Hero 6 not recording using external power

I’m using a Hero 6 in a light aircraft with a 3.5mm GoPro Adaptor (so I can record cockpit audio) / Lexar 1000X 128G MicroSDXC UHS-II Card / various USB power packs (doesn't seem to make any difference which one)

The camera always works fine as a stand alone unit.  The camera operates fine when connected directly to any of my USB power packs ie not using the 3.5mm adaptor.  The 3.5mm adaptor works fine with the camera when just used to record line level signals.  And when you charge the camera from any external power pack either through the 3.5mm adaptor or directly it seems to charge as it should.  That said I get a green battery logo when charging direcly from a power pack (ie not through the adaptor) - no green battery when charging through the adaptor just a lightning sign in the battery.

But when you try to put the camera into record whilst charging / connected to an external power source thorough the 3.5mm adaptor (I appreciate the Hero 6 won't charge whilst recording using external power) the camera beeps as if it’s going into record.  The red record dot appears at the top of the screen and then the screen either just goes black and there’s a further few beeps / the camera refuses to record.  Or the camera goes into record for a few seconds and then drops out / screen goes black and there’s allegedly an error with the file that it tries to repair.  When this happens if your using the camera inverted it also doesn't know whcih way up it is.

After any of the above issues if you then pull the external power the camera repeatedly goes into record fine every time never seeming to need to repair files etc.

Any thoughts?  Is this a Hero 6 firmware issue or an issue with my 3.5mm adaptor ???

Re: Hero 6 not recording using external power

I think I've sorted it ....  The USBC to Regular style USB cable I was using for charging isn't fit for the job, despite working fine on everything else I've used it with.

Things I've discovered...

You can only fast charge (green battery icon) connecting directly from the external power pack to the camera.  When you charge though the GoPro 3.5mm adaptor, fast charging is unavailable.  Although I have to say charging times for both connection methods seem the same...!!!

To record whilst powering the camera though the 3.5mm adaptor or directly, you need a high quality (sufficient current capacity) USBC to USB charge cable.  I bought a 6ft Belkin thingy which fixes my issues.

Interestingly whether powered directly or though the 3.5mm adaptor, the camera always opts to use external power when present over the internal battery, even whilst in record.  ie the camera will continue recording pulling external power and re attaching it, without stopping or generally freaking out.

Re: Hero 6 not recording using external power

First thing first: the green battery indicates fast charging.

Are you charging the camera through the 3.5 mm jack? If so, which port does that adaptor plug into. ( I can't remember off the top of my head). I think you should open a Support case and ask there. Can anybody else help with this question as it is a fairly interesting one. @danielr15

Re: Hero 6 not recording using external power

There's a-lot of variables going on, so the way I sorted it out was by a process of elimination.

Start by resetting your camera / make sure you have the latest firmware.

Remove your sim card, carefully clean it with Isopropyl alcohol or switch cleaner - most GoPro Issues would seem to be Sim Card related and/or the connection to it. Re-Install the sim. Re-format your sim card.

Connect the camera to a wall driven USB charger or at least a high power output charger ( e.g iPad charger) using the USB lead that came with the camera.  Start recording and see what happens.  The battery light should be green and show charging.  The internal battery should charge or at least drain a-lot slower than if it were not charging.

If that doesn't work or the camera switches off and won't record, then try another lead / or charger until it does.

If it's fine, try different leads with the same charger etc.  When you have a combination that works, try that lead in your car.  If it doesn't work I would suspect it's your cars USB output.

Little steps.  For me it was a dodgy USB cable.  But since writing my initial answer I've also had a couple of issues with the camera just stopping recording randomly - cleaning the sim sorted it.  You could have a dodgy Sim.  Check it's compatable?
