I had my GoPro plugged into my laptop and was updating the firmware through GoPro's Quik software when I got a message saying the update failed. My GoPro was stuck in some "updating" state and I couldn't do anything with it or power it off. The only way was to remove the battery. After putting it back in the camera came back on but automatically when to the "updating" state with the red LED blinking rapidly continuously and was stuck there until I removed the battery again. After this, the GoPro became dead. I couldn't power on again after putting the battery back in. I tried almost everything I could find online from different help forums and youtube videos including:
- leaving the battery and SD card out for a few days
- trying to plug in the GoPro to wall or laptop without a battery or SD card
- reformatting the SD card
- trying different batteries, different cables
- holding the power + mode button for 12 seconds or whatever it is
- loading and updating the firmware directly on the laptop using an SD card adapter and then putting it in the camera
I basically tried everything, short of opening up the actual camera and replace the motherboard. In any case, nothing has worked and it's simply bricked. Has anyone successfully recovered a completely dead/bricked HERO4 Silver from this situation before? If so, any advice/suggestions would be appreciated!
I've been talking with GoPro customer service and since it's no longer covered by warranty (had it for about 1.5 years), the best they can offer me is a discount on the HERO5 Black, which after buying extra batteries and the waterproof housing (since my HERO4 stuff isn't compatible), will basically make the discount negligible.
Not to mention I don't really have any confidence in GoPro at all anymore after this incident. Buy a new HERO5 and then what? Hope that any future update using GoPro's OWN software doesn't brick the camera again? Looking online, this doesn't look like an isolated incident. I see other people having the same issues with bricked GoPro's coming out of a failed firmware update.

@Anonymous - It sounds like the update did not complete. If the manual update did not correct the issue, then I'd recommend contacting our Support team directly at https://gopro.com/help/PKBContactus so we ca try to help you out.

@jefft Thanks for the response. I currently have a support case open and so far the only solution that was offered to me was the discount on a new HERO5 camera.
If this issue isn't all that uncommon, and other customers have experienced similar "bricked" GoPros following a failed firmware update, I'm wondering there were any solutions, besides buying a new camera.
If there's some type of lower-level bootloader firmware inside the camera that got corrupted that may be preventing the camera from powering on, I would think there's a way to fix it. If it was a hardware failure then I would understand I'd have to just buy a new camera, but given that it became bricked immediately following a failed firmware update, I'm inclined to think it's the former.

Same issue here, impossible to get through to support without trying over days, chat says 24/7 support but closed Sat and Sun LOL, so far best solution is to give me a discount, less than the 100 bucks they were offerring for an exchange. Sad thing is I got the camera and used it like never as I left it behingd when I moved overseas, it is literally brand new but has the 2.00.,00.00 firmware, the desktop software doesn't recognize it needs an up date, I was instructed to buy an new sd card even though the other is top of the line, it didn't work either just took off the BUSY message, still freezes after turn on even with the manual updateinstalled on SD card, anyone have a way to get a wired firmware up date that might work? Otherwise I have a tadpole anchor and hundreds in waterproof and other accessories, battery etc.

I found a fix at
Followed the directions exactaly and it worked for me, seem to recall having to load ZIADIG drivers and play with settings to get my laptop's usb port to work with the gopro
