Based on my experience, and research on the experience of others:
- etc, etc, etc
The Looping mode on my Gopro Hero Session 5 does NOT work the way I would expect and would want.
Here is how it should work ( thanks wesleyl80428 ):
Step 1: Set Default mode to Looping with whatever duration you choose. Only have to do this ONCE, hence the term DEFAULT!!!!
Step 2: Every time after that just press camera button, after which the camera powers on and begins filming in LOOPING mode
How it actually works ( thanks again wesleyl80428 ):
Step 1: Power on the camera.
Step 2: Cycle through the camera menu with the setting button to access WiFi-on selection.
Step 3: Turn on WiFi.
Step 4: Wait for the camera to create its WiFi network.
Step 5: Connect to said WiFi network from mobile device.
Step 6: Open the GoPro app.
Step 7: Wait for the camera to populate in the list of available cameras.
Step 8: Connect to the camera in the app, after which the camera will finally switch to "Default Mode" (e.g. Looping).Wave to all the other cars/bikes/runners who ahve already left you behind at this point....
In other words:
-I want ONE PRESS of a button to start looping!
-I don't want to mess with the bizzare hybrid bluetooth/wifi configuration needed to connect each time, I dont want to have to touch my phone at all for this;
-I want it to overwrite the oldest file on the card when it gets full and start again, not just oldest in current session, etc. Don't try to be cute and protect me from accidental deletion of a file, I fully understand what LOOOPING means.
So I undererstand what LOOPING means.
Other users understand what LOOPING means:
etc, etc, etc
So my questions are:
- Will GoPro be changing Looping feature in the near future to allow Looping as true default?
- Will GoPro enable Looping to truly overwrite oldest data on card, so recording NEVER stops due to SD Card Full?

I purchased this camera (instead of earlier models) for looping. Defaults are set, and I was really surprised to find that it runs out of space. Default is default. Looping is set. Why doesn't it loop?

I completely agree with you and am as frustrated as you sound to be... I hope GoPro is listening. This was my first and most likely my last GoPro purchase as the software seems to be very backwards thinking and with no logic at all. Looping should bust be looping... What the heck is with this retarded "chaptering" nonsense! And the process of connecting to your phone... OH MY GOD!!!! It's an action camera, but you'd miss all the action by the time you get connected to the **bleep** thing to enter the correct recording mode.

Chaptering is a feature that segments recordings into a new file chapter once a certain size is reached. Chapters are divided like this so in the event of a jolt or crash that causes a file to become corrupted, only a portion of your video will be effected and not the whole thing. This link provides more file chaptering information.

I think you should take another look at the manual/software. I think this has been fixed. I no longer need to connect to my iPhone. I simply press and release the record button to record in Looping mode. Ok, every now and again I need to format the SD due to the way they fill up but that's not really any trouble. I'd sooner this than possbily lose some footage with it over-writing. I think this is the reason behind the logic they have applied.
Anyway, as I said in my earleir post, I think GoPro have listened and changed this as it currently works ok for me.
