I am trying to shoot 6 to 8 hour night lapse sequences. Its winter out so i have connected an external battery to the gopro to make sure it runs all night. Each morning when i bring the camera in i find that it shuts off after an hour or so, still has battery charge, and the external battery still has charge. This has happened 4 times, and 1 time it actually worked all night. Same exact equipment and micro sd card. Running Samsung EVO 128gb U3 card, so capacity not the problem.

Hello @megasurf5522. Could the camera have been overheating? If the camera gets too hot, a message appears on the screen indicating that the camera is shutting down. Was the camera on the Frame? Was it housed in the Super Suit? The dive housing helps retain the heat given off by the camera during operation, and if the battery is in, this could add to the overall heat produced within the camera's immediate environment.
In addition, the SD card used is not listed as one that's compatible with HERO6 Black. See if using one of the recommended cards here will help resolve the issue. Members who have done extended recordings also share that removing the battery prevents any extra heat created.
Let us know what you find out on your end. Thanks!

Ok, after experimenting with various memory cards and battery configurations, it appears that the memory card choice does not matter. Removing the internal battery and running only from an external USB battery seems to solve the problem. I am using the Go Pro in an open frame and in temperatures ranging from 0-30 degrees F, so i would be surprised if overheating is the problem . . . seems more like some power management design flaw between the internal battery and an external power source. Really disappointing. Not sure if there is a software fix for something like this?
That's all i know so far

I do suggest removing the battery if you will be using the camera for very long-term shooting (e.g. Timelapse) to prevent the camera from overheating – at some point, preventing potential damage to the battery as well. Other users have expressed similar suggestion when using external power source for continuous recording.
On a side note, without the battery installed, the camera will eventually turn off the moment that the external power stops.
Feel free to post back if you have any further questions.
