I bought a Hero 5 for black Friday. Out of the box, I went to plug it in, left it alone, and when I came back a couple hours later the charging indicator was not on. No charge whatsoever. When I plug it in, the red indicator light comes on for probably a second, maybe less, and then turns off abruptly. I had no SD card in it, as I was waiting for it to come in the mail.
It ONLY works if I don't have the battery in it and it's plugged in. I have tried every trick I can find on the internet: charging with no SD, putting battery in after it's plugged in, holding shutter, different ports (two different surge strips, two different phone USBs, Laptop).
I tried the manual update and the wireless update but it needs to be charged for them to work (as far as I can tell) so I can't do that.
Bought through Target, recieved in the mail. Is my only option to either send it back or get it exchanged? I understand having bugs and needing updates but I'm really disappointed that I can't get it to work.

Looks like I'm in a similar situation. I've used my Hero 5 black maybe 5 or 6 times over the last several months for a total of about 15 hrs of recording. Yesterday it just stopped functioning. Will not turn on, will not reset, nada. I've tried different batteries (genuine GoPro batteries) - made sure they were charged with an external GoPro charger. Tried the reset procedure, tried external power...
While the video from the Hero 5 is great, and the audio so-so, planning on getting an external mic for some moto vlogging... I have to say, honestly I am not impressed with the reliability so far. This is actually my 2nd Hero 5. The first one was dead out of the box and had to be returned/exchanged. I bought it through Best Buy and fortunately got an extended warranty on it because it looks like this one is defective too. I'm at the point where it may be time to start shopping around for alternative cameras...
