hi all,

stabilization tests:

2.7k50fps superview in da office, half of the neon on, so not a great light....

1. EIS off, shaking

https://youtu.be/WuhEvN11RU8

just to have a reference for 2.

2. EIS on, same shaking

https://youtu.be/tewCt36_Vzg

comment: I think in the old version, this shaking would have been completely still to one point...if the shake goes beyond 10% of the image, the image would have been jumping...

3. EIS on, rotating with the chair

https://youtu.be/AddK0I9WMjQ

comment: no jelly effects, in the old firmware, would have been artefacts, jumps...

conclusion so far:

I'm very pleased with the new stabilization, Is more natural!

I'm waiting for the black ice to be gone in the mornings, to ride my bike, h6 mounted on my backpack strap...till now I was not able to use stabilization in this case...we will see...

robert.

gopro hero6 02.01 - 2.7k50fps - EIS shaking
gopro hero6 02.01 - 2.7k50fps - no EIS - shaking

low light test

2.7K 25fps  EIS off

1. PT off

https://youtu.be/H0bNSkQy3ZQ

2. PT on, ISO 800

https://youtu.be/Z7N_wZWwezE

3. PT on, ISO 1600

https://youtu.be/LFA0ltkhGZ8

the best result remains, too me, as I always have used in low lights, PT on ISO 800.

PT off and PT on ISO 1600 are almost the same results.

I'm pretty much sure, in old firmware, PT off was worst than PT on ISO 1600...

PT off looks usable too me!

here I'm happy also...maybe I will be able to use PT off as dashboard during night ...

just me,

robert

There appears to be a bug with the separately recorded audio track in firmware 2.1.

The WAVE files are just recorded as silence. Bummer.

[ New ]

i just bought my gopro a few weeks ago and just updated to this latest firmware. My video has been jerky and has this Fast Forwarding effect during playback. My video recording settings are 1440 @60fps wide with pro tune on. I usually use the quick record button on top of the camera to record video. The previous firmware version playback was very choppy. Ive been really disappointed with my Hero6 and considering returning it.

What are you using for a SD card?

What are you using to play back the videos?

Can you upload an original, unedited, video to youtube and then post your example here.

In PT on what was the color profile selected? Flat or GoPro?

Thanks

hi!

PT on, from default values I modified only ISO max 800 (from 1600), nothing more.

so

color=GoPro

sharp-High

WB=auto

ev comp = 0

shutter= auto

I remember that color=FLAT and Wb=native gave me  less noise in the darker areas in the old firmware.

testing is everything...Smiley Happy

Re: HERO6 Black Update! v02.01

Hey everyone,

I'm relatively new to the GoPro Community. I shot some tests of the GoPro Hero 6 using v2.01. I am happy with the daytime footage and stabilization. At nightime I think the colors and image quality are good but I am not a fan of the stabilization, however I have not shot much footage at night before. I think I should try 30fps at night, any other tips to help with nightime shooting? Anyone able to get great results at night?

Hi, you could improve Night time footage using protune ad set 1/120sec exposure .. stabilization will work better without blurred frames

Re: HERO6 Black Update! v02.01

[ New ]
While the Hero6 may receive some gyroscope assistance in stabilizing footage, EIS generally monitors the scene itself and relies on areas of the scene to act as markers for framing stability. For this reason, utilizing EIS in low light is not recommended as it's difficult for the camera to identify those markers.

With this latest update, it now appears that the Hero6 does this automatically for you as to not produce the jerky jumps that were present previously. Instead of having to remember to turn off stabilization when going into low light, the camera makes the adjustment. Of course, this will also result in more shake in the video.

As far as increasing the shutter speed, I'm not sure how much this will improve stabilization. With a faster shutter you are limiting the amount of light reaching the sensor. For fast action in good lighting, a fast shutter is desirable if you want a sharp image but for low light, it's only going to make the image darker. A slower shutter, 1/30 with a fps of 30, will allow the maximum amount of light to reach the sensor for each frame. Along with shutter, if you are setting it manually, then you will also want to set the ISO. The lower the ISO, 100 is optimum, the better the quality you will record. However, the lower the ISO, the darker the image.

