Did you notice if there was a prompt on the camera about a thermal shut down?
For long recordings or if using an external power source, other users suggest removing the battery and letting the camera run off the external power source.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the reply @aragon1006! Unfortunately, I didn't see a thermal shutdown prompt or any other error/communication that might have helped me understand the issue. I was controlling the camera remotely via wifi and was only alerted to the possibility of a problem by noticing the iPhone app's refusal to re-connect to the GoPro's wifi network some time after the recording was initiated. It was my first time operating the camera remotely, and at the time I presumed/hoped it was a network communication issue. Sadly, it turned out to be something more significant.
Does the Hero 7 produce and record activity logs? I'll try removing the battery for the next long shoot, but I'd like to find out exactly what happened in this instance if at all possible.
