Hero5 Session Telemetry

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I know the Gauges are now usable within Quick for Desktop if you have a H5 Black, but David Newmann said on Twitter ( https://twitter.com/David_Newman/status/794364273757564928 ) that the Session also carries accelerometer and gyroscope data, which I have been unable to extract so far. I have even tried with Dashware (owned by GoPro as far as I know) and I get the message "this video file does not contain embedded data". Which is funny as stated in GoPro's support pages: "Is My Data Logger Supported? Yes. This may sound a overly confident but we have two things on our side. One, logger software and hardware vendors need their customers to be able to use the data they create in order to be valuable. Two, we have been doing this for over five years."

So, is there a way we can extract the sensor data recorded within the H5 Session? Ideally, a way that allows us to work with the data, not just display gauges.

Thank you.

Re: Hero5 Session Telemetry

I've put together the tools necessary to extract data from the Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Temperature and GPS (H5 BLack only) on both cameras, on all resolutions and framerates, and on all firmware versions (I believe). I haven't tried on the H5 Black, as I don't have one, but it should work. This is for Windows only.

Just uncompress the package and drop your video files on GPMD2CSV.bat

We'll be discussing what to do with the data in this group: https://community.gopro.com/t5/Hero5-Metadata-Visualisation/gp-p/Hero5MetadataVisualisation

Re: Hero5 Session Telemetry

Hello,

Only the Hero 5 Black has GPS. That is needed to do the gauges. The Session does not have GPS, therefore it cannot have gauges.

@maplepanda We are not trying to get gauges, but raw IMU data to work with. The camera records it but we cannot access it. Read the original post

Are you sure? That table clearly says the Session doesn't have GPS sensors.

Re: Hero5 Session Telemetry

So, just shedding some more light here. The software called RaceRender is probably going to decypher those data at some point, or so they said back in November: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1232250683505138&id=398013900262158&refid=52 (see comments). We don't know whether that will allow us to extract the raw data anyway.

There is also this guy on Twitter, who said he extracted and read the data, but won't share how to do it: https://twitter.com/stilldavid/status/801215959092568064

Another tool that might help us at some point is ExifTool, but no luck so far: http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/exiftool/forum/index.php?topic=7755.0

Re: Hero5 Session Telemetry

@maplepanda Yes. We are not looking for a GPS sensor, but the data from the accelerometer and the gyroscope, as stated in the original post. David Newman himself, Director of Software at GoPro confirmed the data is being recorded.

@kajuna Sorry, I didn't know who he is. I thought he was some random internet troll.

Ok. I'll take a look around. Could you try contacting support and asking them?
