I have the same problem. The screen worked for about 30 mins then a competely blank screen. It appears to be backlit but no touch response or menu options. Everything I've read indicates the firmware updates are a waste of time. Nothing in the camera's documentation to tell me I needed a specific micro SD.
I never register into these forums but I've done so this time to vent my extreme frustration at the quality of this product. GoPro deserves the gold star for diminishing the quality of their brand in favour of profits with a cheaply built shoddy piece of garbage. It's sitting next to me switched off and beeps for no reason. I guess if the screen worked I might know what it's doing.
Yeah, total focus now on getting my money back. Why risk getting a replacement only to have that fail also. The price is way too expensive for something that breaks as soon as you take it out of the box.

I really can't understand why the support team keep saying to everyone that have this problem to update the fu**** firmware if it not help nobody at all ?
Why do not they assume that the product has a problem and needs a recall or create a NEW firmware that really fix this problem? I replace mine for a new one and I'm afraid to use it again.
I don't know if the problem is with a specific brand of sd card, or if is because I use in water (its "water proof"), or something like that... I really don't know what to do...

We suggest a manual update because it can help in cases where the last update did not install completely. If doing a manual update does not resolve the issue for you, please follow the other instructions we've posted here and contact our Support team at https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus so we can work through the issue with you.

I also have the same problem. Contacted support and was told to try a manual software update with a recommended SD card ... which is slightly frustrating as I have performed an update with my sandisk extreme 128gb and still have the same problem. So now I will have to go and buy another sd card, which I doubt will fix the problem! Seems like this is a big problem with the Hero 5?

Had same issue. Shipped the camera back to amazon and waiting for replacement. 50/50 shot i will keep it given how terrible first impression with the Company, support, and product is. Glad I bought it from Amazon who has incredible customer service and even their own technical support people who helped me try to fix the issue before accepting the return and shipping a replacement.
