Hero 4 Black overheating

I was recently gifted a lightly used GoPro Hero 4 Black but after a few test runs with it, I noticed that it has an overheating issue.

When housed inside the waterproof housing, it will shut down automatically after only 35 ~ 40min of recording time at 1080p resolution.

Curious, I charged it back up to full and took it out of the case and attempted to run it in an airconditioned room of 20C ambient on the desk in front of me to see if how it would fare outside of the case. Unfortunately, it shut down at about the 50min mark.

Is this kind of behaviour normal for the Hero 4?

Before anyone asks, I am indeed recording to a recommended SD card by Sandisk, specifically their newer Sandisk Extreme V30 32gb ones.

This camera is also no longer covered under warranty.

Thanks!
