Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

My GoPro Hero7 Black occassionally freezes when I end a recording session. When this happens I have to remove the battery and replace it to unfreeze the camera, and the last few video files (or sometimes just the last video file) from the recording session sputters to a frozen video image while the audio continues recording normally.

You can see an example of this here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWGY-Dcxp5Q

In this example, the jerkiness at the start of the video is in the original file from the camera, and then the image freezes completely about 20 seconds in.  In this example the image shows a weird "split screen" view, though today when the camera froze the frozen image is just a normal image.

The issue is with the file itself; this is not just an issue with playback on the GoPro or elsewhere.  The issue is visible when viewing it on the GoPro, when viewing the MP4 file on my computer and after uploading the video to YouTube.

I contacted GoPro support for this issue and received a replacement camera under warranty, but the first time I used the replacement camera the same issue happened.

I use QuikCapture so I normally end my recording sessions by pressing the button on the top of the camera.  When I do this normally I hear a beep followed by 7 rapid beeps and the camera shuts off.  When the problem occurs I hear the first beep, but not the remaining beeps.  The screen doesn't show anything and looks mostly black with a faint white glow.  Pressing the buttons doesn't do anything, even holding them down for 10+ seconds.  The only way to resolve this is to remove the battery, at which point the faint white glow on the screen disappears.  Whenever this happens the files always show the issue described above.

This issue is intermittent, and I have not been able to find any reproducible steps to cause it.  Sometimes everything records fine and other times I will encounter the problem.  I've had the issue with long and short recording sessions, but then had long and short recording sessions without having the issue.

I am using Samsung 128 Evo Plus SD cards (which are listed on the supported SD cards page).  I used the same SD cards for the last year in my GoPro Hero6 without an issue.  I use my Hero6 and Hero7 at the same time (to record my bicycle rides, one facing forward and one facing back) and have tried swapping SD cards between them, and continue to have this problem on the Hero7 but not the Hero6.  I format the SD cards in-camera regularly, including when moving the cards between cameras and almost always before each recording session.

This problem continues to happen even as I regularly swap SD cards and batteries.

I've updated the cameras to the latest firmware, doing a manual update of the firmware to v1.51 at the request of GoPro support.

I have noticed the problem seems to happen at the start of a video file within a recording session.  For example on today's ride I used the replacement Hero7 for the first time with a newly formatted SD card.  The first file is GX010001.MP4.  This first file and every file through GX050001.MP4 is fine, i.e. I have good footage from the first 45 minutes or so of the recording session.  The issue starts at the beginning of the file GX060001.MP4 and the entire file has this problem, as does GX070001.MP4 and GX080001.MP4 which show the same frozen image as GX060001.MP4, so I have about 20 minutes from the end of the recording session with the same frozen image but ongoing audio recording.  It appears that when the issue occurs it happens when the GoPro starts a new video file segment within a single recording session, and once this issue occurs the rest of the files will have this problem as well.

The settings I use:

- Resultion: 2.7K 4:3

- FPS: 30

- Field of View: Wide

- Video Stabilization: On

- Clip: Off

- Protune: On

- Shutter: Auto

- EV Comp: 0.0

- ISO Min: 100

- ISO Limit: 1600

- White Balance: 5500K (the issue has happened with this on auto as well I believe)

- Sharpness: High (the issue has also happened when this was Low)

- Color: GoPro Color

- Audio Protune: Off

- Audio: Wind Only

- QuikCapture: On

- GPS: On

- Video Format: NTSC

- Video Compression: Compatible (the issue has also happened with this was HEVC)

Is this a known problem and/or do any workarounds exist?

This is the GoPro Hero7 Black with the latest firmware (manually updated) and using one of the SD cards GoPro recommends. When the problem happens the video...

Thank you for the feedback, @joeyr541 . Appreciate you providing details on the troubleshooting steps already performed as well as the settings when the issue/s were observed. Have you been able to observe such an issue when recording was not done via QuikCapture, or when resolution used is not 2.7K 4:3? We are bringing this to the attention of our team and we would like to gather as much information for reproduction and further testing. Thank you very much!

Thank you for your response.  I have not yet tried modes other than 2.7K 4:3 or not using QuikCapture yet.  I will try these out and let you know if the problem goes away.

