Hero 5 Black - Revisited --> Flickering video effect

Hi, My new Hero+ videos are flickering a lot of time. As if the camera is having a hard time with the background light level. I tried NTSC and PAL, low and high resolutions. But nothing helps. I would appreciate any help from the community. Thanks all. Tommy

Is it at all possible for you to test a higher end card?  Unfortunately the Evo and Evo+ cards are not very well suited for a GoPro camera as the write speed is on the lower end.  The read speed is good and Samsung makes great durable cards, however it's the write speed that matters for cameras and the Evo is not well suited for this.  I'm not saying that the issue is your SD card, but it is hard to trouble shoot and get over this as a possibility.  I personally use Samsung Pro/Pro Plus, and Lexar 1000x cards. You can probably use a Lexar 633x to save you some money, but if you can borrow or have a card from this list, please try it. https://gopro.com/help/articles/Block/microSD-Card-Considerations

If you can or cannot get a new card, you will want to run a manual update (even if you are on the current firmware)

If you have a brand new, never used SD card skip to 2

  1. Using a USB or SD adaptor, insert your SD card in your computer and format your card exFAT with the name blank
  2. Download the Manual Update "Update your camera manually" at bottom of page
    1. Hero+ Update: https://gopro.com/update/heroplus
  3. Plug your camera into a power source and let it charge completely.  While it's carging...
  4. Extract the Update folder from the downloaded Update.zip onto your desktop
    1. you should have a folder named Update with files inside when you are done
  5. Place the Update folder (Not Update.zip) onto the SD card
  6. Eject the SD card (on windows right click the SD drive and select eject)
  7. Insert the SD card in your camera and turn the camera on
  8. Allow the update to complete. The camera will turn off and on during installation so don't mess with it until it's done
  9. Go to camera settings and choose delete all/format
  10. Take two pictures and two test videos

If you are still getting the flicker, contact the GoPro support team https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus . Be sure to include as many details as possible including your SD card, firmware version, and steps you have taken.  It's also good to provide them with the link to the video.

Best of luck,

Daniel

Re: Hero 5 Black - Revisited --> Flickering video effect

What kind of light source is causing the flicker?  Is it full sunlight or florescent lighting?  If it's florescent, there is not a whole lot you can do about it except add more natural or incandescent lighting.

Can you post a link to a video?

Re: Hero 5 Black - Revisited --> Flickering video effect

The flickering happens with natural light. Here's an example video from Hero+

https://youtu.be/tc_xmJWuAf8

I see this happens also when shooting under water.

Thank you for your help!

Re: Hero 5 Black - Revisited --> Flickering video effect

Thanks for posting the video. It appears that the camera is getting confused metering the light. It's possible that this might be fixed with a manual update. If not, it might be hardware (sensor). As soon as I get to my computer I'll post some links and steps you can try.

What SD card are you using (make/model/size)?

Hi probably a long shot but have you set the shutter speed to anything other than auto? In video mode obviously such as 1/25 1/50 etc etc?

Re: Hero 5 Black - Revisited --> Flickering video effect

@epicallyepic

That is good advice and something to consider when using the Hero4 or Hero5 cameras.  In @tcon41w87 case, I think the camera is a Hero+ which doesn't have that feature.
