Hero 5 over exposure snow

Hi all, I struggled to rein in the exposure on my Hero 5 yesterday. It was fine until we hit the snow line and the exposure just blew out. My settings were

Resolution 1080 25FPS

ProTune on

Max Iso 400

Shutter speed Auto.

EV Comp 0

WB 4000k

I'm not too sure about extracting metadata from the MP4 but I dropped the file on TailorandWayne.com and it seems to indicate that the footage of the clip was Iso 100 Shutter speed 1/50 (0.02s).

The day wasn't bright at all as the sun wasn't out and it was extremely foggy (see gopro pic below) The camera settings for the still was ISO 100

shutter 1/500

Exposure bias 0

Max aperture 2.97

focal length 3mm

I've had this problem on sunny days before and bought a polarising filter for that but didn't bring it since it was such an overcast day.

Do I need ND filters to sort this out or just keep pushing up the shutter speed, or maybe just go to exposure comp?

Re: Hero 5 over exposure snow

Even though it was overcast snow reflects a lot of light so yes, you should use an ND filter to reduce the amount of light and stop the over exposure (I find that it's easier to pull details out of the shadows than a blown out highlight).

Polarising filters help reduce glare, useful if you want to video shiny surfaces such as water or glass. Depending on the orientation of the polarising filter you can either look through the water or catch reflections off the surface.

Re: Hero 5 over exposure snow

P. S. you can manually set the ISO to 100 and the shutter to something faster than 1/50th which will reduce the amount of light but this will also reduce the amount of motion blur making any action look crisper than your current settings.

Re: Hero 5 over exposure snow

Hey Jay-ell thanks for that. I do have a polaroid filter but didn't think I'd need it. I will check out the ND filters but in my mind they will only help me pull down the shutter speed. In this case, the GoPro selected ISO 100 and with Shutter in Auto it filmed in 1/50. I can't understand why the shutter speed didn't ramp up much higher. Why didn't it go to 1/100 or 1/200 or faster?

Is it somehow due to filming in 1080? Maybe I should film in 2.7k.

My iPhone seemed to cope way better than the GoPro. It seemed to capture the dull conditions (like the GoPro still image)
