opened a support case for this but the initial feedback that this was not a bug but "by design".
I´m disputing this currently as it makes the camera unusable in many use cased (on permanent power but not accassible places) - and the Gopro 5 does not behave like this ...
Still hoping this gets fixed ...

Unfortunately support does not come back to me anymore - looks like they are not willing to fix this issue, but claim it is "by design" (which is not the case for the newer GoPros) and not a logical design decision as there is no use case that would take advantage of that bug.
Unfortunately I found also the Wifi for Gopro Hero 5 to be fairly unreliable when the camera is connected to constant power - I had cases where I could not connect to it anymore via mobile app until I manually turned the camera on/off.
In general there seems to be room for improvement in Wifi stability of GoPros - not sure this is still the case with the latest models, but I feel tempted to look at some alternatives for my 3 GoPros.

While the older cameras behave as you observed, later models including HERO5 Session, HERO5 Black, HERO6 Black, HERO (2018) , and the HERO7 cameras work in such a way that the Wi-Fi does not turn off even when the camera is plugged in to a power source. I hope this answers your question.

thanks for your feedback - you are confirming what I have experienced and detailed already - but you are not giving me a reason for this strange behaviour of GoPro 4.
From my point of view this still is a bug in firmware and I see no reason why this should not be able to be fixed and align the good behaviour of GoPro4 to the other models.

While we do not have a specific explanation as to why it behaves this way, we have sent this to the team in charge.
Please continue to check our website if this will be included in the next updates.

thank you for your support - let´s hope, although I´m not too optimistic that there will be fixes for GoPro4 still.
