I'm not sure there is anything wrong with your camera. The cameras do get warm/hot with use. It's a sealed camera with intense processing going on inside. The camera will automatically turn itself off if it is getting to hot.
How deep where you in the water? While the camera is waterproof to 33feet (10 meters) the pressure at lower depths can press on the buttons and make them unusable. For anything beyond regular snorkeling or pool use, it's best to use the Super Suit.
What SD card are you using (make/model/size)? The only tested and recommended SD cards for the Hero6 Black are the SanDisk Extreme v30, Extreme Plus v30, and Extreme Pro v30 (note, it should have v30 printed on the card) 32GB-128GB. Freezing, overheating, and corrupt files can occur with lower rated or untested cards.
Finally, are you on the latest firmware update? If you are having issues, it's always a good idea to run a MANUAL update with your computer even if you are on the latest firmware. https://gopro.com/update/hero6
