Re: Hero 5 Black sd error

I bought a new GoPro Hero5 Black for Christmas and after much research a Sandisk MicroSD Extreme 64gb XCI V30 C10 U3. Immediate SD error on camera power on. I tried formatting the card in the camera and on my mac with no success. I tried multiple different power on and format combinations as per this forum with no success. I was unable to update the firmware without a working SD card. I returned the card after Christmas and purchased a Samsung Pro+ 64gb MicroSD card. This worked immediately and I have had no further issues. I have also now performed firmware update.

Warning to other readers - the Sandisk extreme card and GoPro are currently NOT compatible. They need to sort this out ASAP as it is a significant cause of frustration.

Re: Hero 5 Black sd error

I'm sorry you had to go through that but I'm glad you've got it sorted out. Samsung Pro and Lexar seem to be the way to go. I've had a couple issues with Lexar over the years and never one issue with Samsung. I still recommend the Lexar as they are cheaper and give nearly 100% good performance. SanDisk are NOT a good combination with GoPro. If not for a board member of GoPro also sitting as a board member of SanDisk, I think GoPro might decide to officially label these cards as non-compatible. It might just be anecdotal evidence against SanDisk cards, but enough is enough. GoPro, please stop selling SanDisk cards and please at least put out a statement saying that there appears to be an issue and that people should be aware of this prior to purchasing/using SanDisk cards. There is just too much legal BS in this country. I'm sure there is concern that Sandisk could then sure for defamation and damages. As a happy and satisfied customer I am sad for so many frustrated users. I swear, I think Xiaomi and DJI are sabotaging GoPro. And to have all the servers go down the day after Christmas? Something is up.

Re: Hero 5 Black sd error

So Daniel, Could you please do a step by step tutorial on the best way to fix this issue. I have just spent all day reading these 32 pages of post. What in your opinion is the best way to solve this. I am using a Kingston Micro 16 GB card. At the moment i am doing a long format of the card on a PC using windows 10. What would be my next step???

Thanks for all your help

Re: Hero 5 Black sd error

I had the same issues with san disk extreme 64b V30

With the Lexar 1000x 32GB, everything's ok.

First time Go Pro/ Camera owner here... let me describe my experience... i buy the camera after thanksgiving in anticipation of my Christmas trip to Utah. I get the camera along with a bunch of accessories, 2 batteries, and of course the Scan Disk Ultra Plus 128gb card... as soon as I get it out of the box I take it on a walk and shoot 4K, 1080p, stabilization on & off. About 2hrs of footage in clips ranging 2min-40min... no problems.... . .

Reading through some of these posts... if I have the wrong SD card why did it shoot fine in November but not December? Did I miss an update? And if GoPros solution is "go spend more money and buy more parts" ... I will be bad mouthing this company on every platform I can possibly find. . . .

The key point here that @Anonymous makes is that the GoPro Hero 5 worked fine then had an issue.  How is this possible that the SD card is the issue?  Especially, when numerous folks have posted over and over that other cards also have had SD Card Errors?

Re: Hero 5 Black sd error

@Anonymous I doubt the card is the screen issue.  Mine had this same thing and also shut off regularly on its' own.  After the update, my camera would not film anything over 10-20 seconds and stopped recording with a message on the screen "SD Card Error" or the screen went green, that is if it didn't just shut off automatically.  You might want to consider doing what many of us have done, return them; although, a friend of mine in Pittsburgh, returned his, went to a different store to purchase, and the same thing happened with the replacement camera using a Kingston card.  After being recommended to change the card to a Lexar, he did so and it immediately gave an SD Card Error.  It isn't a card issue, just some Hero 5's that have a serious problem perhaps with the chipset inside the unit or the SD Card contacts or board connecting the card.

If it is an inherent issue with the GoPro Hero5 cameras, why do I have two Hero5 Blacks that work fine with a Samsung Pro SD card and a Hero5 Session that also works fine.  However, when I tried the SanDisk, I got issues.  I'm not saying that every issue is 100% SD card related, but I do know that 100% of the Hero5 cameras are not defective. . . .

I think it's clear that it is not an issue with "all" GoPro Hero 5 cameas, just some, a batch, several batches, or runs of them.  It's apparent that many people are having issues and the issues are not confined to SanDisk cards but more often SanDisk and more than likely because 1) GoPro recommends that card and people are thus buying them; 2) more people buy SanDisk cards than any other card in the market because of SanDisk's long proven track record of reliability; and, 3) becuase other cards are having issues are also having issues and they go beyond just SD Card Errors, but including automatic shut downs, green screens, masked screens, etc.  These latter issues are not a SanDisk card error but some internal issue that isn't getting resolved from tech calls, forum posts, or by other means 90+% of the time other than simply returning the unit and purchasing another one that is hopefully not a bad one.

Let's admit that this is a serious issue and while it's obvious you love GoPro, I too have loved the brand, but have serious concerns about the reliablity of this newest model.  Our testing begins on another model on Friday while we continue to wait to hear from GoPro on their resolution of the Hero 5 as I and others would love to have GoPro branding in our arsenal of hardware but not until the product is reliable which at present it is not for some and/or serious concerns that the product may enter some SD Card Error mode 6 or 12 months down the road which is why I recommend an immediate return of these defective units in the hopes of purchasing a non-defective one.
