS or EVO Select (not EVO or EVO+) should work fine in the camera. If it is not the PLUS version, consider changing your card to one from this list https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/microSD-Card-Considerations

Try before you do any refashing again. that you did not mention.

A full format,.  We want to hear from you what a full format is to make sure you are doing it correctly.?

Where was the card from since this happens to your other camera as well, was that same card used in the camera

Hi - just bought 2 Hero7Black going to record long meetings (4-5 hours). Testing now - and camera gets too hot. When removing battery, and attaching to 220V power, it works - but now it does not connect to my phone app/internet?
You said removing the battry did the trick for you - do you mean replacing the battery with another??

No not a replacement but just taking the battery out and putting it back in...that helped temporarily in my case.

Awsome solution :D :D :D :D :D

"Change video resolution to 1080"

So that's why you dumped $400 to make movies in 1080p instead of 4K :D You don't want to buy my sjcam for $300? Recording in 1080 with no problem with all the other settings ;-)

@charvel
Purposefully leaving out the rest of the sentence? The solution is not recording in 1080p, this step was to change to 1080p/60fps to turn off Auto Low Light. I could have just as easily written 4K/60fps but I find 1080p/60fps to be a more common resolution/frame rate.

As far as making "movies in 1080p instead of 4K", The theoretical resolution of 35 mm film is greater than that of 2K digital cinema. 2K resolution (2048×1080) is also only slightly greater than that of consumer based 1080p HD (1920x1080). However, since digital post-production techniques became the standard in the early 2000s, the majority of movies, whether photographed digitally or on 35 mm film, have been mastered and edited at the 2K resolution (Digital cinema From Wikipedia). Although, even at 4K, you are probably better off shooting Movies with a Full frame sensor or at least a micro 4/3 instead of with an action camera.

That being said, Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is recorded almost entirely on GoPro cameras. Additionally, GoPro cameras are often used in movie production. Hardcore Henry was entirely shot on GoPro cameras, Face to Face was shot entirely on GoPro cameras, GoPro cameras were also used in the movie, "The Martian", "The Nest", "Red Tails", "Ant Man and the Wasp" https://preview.tinyurl.com/y2aj6m4q , and many more.

You can keep the SJCAM. Even if it's the SJ9 Strike, which oddly still doesn't seem to be released even though they were taking pre-orders for a June 15 release (although sears shows it for $404.09 https://preview.tinyurl.com/y2pe8m7b), I'd still prefer to have stabilization at 4K/60fps (which SJCAM cannot deliver), Time Warp, GoPro Plus, and a much better overall ecosystem. I completely understand why you want to sell your SJCAM, but this isn't the best place for it.

Re: Hero7Black getting Stuck and OverHeating

Let me put it this way - I really don't care what anyone records what on. But I don't care what I do it on and how I do it. When I was close to buying "your" camera I found information about typical problems. Overheating, suspension - resulting in lack of recording. It's probably something I'd like to experience while recording a sport, right? I am not convinced by the voices of those who say that everything works for them. If they start recording for 5 minutes, it can and does work for them. I need to turn it on and forget it works. Your equipment does not guarantee this, although it is called the "best sports camera".
And one more thing - do you really think that when I buy a sportcam for $400, I have to figure out how to make it record in the resolution it wants? No.

Good to know.  Then you should be happy with SJCAM. Smiley LOL

It was an example, but apparently you didn't understand.

I'm not sure if your customers who come here almost every day with the same problems have a reason to laugh.
