Hero 6 Looks terrible in low light compared to Hero 5?

[ New ]

I have used my Hero 5 for thousands of hours of footage this past year inside conventions and for my youtube channel.  I like the picture of the Hero 5, my content looks decent when I am in my filming room.  I got the Hero 6 today and everything I would normally film looks super pixelated and terrible?  Is this normal for lower light situations?  I thought this was markted as being better in low light, that is one reason I went out and purchased it.  I returned the first Hero 6 because I thought it was flawed but the second one is just as terrible.  Is this common for lower light situations?  I might return the second camera.  I am kinda upset about this, I feel like I wasted my time and money on the 6.

@noblecreek650

As in your previous thread, I wanted to take the time to thank you for the feedback and provide some reassurance in this thread as well. We are actively working toward resolving this issue, and look forward to releasing a camera update in the November timeframe to address this concern.

As gopr releases camera's they always improve, improve, improve.  sound, lower light better lenses.

Do you have any samples to show?

its an a camera with addedfeatures, ask yourself if you need more frame rates, an newerchip,  dedicated color schem e.  Maybe firmware  can fix it , like the promises for the Hero 5 was made, we're still hoping for firmware fixes.. good luck

Yes I wanted improvements in low light since I do a lot of booth tours at comic con etc and alot of times the light is kinda bad so its gets a tiny bit grainy on the 5 but it seems the 6 now gets really grainy in medium light.  Here is a toy shelf tour with the 5 and the 6 light is bad so I expect it to be a bit grainy and dark but the 6 is so much worse its complete full of grain and artifacts.

I tried to set both at the same setting.

To me the 6 is so much more pixelated and full of artifacts it looks terrible.

This is how my filming room look swith the 5

This is the same room wearing the same shirt with the 6

This one is so full of artifacts expecially on my shirt.

I only watched the two toy shelf videos, but it looks like the H6 was recording with a higher shutter speed (no motion blur when you're moving the cam) than the H5 (clearly more blur when moving the cam). are you sure both were using the same settings? a higher shutter speed will have the camera use higher ISO values, so that could explain why there's more noise visible in the H6 video.

Ok so those videos were on auto shutter speed.  I had tried 120 earlier since that is usually the best for 60 fps on other cameras but it was no help.  I also droped the frame rate to 24 fps since that usually helps with low light and that just made it more pixelated but brighter.

So here is the videos at 1/60 shutter speed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK7huUQoyFE

Still pretty artifact laden

I thought maybe the new zoom feature would fix it so here is 1/60 shutter speed zoomed in fully

Yikes

And why not 1/240 shutter speed, max iso is 800 so its kinda dark but you can still see the artifacts and pixels

and then 1/240 pushing max iso up to 1600 which I know makes it more pixelated but at least brights up the blobs of artifacts.

Oh and I think they lack of motion blur is because of the improved stabilization so its more stable but looks terrible to me.  I have the karma grip to help with that though on the 5.

Hi

I've exactly the same issue and I'm also very disappointed.

Did you find a solution finally ?

Did you received a new one or is there a new firmware update that has been fixed that issue.

I really don't know what to do acutally.

Thanks in advance.
