REVIEW (thus far) - Since I really razed on the Hero 4 and 5 units, that I purhcased and returned due to not being able to resolve the infamous black screen of death or SD card issues, I wanted to give a postive review where it's due.
HERO 6 BLACK - I have been using the Hero 6 for almost a year and right out of the box it worked fine, I've never updated it, and I've used the same cards as I did in the 5's that I sent back with issues. The Hero 6 has worked fine for me from day one. I have used it in video productions with two DSLR's from Canon. It took some getting used to to grade the footage from the three different cameras but all-in-all, I'm pleased the 6 and may actually plug it into the app and let it update. I hope updating doesn't brick the 6. My only complaint, BATTERY LIFE is terrible while only recording 1080 30 or 60.
HERO 7 BLACK - I've been so pleased with 6 that I purchased the 7 only this time I followed the recomendations of @danielr15 and upon powering up, connected to the GoPro app (via iphone 7), updated the app, and then used the SD card several times and deleted several movies to make sure it worked before reformatting the card. Therein, thus far success.
6 vs 7 - the 7 has better image stabilzation, better in low light, better sound quality, better screen operation, defintely has better color, and fits in the 6 enclosure. Plan to update the 6 even though I'm worried. I know I should have faith but I had a rough go of it with the 4 and 5's and perhaps living in the aftermath of shell shock.
In all, I'm happy with my GoPro's and will be using them in unison as cameras 3 and 4 and in piggy back or consecutive recording; that is, will have the cameras side-by-side and begin recording on the 7 using the wrist remote, then when I reach near end-of-life of the 7's battery, launch the 6 and beging recording, shutting down the 7 before it collapses.
Hope this post helps some who also have had issues and know that GoPro has apparently resolved the hardware/software issues that plauged some of the 4 and 5 models and while some have had no problems, for those of us who have, the Hero 6 and Hero 7 are a welcomed investment. Thanks GoPro.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience @drdimento
This will surely help out others!
You are welcome. I've needed these cams for years and now fortunately they seem to be working seemlessly. I hope to be able to help others. I believe in part is the the hierarchy of the updating process that wrecks the software. Getting the unit "adjusted" from the start before beginning to do anything certainly has to help the unit function as it was intended and errors in the software learned and fixed.