Hi Daniel, i've already tested protune with 1/120sec with iso auto; stabilization is forced to active and the result is acceptable ( 800/1600 iso )...otherwise we need a Gimbal :)

this work on Fw 1.60....2.01 it's more aggressive and forced to turn off EIS

Sorry, I actually don't see a difference between shutter being on auto and 1/120 other than the video becoming so dark you can't make out the shake as much. In both instances the EIS seems to become disabled (as it should be).  It does look a lot better than the 1.6 firmware which is jumpy and jittery, but I don't see how changing the shutter helped. If anything, it made the picture so dark I could no longer make out any detail.

@Anonymous
What method are you using to update your camera?

The best method is going to be manually. https://gopro.com/update

Download the UPDATE.zip folder to your computer and extract the UPDATE folder.

Format your SD card in your computer.

Place the UPDATE folder (not UPDATE.zip) into the SD card. Eject the card and put it in the camera. Turn the camera on and allow the update to complete.

hi all,

just made another set of tests for EIS.

we already know that Hero6 stabilizes 3 axes compared with Hero5 2 axes, and this is visible.

also I remain on the new hero6's firmware 02.01 side, I like what I see.

Wow, EVERYTHING about the Hero6 Black looks better than the Hero5 Black. I wish I would have sold my Hero5 for another Hero6 before it dropped in price (I use my Hero5 on my Karma drone and my Hero6 for hand held/mounted shots). I still like the Hero5 Black, but I love the Hero6. This latest update has only made those feelings stronger.

I'm really torn right now since I just received my GoPro Fusion and I'm having so much fun filming with it I've been neglecting my Hero6. Everything I've seen so far, including the footage I've shot with the Hero6, has me wanting to go out and do some more shooting with it. Problem is, with the Fusion capturing every angle and having excellent low light capability, I haven't had a situation yet where the Hero6 would be a more appropriate camera. It will come, just hasn't yet.

hi Andrea,

trust me, stabilization was on.

hero5 does not stabilize roll axis, only pitch, this makes the difference...and this is seen also in your videos...

hero6 stabilizes both...

this is what GoPRo says, the roll stabilization introduced in hero6:

https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/hero6-black-and-hero5-black-differences

  • Improved image stabilization – Now supported on more resolutions and frame rates while adding in roll stabilization across all FOVs.

How has Image Stabilization improved from HERO5 Black?

  • Video Stabilization on HERO5 reduces vibration in X and Y dimension, and in the Narrow or Medium Field of View (FOV), can also correct for rotational motion. With HERO6 Black, even when in a Wide FOV, we have full stabilization in all three axes, including in 4K30 and 1080p120 modes, which are not stabilized on HERO5. HERO6 Black has dedicated hardware that actively applies de-warping of images based on the motion sensors, vastly reducing warping seen in high-vibration or aggressively stabilized content. This culminates into customer content that will look smoother than ever before, in more modes, under a wider range of uses.

hey! @Anonymous excellent tests!

I tried some tests 2.7K 25fps superview
Same path, entering an equipement room.

PT off

https://youtu.be/TrSAhPoKeUc

PT on - default (meaning ISO max 1600, color GoPro, WB auto, Shutter Auto, Ev 0, Sharp High)

(below only the differences compared with PT default are written)

https://youtu.be/07yXcQE22mM

PT on 1600 flat

PT on 1600 flat native

PT on 800

https://youtu.be/vcq2RlVAI_8

PT on 800 flat

https://youtu.be/bwAcuFoLWC8

PT on 800 flat native

https://youtu.be/gfEKpGrU9d8

in order to test a more fluid images, I increased the fps to 50, and higer the ISO to 1600
equivalent of ISO 800 at 25fps from exposure point of view)

PT on 1600 flat native 50fps

https://youtu.be/GF-mrHwlOsE

PT on 1600 flat native EIS 50fps

https://youtu.be/MdtDdmXYs6c

- it is a clear improvement in noise reduction, starting with PT off.

- PT on 800 flat native remains, in my opinion, the one that gives the best results in low light

- because at ISO 1600, the image is not bad at all, using 1600 flat native and 50fps is a very good balance!

- I wish hero 6 inherit the ISO 1200 from hero5...I think ISO 1200 would have been a very good balance!

- PT off remains a viable option, making all easier.

some conclusions:
- PT on 800 flat native still offers the best quality images in low light
- flat colour offers more details in dark areas as expected
- 1600 is not bad at all in noise reduction
- so the logical next step was to obtain a more fluid movement, using PT on 1600 flat native @50fps - and the result is more than happy
- EIS is not very good even at 50fps...not enough information in a low light image to "anchor" the image - as we already know.

