Hero 7 footage upside down when editing in Adobe Premiere CC
[ New ]Hero 7 Black, SW version 01.51
Editing in Adobre Premiere CC v7.2.1 (4) (older, but it's what I have)
Shooting in 2.7k/60/Wide
I shoot with the gopro upside down attached to the visor of my helmet, I always set to camera orientation to "down" (not auto). When I download the footage, VLC plays it right side up, however once I import the files into Premiere they are upside down. This worked perfectly fine with Hero 6 - I'm assuming the metadata (or something like that) has changed between the footage shot by Hero 6 and 7 and Premiere is now getting confused.
At this point, I can't really edit videos since I need to flip everything 180 degrees first and only then I can edit it (yes, I've already tried to flip the orientation of my secondary screen but that's really not a solution...)

Re: Hero 7 footage upside down when editing in Adobe Premiere CC
[ New ]hi all,
to me, it is a feature.
in short when upside down
- h7 will save it upside down with Metadata Rotation: 180.
- h6 will save it normal orientation, without Rotation Metadata, as if it was filmed normally
if the player/editing software is capable to read the metadata "Rotation: 180" and correct the orientation automatically, we are good to go.
if not, we are in the situation described.....
I'm sure every editing software have something related to the Metadata Rotation...can you check?
I made a test:
- video normal and upside down with h6 and h7
- all four are played with the right orientation by:
.... Windows Media Player
.... DivX player
.... Movies&TV - the default Win10 player
.... iPhone
.... edited iMovie, saved, etc....
in metadata, can be seen opened in DivX...menu File > Show Video Information > Extended data....look below Video section, Display aspect ratio...you will find or not Rotation.
in one case, h7 filmed upside down, there is a field Rotation: 180
not present in h6 filmed upside down, so indeed @phil314 is right, the video filmed upside down in h6, is saved "normal" (as it was upside up".
h6 - filmed normal, no Rotation Metadata
h6 filmed upside down, no Rotation Metadata
h7 filmed normal, no Rotation Metadata
h7 filmed upside down, Rotation: 180 Metadata

Hi @plawa
I am not certain as to why it's reading it differently.
Have you tried recording new files to test if the same happens?
You can also consult/check with Adobe.
Thanks!

Re: Hero 7 footage upside down when editing in Adobe Premiere CC
[ New ]Hello @aragon1006
Yes, I have tried several more videos with the camera in all combinations of settings (orientation on auto/locked etc) and it's still the same issue - footage shot with the camera upside down and set to "down" orientation shows up flipped in Premiere.
The only thing that changed in this workflow is the camera (6 to 7) so I would appreciate GoPro looking into it as this should be a quick SW fix.
Thanks!

Hi @plawa,
Please try to check other settings such as auto orientation.
Try to check on other software or other version of Adobe Premiere as well if you can.
Thanks,

Re: Hero 7 footage upside down when editing in Adobe Premiere CC
[ New ]@jayr3438 - see above, I have tried various combinations of settings (auto/up/down), the issue only appears both when the camera is set to auto and/or to down and it is upside down.
Here are the results of metadata comparison between Hero 7 and Hero 6:
Hero 7 - image is flipped
https://www.get-metadata.com/result/ee810f44-53bb-4e1f-9683-00b7d03b43f8
Hero 6 - works ok
https://www.get-metadata.com/result/0526f8a2-7c39-4b54-bc89-f3e5dd69aaf8
The difference seems to be only in the "Rotation" attribute which is set to 180 in the Hero 7 file - looks like this is what forces Premiere to flip the image.

Re: Hero 7 footage upside down when editing in Adobe Premiere CC
[ New ]Looks like those links expired... Basically it's the Rotation and Rotate attribute/tag set to 180 that messes things up.
I also noticed that VLC saves images from the video upside down (playback works OK).
Any reason to set this attribute? From what I can tell it does more harm than good...

Hi @plawa,
We don't have an update as of now.
We'll replicate the issue here in our end.
You may try to check if you know someone who owns the same camera if it will be replicated.
Regards,
-Jay
