Hero 7 Black Battery Life in cold weather

My Gopro Hero 7 black goes auto off after only 30s of video during skiing in cold weather. I use an aproved sd card and 2.7k 60 Superview Hypersmooth. I use 4 diferents batteries full of charge and the same occur.

Thanks for your support

Re: Hero 7 Black Battery Life in cold weather

In cold weather it's best to have the camera in a housing to trap some of the heat so the battery doesn't deplete too quickly.  The Super Suit is usually the best option, but the silicone sleeve can help.  I've also seen some other users post hand knitted covers.

Where you using Quick Capture or did you have the camera powered on the entire time?  Keeping the camera on can also assist in keeping the battery warm.

Always keep you spare batteries close to your body (inside pocket).  Use of hand warmer packets can also help.

If you are using the Super Suit, an anti-fog insert or two is also recommended to make sure you don't get fogging on the lens.

Re: Hero 7 Black Battery Life in cold weather

Hello @alexcarballo . As with all lithium-ion batteries, your GoPro's internal battery operates most effectively at moderate temperatures; cold weather leads to a decrease in overall battery life. Image Stabilization in high performance modes draws a lot of power. In cold temperatures the battery is not able to keep up. Because of this, HyperSmooth and Standard Stabilization are not available in the following high performance modes when operating in very cold temperatures (0°C or lower).

  • 2.7K 4:3 - 60/50
  • 4K 60/50
  • 4K 4:3 - 24

In addition to Daniel's suggestions, here are a few tips that should maximize the battery's performance in low temperatures. It's important to note that cold-performance is relative; you may find that using one of the tips below does the trick, or you may need to experiment with combinations that suit your activity.

  • Keep the camera and battery warm before/during use (stow it in an interior pocket).
  • Leaving the camera on, in standby may be beneficial, as powering the camera off for an extended period of time will allow the camera's temperature to drop.
  • Minimize the use of resolutions/frame rate combinations higher than 1080p30, unless necessary. If you're not looking to take advantage of higher resolutions, or slow down your video while editing, 1080p30 is a great high-definition, energy efficient recording setting.
  • Minimize the use of Wi-Fi. It requires quite a bit of battery power to retain the video feed and control the camera; even more so in low temperatures.

Hope this helps.

Re: Hero 7 Black Battery Life in cold weather

So, as for your suggestion, I bought a super cool Gopro Hero 7 Black that can manage 4K 60 with amazing Hypersmooth stabilization but I have to film in 1080p30????? WTF!!!!

I primary use my gopros for winter sports so your tips are not a solution

I also had a Gopro Hero 6 Black, Hero 5 Session, Hero 5 Black... and I didn't have this issues in cold weather.

And I normally film in 2.7K 60 16:9 that is not in your list

Re: Hero 7 Black Battery Life in cold weather

1080p/30fps is recommended because it draws the least amount of power and will therefore give a longer recording time. You can use other resolutions/frame rates, but by adapting to the environment, you're more likely to not run out of juice and miss a shot.

HEVC recording modes are where you will run into the most issues in cold weather. 2.7K/60fps 16:9 is not HEVC unless you specify the camera to only record in this format.

Keeping the battery & camera warm is key. When not in use, take steps to keep them warm (or at least not exposed to freezing temperatures). When in use, you want to use a case or sleeve and keep the camera powered on (do not use Quick Capture). To maximize the recording time, turn off features you don't need (Voice Control, GPS, Connections, Quick Capture). You can use these, but they will contribute to a faster draining battery.

Other settings that might have some impact:
Set the orientation to UP (or down if you have the camera mounted upside down), Audio on Wind Reduction or Stereo Only, LCD brightness turned down, RAW (Protune Audio off), and Protune Off.

Again, you don't have to turn these off, but it might help extend the battery power.

Re: Hero 7 Black Battery Life in cold weather

But Gopro not advise in the commercials and ads that the top resolutions & hypersmooth are not allow for cold weather. Bad, very bad! Summary is that for cold weather we can't use 4K60 with hypersmooth :-(

Re: Hero 7 Black Battery Life in cold weather

Summary is, you can use any resolution/frame rate and any setting. However, you need to take steps to ensure the battery doesn't get too cold. If you are unable to do so, then you might consider using different settings to maximize recording time available to you.

This is not correct.
Gopro admit that:
HyperSmooth and Standard Stabilization are not available in the following high performance modes when operating in very cold temperatures (0°C or lower).
2.7K 4:3 - 60/50
4K 60/50