Also I have posted the example from the replacement camera I mentioned in the original post (GX060001.MP4) in case another example helps:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK1JMQkPlgY

Hello, the same thing happens to me, the image freezes, and it keeps recording sound, it has happened to me in 4k 60f in the other resolutions I have not tried it. I have already posted a post explaining the problem, but they have not answered me. The same is because I have put it in Spanish.
Sometimes I fail and others record well. It is a problem that does not always appear, only occasionally.

I will be attentive to see what solutions they give. Or if I have to change the camera.

a greeting.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]
Hi,

Same thing has just happened to me on my GoPro Hero7 Black (firmware recently updated). Just recorded a 39:11 minute clip today - Samsung 64 Evo card / H.264+HEVC compression/1440-60-W settings - and after the first 56s, the video frame freezes while the audio continues on. This is apparent on the GoPro itself and when I access the media files via the app on my phone - there the clip is split into multiple 8~min files, which are all frozen on that one image for their entirety bar the first one which has the 56s of working footage.

Besides obviously wanting to prevent this from happening again, I was hoping there might be some insight on if this is a corruption, a recording fault or what to see if the file could somehow be recovered. I’m on holiday and the specific experience I bought the GoPro for was the subject of this recording. I can’t really ‘try again’ as I’ll never get a chance to do it again - so will be really annoyed if the entire recording is gone.

Worth mentioning that all the other videos I’ve taken worked fine, and the other previous videos on the same card are all OK, though I tended to always use shorter clips of under 15mins. I unfortunately can’t do much trouble shooting as I’m still on holiday and don’t have a computer.

Hoping for some good news...

My GoPro Hero7 white, that I literally received today is frozen after taking one night picture! I can’t turn it off, my app won’t turn it off. While shooting today it restarted maybe twice. What can I do???

Hi @gwena79

What SD card are you using?

There is a required update for the HERO7 Silver and HERO7 White.

Please refer to this link https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/required-update-for-hero7-white-and-silver

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks!

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

The same issue from the original report happened again today, this time when I was NOT using QuikCapture.  I mostly used the same settings as described in the initial post except the White Balance was Auto and the Sharpness was Low.  I was using a different SD card than I had before (a new and freshly formatted Samsung EVO Plus 256GB which is listed on GoPro's SD card page).

I turned the GoPro on at the start of a bike ride using the side button and then started recording with the top button.  A little over 20 minutes into my recording session I touched the screen and saw that on the display the image was frozen even though it was still recording, and when I pressed the top button to stop the recording the camera froze and I had to take the battery out and put it back in.

When looking at the files, as often seems to be the case the problem happened right at the start of a file--in this case the first two files (GX010020.MP4 and GX020020.MP4, a total of about 18 minutes) were fine, but the third file (GX030020.MP4) had the same problem as described before where the first few seconds show a jerky image and then the image freezes but the audio continues.

The problem is intermittent, and I did not have the problem with later recording sessions on this same bike ride with the same settings/SD card/etc., including one session that was about 35 minutes long.

Notably I continue to not have this problem with my Hero6 which I always run at the same time as the Hero7 (the Hero7 on the front of my bicycle, the Hero6 on the back).  The Hero6 has essentially the same settings where possible as the Hero7, including the resolution and stabilization.

Has there been any luck in finding the source of this problem with the Hero7 and fixing it?  As it stands now I am not willing to use my Hero7 because of the strong possibility that I'll lose the footage.

@mariustanya
I have the newest update installed. I notized that the freezing is related to the battery power. At a lower battery state the chance of freezing increases (starts at around 20%). There was also no noticeable difference to the previous firmware.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

@mariustanya I experienced the same issue yesterday even after applying the 1.61 firmware update to the camera.  I've updated the firmware manually.

The issue was the same as before, with the same settings I've reported previously and in this case not using QuikCapture.  I have a couple of hours of video that captured just fine, but during one recording session at just under 18 minutes in the frozen video happened again.  Similar to most past instances the issue starts at the very beginning of one of the file segments (GX010039.MP4 and GX020039.MP4 are fine, GX030039.MP4 shows the problem starting in the first few seconds).

One other detail I just noticed about the file that has the issue is that it is much longer than a normal segment.  With my current settings each file segment gets split at 8 minutes 53 seconds / 4.01 GB.  In this case the file segment with the issue (GX030039.MP4) is 14 minutes 59 seconds and 3.48 GB.  I'm assuming this is just because the frozen image doesn't take much space and the algorithm for splitting files is based on file size and not time, but I'm including this detail in case it helps figure anything out.

