I also agree, why can't we edit our posts?  That was supposed to be "frankly a backlight"  Who the hell is this Franky person and is he the real reason our remote is delayed?  --bleep-- you Franky!!!!!

You forgot: don’t advise your new customers that the old remote will no longer work with the H9 so that they buy it and find it out for themselves and spend their money on something that is not longer useful....

Agree with mprera: This whole issue wouldn't be an issue if the decision was announed BEFORE the release of H9 and not after many already bought it. Has it even been officially announced anywhere else except on these forums where customers come after they find out it doesn't not work?

I ask on social media at least once a week either directly on in threads but get zero back. Meanwhile my H7 is still my daily and the H9 just sits on the shelf. My decision is made come next upgrade.

Re: Gopro Hero 9 Smart Remote

@exiiit me too bought a new 9 (after selling my working 8); went to use it as usual since my 3+ with a remote on the handles and couldn't.

bought a 2nd hand 7 since selling the 9 - made a small profit since GoPro shaft their local retailers and a chap needed it the next day for a holiday

now its a BIG ONE FINGER salute to a company that serves profits over people- so they don't sell enough cameras to justify a remote then what..........we don't get one??

you walk into a car dealer ship (Gopro's attitude) - "here's is our new but broken car you can buy at a premium BUT you have to wait for us to fix it before you drive it properly and then wait an unknown period of time till we sell enough so we can build parts to give you what you had before"

closest answer was the remote was depending on the sell through of the H9. so your guess is as good as anyones - my guess is 2022 for a replacement if they still exist

the most PEAR SHAPED NON CUSTOMER FOCUSED BUSINESS on the planet - no support, no answers, no timeline, and everything is so half assed - it's like someone with Alzheimers running it not finshing a project and starts the next one forgetting what they did yesterday. heritage doesn't exist in todays release

Don't know why anyone would want to fund their $125M capital raising after a profitable quarter??? why do they need the cash? dumb investors with no idea i say and with no idea what they are selling; or a heap of refunds to process?? i'll let you read between the lines

Hello @stoutbeach1072. The Smart Remote isn't compatible with the HERO9 Black. We have a remote in the works. However, we do not have an ETA on when it will be available. Updates regarding this will be posted on the website as soon as it is available. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Same as everybody above, having an Hero8 with the remote and working well.  Just got today my new GP9, and I am very disapointed not to be able to make it work with the new GP9.

Can You imagine what some of the Pro’s using GoPro are thinking.. take for instance Jay Leno.. His team uses multiple GoPro’s mounted on and in the Vehicles that he test drives on Jay Leno’s Garage I can’t imagine they Manually start each of those cameras

Re: Gopro Hero 9 Smart Remote

Usually professional crews wait until the tech is proven and trustworthy before upgrading.  In this case they could even be working directly with GoPro and have access to pre-production remotes so they can give feedback about it's design, use and range.

GoPro upgrade their camera's every year and people join right in and upgrade along side them.

However when it comes to a freaking 6+ year old remote FINALLY Being upgraded, everyone is freaking the heck out.  News Flash folks, the original smart remote wasn't that great or that reliable.  I for one will be glad to see a new remote on the market.  I just hope that they put more thought into it than they did the display mod.  I mean please let's have a backlit remote this time around...

I just bought a Hero 9 last week, my first GoPro and bought the remote today, a huge disappointment, why is there a big RED FLAG saying don't buy older remotes? not to mention they don't have the batteries locally or ship them as per IATA laws or sell chargers.

Big disappointment for such an amazing camera from a disappointing company.

The description on the sales page only states Hero 8 and Hero Max and earlier models (7,6,5,4,3,2).  Could be that pages in other countries haven't been updated or corrected yet, but this is also why you are still able to return the remote and get your money back.

That’s ridiculous, in the same boat. I purchased the remote along with hero nine to use with it and now you’re telling me it’s an $80 keychain that’s worthless. Do the right thing go pro and make an update for the original remote to work with hero 9.

Re: Gopro Hero 9 Smart Remote

thats wishful thinking, Gopro's voice is through their marketing department still pushing product over important information feeds and announcements.

Still can't believe they expect customers to keep checking the website for issues and fixes when they can easily email us when its done after registering a camera. they simply just don't care

I'd like to buy another 9 but i just won't till they make the remote work or after 12 months after the new new remote is released to see what a dogs breakfast that turns out to be; - surely its easier for them to make 1 remote happen over apps in 100s if not 1000s of different phones that are just mehh from a functionality point of view

be it old, end of life or whatever reason they feel fit. they don't have a new one so just make do with you have - surely it will make it harder to sell what inventory they have of the current smart remote otherwise - such a stupid & poor business plan - in our business that would be a sackable decision

Re: Gopro Hero 9 Smart Remote

[ New ]

It's disappointing to find out that the smart remote doesn't work with the Hero 9 that's for sure.  The advantage of the remote I find is that it's a lot quicker to connect to the camera than the app is.  Having said that, I never found the connection to be that stable and the more camera's it was connected to, the more issues that popped up (such as saying 3 camera's are all recording when only 2 were....).

In a way, I'm also not sorry the 9 doesn't support the remote as if it did, it would mean years of having the same dodgy issues as above with no improvement.  Yes, it should have been mentioned in easier to see terms that the Smart Remote was not supported, I'm sure that would have saved a lot of confusion and annoyance from customers also.

