Hello, I am using a Nflightcam Aviation Audio+Power Cable for GoPro Hero5 and Hero6 but I have not been able to capture any audio on any flights. Here is my configuration:
- Cessna 172
- FlightCom Noise Canceling headset
- Go Pro Hero 6
On my last two flights, one recording captured zero sound and the other flight recording captured just a couple of snips of sound. Video is perfect, no sound. In terms of a fault isolation procedure, all components seem to be have been tested independently:
- Aircraft audio system – this Cessna 172 is a flight school aircraft. Frequent successful Go Pro videos recorded in it with GoPro Hero 4 and 5.
- FlightCom Headset – has been used successfully with a GoPro Hero 4 and 5.
- Hero 6 – records audio when cable is not inserted so the unit itself and Sim card appear fine.
Based on the above, it appears that Hero 6, in the above configuration is the root cause of the fault or the unit itself is defective with an external microphone. Any thoughts or suggestions……?

I was finally able to fix my issue. My unit shipped on November 5. GoPro released a firmware update on November 20 - HERO6 Black v01.60 | November 20, 2017. Although the release notes do not say anything about fixing external microphone detection, once I installed the firmware update the camera began to detect the external mic. Good luck.

The only thing I could suggest is to ensure that the icon for an external microphone is displayed in upper left of screen on back. Before I upgraded the firmware, I also recorded some audio but it was very intermittent. On the ground it would capture ATIS and taxi fairly well but upon takeoff all I got was cabin noise. On my first flight after updating the firmware I noticed a bright red microphone icon that indicated the unit had detected the external microphone. Apparently the audio I had recorded on earlier flights was just the regular unit microphone. If you see the icon then it might be either a volume setting on the unit or the way you are connecting the Nflightcam cable.

I'm on the same firmware and tried recording on the ground with the aircraft battery only i.e. engine not on. I'm trying to rule out any obvious errors at this point.