Regarding the comment from @bravestar55076 about this happening more often with a low battery I haven't paid attention to the battery level so I can't say for certain one way or the other whether this applies in my case, but I'll pay attention to this in the future.  I do know of at least one case where the issue happened with a nearly full battery; in this case the issue happened at the very beginning of a recording session (I noticed it before the display screen had even shut off when I started the recording), but this was unusual--the issue usually happens during longer recording sessions.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

hi,

in 1.51 never had this kind of issues.

updated to 1.61 - without formating before the SD card

and I encounter in 2 days, 3 times exactly what you said.

- split video screen

- freeze image

- at the end freeze camera

Plus, the camera was slow responding:

- in menu

- power on/off

- when stop a video recording

- in undestand voice commands

What I did is:

- factory reset on H7 - I did not make the initial setup (language, pair with phone, etc....), power off

- format SD card in the laptop

- copied the UPDATE folder

- made the manual update

- format again the SD card

- went through the initial setings (language, pair with phone...)

the effect is visible:

- camera moves between menus very well

- no more delays in responding to power on/off, to video stop recording

- understands the voice commands better

- I recorded more than 70h of video, all 4K, with and w/o Protune, w and w/o stabilization - no more freeze, no more issues.

give it a try...

---and do not forget the rule of tumb:

- gopro is not good at all in dealing with "holes" in the SD card space

- so do not delete files from SD card

- copy what you need from the card

- and format it before starting a new video session, from camera menu

just me,

robert

I’ve recently purchased a hero 7 black and have used it twice mountain biking
1st time was fine, second time I switched camera on as normal and presses the shoot/record button and camera started recording
When I was at the bottom of the trail I had trouble switching camera off and had to pull the battery out
The video file recorded fine for the first minute and then it recorded in split screen ruining the footage
I’m using a 64gb SanDisk extreme and done the software update over the app on my IPhone app
I’m paid a lot of money and would expect this to be working to its capacity and not glitching and causing issues

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

I have the same issue, my Gopro Hero7 Black (firmware v01.61.00 installed via the Gopro App for Android) would sporadically and unpredictably freeze my 4K 60fps videos after a few seconds and only audio would be recorded. I even tried to repair these videos with available software with no luck, the video footage is completely lost.

I'm using a Samsung EVO Select 128GB card. I've noticed that sometimes when I format my card from either the Gopro or my computer and then do a performance test with CrystalDiskMark (free), both write and read speeds are around 40 MB/s (I repeated the test several times). Have in mind that the maximum bitrate of the Hero7 Black is 78 MB/s (4K) which may explain why some of my videos get frozen. Now, when I fully format my card from my computer (using exFAT file system), both write and read speeds are above 80 MB/s. I don't know how to explain these huge speed swings in my SD card but just in case I ordered a new SD card (SanDisk 128GB Extreme) and a new USB 3.0 card reader, I don't mind having a second SD card as backup during my trips to the mountain. I'll do performance tests again on the new card and will inform later if I still have issues with frozen videos. I recommend that you do a full format of your SD cards from your computer and several speed tests using CrystalDiskMark or similar software to rule out a faulty card. Also, it may be helpful to do a quick format after transfering files to your computer to ensure your Gopro starts with a clean file system every time you need it.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]
I'm sunnyridge20561 again. After I sent my comment I realized that the max bitrate of the Hero 7 black is 78 Mb/s , not 78 MB/s.

78 Mb/s = 9.75 MB/s, so any memory card with a consistent write speed faster than 9.75 MB/s should work. Anyways, I reset my Gopro to factory settings, manually installed the latest firmware, reset my Gopro to factory settings again, fully formatted the memory card in my computer and then tried to record long and short videos (more than 6 hs of footage in total). So far I haven't experienced frozen videos again. I hope this works for you too.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]
This really bugs me and people need to stop. Bitrate has nothing to do with how fast the SD card write speed needs to be. It has to do with the FILE size and how much information is being written per second. At 78 Mb/s, one video recorded for one hour would equate to a 4 GB video file. This is not the case. If you want to know the write speed per second needed, record for one minute and divide by 60.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

Daniel, before asking people to stop, I suggest you educate yourself. Just in case you didn't know, 1 hour has 3600 seconds. At a 78 Mbps bitrate, a 1-hour video would result in 78x3600=280800 Mb = 35100 MB = 34.7 GB.