Still, the Smart remote was released in Nov 2012, probably designed and built with 2010 tech at the time too...   No matter what your feelings are about the remote, surely you have to agree it's long overdue an upgrade (and be grateful there also isn't a new remote coming out every year also...).

So as much as you want to complain about the GP9 not supporting the smart remote, it's not going to change anything.  You would all be better off telling GoPro exactly what the new remote needs to be capable of doing.  Otherwise you're going to have the same people who created this remote fiasco making the design and functionality decisions regarding the new remote... and THAT will lead to disaster and even more unhappy people.

So does anyone want to make any helpful suggestions on what we want from a new remote?  My suggestions are this...

1:  USB-C charging port, no more specialist cables for crying out loud.  Even better, wireless charging!  That way it can be truely waterproof and can be used while wind surfing etc.

2:  Backlight, and a decent one at that.  Heck, even headphones allow to select lighting options these days, a selectable backlight color would be awesome (dark red for night lapse use so your night vision is still usable, bright blue for daylight use etc).  Adjustable brightness needed too.

3:  Easily changeable wrist straps.  Lets do away with itchy scratchy velcro full of loose threads.

4:  Improved connection range and control over multiple camera's.  A small designator in the corner regarding how many camera's are connected and a tick to verify they are ALL recording would be appreciated.

Anyone else think of anything useful that should be included?

That's where I think wireless charging would be a great option.  Imagine being able to just put the remote on a magnetic cell phone charger if you need to recharge the internal battery.  I use a 3 space wireless charging mat at home (1 work phone, 1 personal phone), so dropping the remote on the mat to charge would be really handy.

Thanks for presenting such a well thought out, pointed arguement.  The points you make and examples you referrenced made for a compelling and worthwhile read.

You're being a contraction of "You are" and not indication a possesive statement as to describe ownership of something such as "Your car", "Your Bike", "Your smart remote which obviously doesn't work with a Hero 9 camera".

This afternoon I broke down and Visited the local Zoo and brought alongth3 Hero 9 on a Telesin extendable grip.. I use it to get extreme angles very low or High.. I’m 71 so doing those without a “Crutch” is tough on the old knees .. I used to carry a compact digital camera on a selfie stick plus a high end Canon digital SLR , asi get older I’m having to pare down my load... the pictures & Videos I took today came out great using the Hero 9... but using Voice control was a Pain in the ass I got about 30% of the content I tried for.. My wife stopped me from throwing the camera into the Lions habitat. .. said it would be bad for the big Cats.... Dammit Come on GoPro get us a wirelessremote

https://community.gopro.com/t5/en/Camera-Performance-in-Extreme-Temperatures/ta-p/392974

"For extended recording time in high-performance video modes, capture shorter video clips when in stationary use, and/or limit your use of features that increase power consumption, such as the GoPro App or BacPac accessories. To control your camera remotely at higher temperatures, use the GoPro remote instead of the GoPro App."

But we can only use the app or yell and look like a twit and have extra features turned on so the camera shuts down after 30-45min

Yes very hard to believe the GoPro is not having a solurtion coming... But there is no indication about the compatibility on Heroe 9, except if you "dig" on the Remote instructions (on the web), where you can see that it's working only up to the GP8 ... I am a motorbiker, and I use mostly the GP8 via the remote. So, for today, no way for me to switch the GP8 to GP9 on my bike ..

we don't want to use our phone - your translation didn't work in your favour

our phone is generally worth more than the camera and used for "PHONE CALLS" so mid call its useless and not something you can easily unlock, open the app, wait for syc and do what you want to do - let alone control an external camera outside a cabin - STUPID IDEA from those who don't know what an action camera is actually used for

I'm out too. the brand is getting to far outside it's own compatibility bubble. not using 2 remotes, not using multiple batteries and chargers, multiple mods, housings, floats. its a start again if you want to embrace their new brick

From GoPro. Only works with 8 up so I'm disappointed. That doesn't make any sense because the 8 worked with the old remote.

There is another alternative to the remote control.

With a smartwatch, such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch and the GoPro Shutter Pro app, the H9 is also supported and it works.

Re: Gopro Hero 9 Smart Remote

I just got the new remote, and it works fine with my Hero 9 and my Max, but it looks like I can't pair both cameras at the same time. I liked having two cameras on the same remote. I had a Hero 4 in my kite canopy, and the Max in the kite lines, both on the same remote.

A bit disapointing. Fortunately, I still have my Smart Remote, so I can still use two cameras at the same time.

I guess thats why they call the old one the Smart Remote, and the new one is just The Remote.

Re: Gopro Hero 9 Smart Remote

I can't speak to the MAX, but the new remote has no issues doing multi control with my 8 and 9.

Obviously you have to pair them one at a time.  Once they're both paired and on, go to the menu on the remote itself.  I forget what menu it is (there aren't a lot to choose from...) but youll end up on a screen that lists all paired cameras, and i wanna say the top option wil be 'multi' (or something like that.)  Pick that, and bada bing, it connects to every camera in range that's turned on and previously paired to the remote.

From the same menu you can choose to just control one cam at a time as well.
