Hero 7 Black loosing some footage?

Hello group! I have been experiencing an issue and I am hoping someone here can help.

I have a musician who has been using 3 Hero 7 Black cameras to film our band rehearsals. I am running them for about 90 mins straight to capture the entire rehearsal using the UBS C cable into a power source as not to worry about battery life. The SD cards I am using are the SANDISK Extreme 128GB cards, (I will attach a photo of the exact card). I am also shooting in 4K

I went to dump all the footage onto my computer today and when opening the folder on the SD card I noticed that the footage was split up into 10 separate MP4 files all running about 8 min each, which is fine. However, only the first 5 files will open to show the video footage. The last 7 files don't show the video preview in the thumbnail and won't open at all. (I'll attach a photo so you can see). It's almost like the card stopped recording after about 40 min worth of footage but I know it didn't because I kept checking the cameras and they were definitely recording.

Not sure why this is happening. The total amount of footage on the card was less than half the card's capacity so I know the card did not fill up. So, basically, I lost about 45 mins of our performance and can't seem to retrieve those files.

anyone else ever experience this issue, especially when recording for long periods of time?

Thanks in advance for your help and guidance.

David

Re: Hero 7 Black loosing some footage?

Ok, looks like I may have found the solution. I always took the SD card out of the camera and inserted it directly into my computer to transfer the files and as I posted only the first 5 files could be transferred and opened. It occurred to me that maybe I should keep the card in the camera and plug in the camera via USB C and transfer them that way. As soon as I plugged the camera into the computer FCP X immediately recognised the camera and all the files and imported them and all the files seem to work.

So the key is to keep the SD card in the camera and plug the GP into the computer and that fixes the issue. If you take the card out of the camera and put it into a SD card reader, then into the computer the issue happens.

I hope this will help someone else if they experience the same issue as I did.

Re: Hero 7 Black loosing some footage?

Hello @davidv78363. Is the issue observed in all the HERO7 Black cameras that you have? Has this always been the case?

Are you able to play the full video on the camera? What about through other media players? There is a list of programs here https://gopro.com/help/articles/how_to/Programs-to-View-and-Edit-Videos that can be used to view and edit your GoPro footage. The SD card that you are using is among the recommended cards we're good with it. It is odd though for files to show up on the card and not be viewable.

If you haven't yet, try recording again but only after re-flashing camera firmware following instructions under Manual Update here,  and formatting the SD card.  Make sure you save your current recordings first prior to doing the suggested steps. Let us know how it goes. Thanks!

Re: Hero 7 Black loosing some footage?

so what it looks like the card got currupted, gopro can only repair the  card if it was not removed and turned on again it will pop up with a bandade and   repair wit ha header.

If thecard is counterfiet or not fully formatted its now best to do so then to continue to lose footage.  Firmware flashing isnot the  fix if asked but  what gopro forum mod wants you to do,  if it continues to do so then you have your answer.

Re: Hero 7 Black loosing some footage?

I am unable to get those files off the SD card and onto my computer so I can try another player to open them. I had this happen on 2 different cameras on the same video shoot. Yes, the same SD card type was used as in my original post. so I doubt that 2 cards in two cameras got corrupt at the same time during the same shoot. There is clearly an issue with the camera. Not sure what to do now. I can use 50% of the footage on each camera.

Re: Hero 7 Black loosing some footage?

I am now trying to import the footage using the Gopro Qlink application to see if that will work. however, I really need to be able to get the footage into FCP X for editing. I see there is a firmware update available for my camera so I will also do that update and see if that helps.

Well, the Gopro app does not import the files either. It says the files are corrupt but not to worry my files are safe to try again please....lol. Well now I know that these cameras are not the most reliable in the world and I may have to find a different solution.