As I mentioned before, your SD card needs to support a consistent write speed faster than 78 Mb/s = 9.75 MB/s if you want to record 4K@60fps videos with your Gopro Hero7 Black.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

I also have the same problem that the image freezes and the audio continues.

My Gopro 7 is updated with all of the latest updates as I only got it two weeks ago, and updated it when I got it out of the box.

I have just got back from skiing for a week and typically film using the Karma Grip, as I already own one (also updated for latest updates). However, on the couple of occasions when I mounted the Gopro on my head mount the video freezes after between 20 and 50 seconds. I use a SanDisk memory card and also changed the battery to a fully charged battery after one fail. Same result with the next bit of footage. No problems when using with the Karma Grip over several hours of filming, all using 4K:60fps.

Very frustrated, please could you share the above with the software team and report back.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

I followed the steps @robert1326 described above, and unfortunately it has not solved my problem.  At first I thought maybe it had worked because I went through a few recording sessions with an issue, but today the freezing issue as described before happened again in two separate recording sessions.

The steps I went through were:

- Factory reset the Hero7

- copy the 1.61 firmware update to an SD card and apply it to the Hero7

- again factory reset the Hero7, verifying it is still on 1.61 after this reset

- format my SD card on my Mac instead of in the camera

I also started paying attention to the battery level to see if I was seeing the same thing that @bravestar55076 mentioned regarding the issue happening more frequently with a low battery.  The last time the camera froze the battery was at about 75%, and the two times before that it was at about 50% so it doesn't seem like a low battery is causing it in my case.

One other thing I tried was turning off the GPS.  Just as with other things I've tried at first I thought maybe it worked because I had a few sessions with no freezes, but then I had the freezing issues again so that does not seem to be the cause.

hi,

not true.

this is not a continous write process like a copy a file.

it is more a burst.

I explained this in this forum many times.

in the interval of 1/fps the CPU has to cope a lot of processes like PT settings apply, stabilization (for wich needs the entire frame captured and the one before at least...), read GPS, video compression, audio process, etc.

and in a burst that maybe is a fraction of 1/fps, have to push the information in the SD card.

this is why the old SD standard U1, U3 (that measure only the linear throughput) is updated with this sequential speed benchmarks, called V.

(also the new A classes for the SD cards used on mobile, where the applications are on the SD card, not on the phone...this is new as well)

sd_card_speed.JPG

even the stream is 60Mb/s you will need a card rated 60MB/s sequential.

and yes, I know "b" and "B".

[ New ]

I have a couple more data points.

The video froze right after I started recording today (a few seconds into the first file, GX010025.MP4), and this was immediately after I swapped in a fully charged battery.  It's unusual for the first segment of video to freeze, but it has happened before.  I had recorded about an hour on the GoPro before swapping out the battery and having the video freeze, and then I had a couple more hours of recording after this without a problem.

I had also turned the "Wireless Connections" settings to Off before this session to see if that was possibly related, but it doesn't look like it is.

I still have the freezing image and audio continous to record. I started to record at lower resolution to see if it happens with 1080 too.

I was justing finishing a day of snowboarding in Laax and on my last battery with about 20% and the file is produced, about 4GB in size but the video stops playing after about 30 seconds.  Not sure if I can fix the file manually somehow, but only have the GoPro Hero 7 black a week now and not impressed that it is freezing up.  I never had this issue with my Hero 4.

@mariustanyaare there any updates on getting this issue resolved?

It's been a couple of months since my initial report, and with this issue it's frustrating to use the Hero7.  I've become better at periodically checking for freezes and resetting the camera by pulling the battery out to make sure I don't lose *too much* footage, but I shouldn't have to do this or deal with any lost footage.

Hi @joeyr541,

Have you tried using different SD card? (a Recommended SD card)

And reset the camera to factory settings, after resetting the camera install firmware update manually.

Please let us know if that will work.

One more thing, I am using it while playing snowboard. I found sometimes it happens when the GoPro 7 response is very slow. For example, I click the start recording button it will wait at least 5 to 10 seconds then start to beep 3 times.  The same thing happened to stop recording.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]

Hi @aragon1006 thanks for the update.  Unfortunately it doesn't look like it fixed the problem for me.

I applied the update manually (copying it to my SD card) and then formatted the SD card in the GoPro.

At first it seemed like it might be working, as the camera did not freeze on my 50 minute bicycle ride this morning.