- I wish hero6 to have inherited the ISO 1200 from hero5...somehow I feel would have been a very good balance

same tests at 4K

4k@50fps PT on 1600 flat native
https://youtu.be/MBnvdsJry8U

the good news is we can use 50fps with ISO 1600 flat native with very good results - for an action camera, I see this a big improvement... all we used in low light till now was 25/30fps.

Re: HERO6 Black Update! v02.01

and finally let's push ISO to 3200...here the noise in dark areas makes his presence...

4k@25fps PT on 3200
https://youtu.be/OZvu0WMBUCE

4k@25fps PT on 3200 flat native
https://youtu.be/FqmhjusQEJ0

4k@50fps PT on 3200 flat native - hmmm promising...still noisy
https://youtu.be/WAJKQgoNN6Y

what I learned from these tests.

  • till now ISO 800 PT on (native flat) was the only usable for a decent footage.
  • now seems that ISO 1600 is not bad at all in managing the noise in darker areas, even with PT off.
  • so we do have more alternatives:
---25fps ISO 800 flat native - not a fluid image but good quality
---50fps ISO 1600 flat native - fluid image, a little more noise, usable footage - here I see the biggest gain of v02.01
---25/50fps PT off - handy alternatives

I just did this this evening and I can say that the stabilization in 2.01 looks much worse than 1.6.  However the low light color looks much better.  I was only able to do some quick tests in my poorly lit (and messy) room so I don't really want to post that.  I will go and get some outdoor footage tomorrow morning and post to youtube so you can see the (substantial) difference in the stabilization.

hi all,

just want to add a comparison, to stress what I said, now we can use, in low light, 50fps ISO 1600 compared with 25fps ISO 800, and obtain a more fluid footage.

the footage is made in the same place.

beside the footages itself, where you can see a slightly more noise, I made a screenshot of the advertising panel.

at 25fps, no chance to get a usable frame, due to low fps

at 50fps you can read the panel...much better

@Anonymouswrote:

Hi Robert i think they called that dead pixels or mosaic from the inabilty of the sensor could be wrong

hi,

@Anonymous...

as I was a DSLR user, oh I know those too well...

here is about noise, grain.

a dead pixel is a pixel in the sensor that always gives you a black point/spot... so is dead, does not receive power, or do not "read" the image info, the output is always "0", a black spot.

a hot pixel is a pixel that always give you a "1", a hot spot, but usually only when ISO is pushed to limit, to the highest ISO, meaning the highest sensitivity.

noise is the grain in photo, or the bouncing spots in filming, (coloured or not) induced by the higher ISO.

the normal, native/base ISO is 100 (or 200 in some cases) for the sensor.

at 100, no noise is to be spotted.

when we raise the ISO, we actually amplify electronically the signal received from each pixel from the sensor.

the signal and the noise, both are amplified.

but, now we will see that grainy image.

this is determined by the "noise", an electronic always there weak signal.

if the signal/noise ratio is high, we will see the clean signal.

if the ratio is low, then signal is close to the noise, and the result is grain, noise visible.

the tinier the pixel, the greater the noise.

a large sensor has large pixels (at the same resolution) so noise is less.

an DX sensor will have from the beginning more noise than a FX sensor at the same

in GoPro there is a little sensor, therefore is prone to noise.

one consequence of the noise is the image.frame is not clear, like a blur.

the noise is present more in the darker areas, where, as I said, signal/noise ratio is lower, see the background, where is visible.

Capture.JPG

here is a GIF from 4 photos, taken at different ISO.

the clearer is at lower ISO

you can see how the noise affects the clarity, like a blur, see the inscription on the phone keys.

now, every camera, action or not, apply a denoising algorithm.

that means, directly from the camera, the noise is kept under control, more or less...

what I feel with v02.01 is that ISO 1600 can be used in filming. somehow they enhance the noise compensation algorithm.

till now only ISO 800 gave a decent noise.

sorry, a little bit long post,

robert

Stabilization is worse on 2.01

How do I downgrade to 1.60?

Otherwise I may take it back for a refund to bestbuy.

yeah... the stabilization is worse on 2.01. And that is the reason I bought it. Thankfully I have about 1 day to return it to BestBuy. So... Go pro... please give me the 1.60 firmware instructions... otherwise I will almost certainly return it.

You can dowlnkad the 1.6 firmware and stick it on an SD card and stick it in the camera and turn it on. Check reddit for the firmware.
