Hero 4 Silver smart remote and app disconnecting

I've had a hero 4 silver for a few years now that originally came with an older remote that I updated to the smart remote about a year ago. I use the camera to film my daughters softball games and have noticed that the camera continually disconnects and reconnects to the smart remote and app. I generally use the remote but will check the video with the app occasionally a few times throughout the game. I know you can't use the two simultaneously together but I noticed that it does it to both of them arbitrarily. Most of the time I'm within about 10-12 feet from the camera so I'm just curious if there are some things I can try to help. Is it interference or is the app running in the background on my phone causing the remote to lose connection?

 

The camera, app, and remote are running the latest software/firmware version.

Both the Smart Remote and GoPro App use Wi-Fi connection to connect to your HERO4 Silver camera. The camera can only be controlled by one device at a time.

 

If using GoPro App, the camera will stay connected to the app as long as it is powered on and your mobile device's Wi-Fi is enabled.

 

If using Smart Remote, when your camera gets disconnected from the remote, the connection will time out after an extended period of time to conserve battery.

 

I think what could be happening is that your mobile device detects your HERO4 Silver camera's Wi-Fi around and automatically connects to it even if the camera is already connected to the remote.

 

What I can suggest is, you can turn off your mobile device's Wi-Fi after using the GoPro App to check your video. This way, your camera will stay connect to the remote unless you manually turn off or disconnect any of the devices.

So we had our first game and it seemed to help if I kept my phone in airplane mode. Does it always use wifi or can it switch back and forth between bluetooth and wifi?

Sorry but I forgot to mention that I still only get connection within about 20-30 feet outside, beyond that and it disconnects. The material on it says 600 feet but even if I got 100 feet I'd be happy. Any reason why it would be so short or anything else I can do. It says the version is 1.1.0

Thanks for the update, @noalp276. Bluetooth connectivity is not a feature on any GoPro cameras. Both the Smart Remote and GoPro App use Wi-Fi connection to connect to the camera.

 

If the connection drops at a certain range, it can be because either the camera's Wi-Fi is getting blocked or it is eventually dropping. Have you tested this while in an open field, no visible Wi-Fi signal obstructions (e.g. concrete/brick wall, ceramic, water, metal, and mirrors) between the camera and the remote?

 

If there are no obstacles that can possibly cause the connection issue, you can try re-flashing the camera's firmware to help correct any errors with the current software installation. Follow the manual update instructions specified on this article: Software Update Instructions for HERO4