It also didn't freeze during the first hour of my bicycle ride home.  Unfortunately it then froze with the same behavior as before--GX010081.MP4 through GX070081.MP4 were fine, the issue was present in GX080081.MP4 from the very start of the file (where the first couple of seconds the video shudders and then freezes with the audio still recording for the next 8 minutes until the end of my bike ride).

Since the update mentions low temperatures in case it helps it was 45F this morning (when there was no video freeze) and 60F tonight (when the video froze) with dry, sunny weather and not much wind.  I'm not sure what the temperature has been when it froze other times, though it's rarely below 40F when I ride.

Re: Hero7 Black Freezes, video file shows frozen image but audio continues recording

[ New ]
I applied the new update last night. Recording this morning in Saas Fee at the World Ice Climbing competition, and one of my videos froze again. The first 5 videos appear to be ok. When I got to the 6th video is froze up after a minute. I noted when recording the screen stopped responding but thought it was conserving battery. Utterly disappointed with this new GoPro 7, the main reason I got it was to improve quality of video recording in the cold weather. Looks like I will have to resort back to GoPro 4. I can't afford to not have video recording when I'm using footage to publish with. This product should be recalled if it doesn't meet the basic requirements of being able to record video. More disappointed that I have lost footage, which I have no second camera backup.

Sorry for the inconvenience @geoffd0,

May I know what SD card are you using?

It might be the cause of the problem.

Installing Supersuit might help.

This thread might help: https://community.gopro.com/t5/Cameras/Go-pro-hero-6-Cold-weather/td-p/70432

Supersuit doesn't help. Still frozen image. I think it might be a bug. At least if this case happened, GoPro should detect and start another recording.

в этой теме я писал о проблемах с видео при низких температурах. Я обновил камеру до версии 1.7. Проблема с зависанием осталась. Вот ссылка на видео:

Since the problem is not solved. I'm tired of these hangs. Probably in the near future I will switch to SONY camcorders.

This is the SD card I purchased only 3 weeks ago from Amazon. SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSDXC... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073JYC4XM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

NEVER use a SanDisk Ultra. It is perhaps the worst card that you can use. Be sure to use a card off of this list https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/microSD-Card-Considerations
Preferably 64GB.

I need to add my name to this list. Hero7 Black received it 12-31-18 Samsung EVO 64GB card, GoPro battery, and Mibote batteries. First use was in Wyoming snowmobiling, outside air temp lower 20’s, the camera mounted to a chest mount. Standard stock settings on the camera used the shutter button to turn on to record and then again to stop recording. All the videos worked great. Camera updated via GoPro Quick desktop app on a MAC last week maybe 1-24-19. Used it again this weekend 1-26/27 snowmobiling in Michigan, outside temp was 7 or lower, same memory card, same stock setting, using the shutter button to record, camera on top of the helmet. Most videos stopped recording an image at about 15 - 30 seconds, but the sound kept recording. I’m assuming I’m on the most current firmware. Will be watching this thread for a fix.

Has this issue now been resolved? It was incredibly disappointing to find that the majority of the footage from the best filming session I've ever had was all but unusable.

for GoPro guys, please priority this as P0 problem.

It must be fixed ASAP. Otherwise, I will never use any GoPro product.

@rafaelg17
You might want to try with a recommended SD card.

joeyr541, have you made any progress with the video freezing issues you’ve described? I have the same issues as you. Very frustrating!

This is obviously a problem with the GoPro that needs to be fixed ASAP, I have the same issue happening with only the gopro 7, my 6 and 5 work fine. Updated to new firmware, recommended sd card and all.

I've lost so many good clips.

It also sounds like the 7 has issues in low temperatures and the last update fixed some, but not all the issues. As I read the comments, it looks like we most have this issue in cold environment when the battery starting to freeze and everything in the camera gets kinda slow.

I'm not sure if I feel better or worse - this has been an issue at least with the Hero 6 Black.  Each support thread seems to devolve in to a loop of "use a different SD card" and "update the GoPro" however there has been no solution and hardly any acceptance that the issue actually exist from the team.

Hi @toughbluff65747,

It's really the main reason. Using slow SD cards or not recommended SD card. System glitch that can be fixed by manual firmware update.

But if issue persist them it would be best to get in touch with a customer support representative.

But most of the time after changing SD card and manual firmware update the problem no longer exist.
