GoPro Session5 - Locking up during WiFi - BlueTooth iOS app operation

Hi,

I find many threads about Sessions generating considerable heat and some topics about them even locking up under various conditions.

 

I experience similar locking up behaviour of our Session5 (S5) after every (full) charge when operating our S5 via WiFi/BlueTooth connected the iOS app.

 

Conditions/ setup under which this inoperability of our S5 occurs:

 

  • Temperarure is around/ above 25oC;
  • S5 body is already hand warm and front metal ring is hot from either being recently(fully) charged or filming in 4K;
  • S5 (FWv2.51.00) lays static on table, not being actively cooled;
  • S5 is connected to iOS GoPro app (v4.6.1) installed on iPhone6-128GB (iOS11.4.1) via WiFi and BlueTooth;
  • SDXC installed in S5 is a SamSung EVO PLUS 128GB (Class10, U3; UHS-I; 90-100MB/RW) formatted in exFAT.

 

Under these circumstances the S5 ALWAYS disconnects from the iPhone/ GoPro app and locks up within minutes after first established a normal connection.

The S5 becomes completely unresponsive for more than half an hour to any long/short button presses on both top- and back-side buttons.

Sometimes flashing red LEDs on both front and back continue in a blinking 1sec on/off fashion when S5 is locked up. 

 

On the contrary, if we actively cool the S5 via:

  • placing S5 front with its hot metal ring directly static on ice-cubes(!) when operating S5 via the connected GoPro app or
  • placing S5 front with its hot metal ring directly in airflow when filming 720p@60fps during a race session or

 

… when is the S5 is NOT warm/ hot from being recently charged/ used, then S5 continuous to operate normally with iOS app without locking up.

 

S5 also regularly locks up when filming in 2160p/4K without (sufficient) cooling airflow aimed directly at its front side.

 

 

To me this sounds like ‘thermal protection’ behaviour of the S5 hardware because of overheating issues!

Could this be due to e.g. too compact/ ineffective hardware construction disabling S5 to dissipate enough heat from its core/processor when getting too hot from charging/ intense usage and not (sufficiently) actively cooled?

 

 

Can anybody confirm this as 'normal' Session behaviour a/o found better ways to remedy probable (over)heating-issues with these lovely small cube cams?

It is not uncommon for the HERO5 Session camera to get hot when recording for an extended period of time, especially with resolutions set to high-performance modes such as 2.7K and higher. Using the camera with the GoPro App further increases the instance of acquiring a high temperature. This eventually leads to shorter recording times. 

 

Did you ever observe the camera to turn off, or give you a warning sign that it is getting too hot? If the camera gets too hot, a message appears on the screen indicating that the camera is shutting down. The camera stops recording, saves your video, disconnects from the GoPro App, and powers off. If this happens, let your camera sit and cool before attempting to use it again. 

 

For extended recording time in high-performance video modes, capture shorter video clips when in stationary use, and/or limit your use of features that increase power consumption, such as the GoPro App. To control your camera remotely at higher temperatures, use the GoPro remote instead of the GoPro App. I hope this helps.

We do not see any warning sign, but indeed it keeps on turning off when (too?) hot. Especially it disconnects constantly in described circumstances: connected to GoPro app a/o non-cooled stationary.

 

Isn't it unacceptable for a finished product that it only does stay functionally connected to the GoPro app, if a user actively cools the front glass panel and outer metal ring with an ice-pack?! Really, any product requiring this kind if (pro-)active cooling by an enduser just to stay 'alive', seems to be having serious out of the ordinary thermal issues (i.e. thermal design flaw), don't you agree?

 

Since we love the tiny form-factor of the Sessions compared to the clunky normal Hero's, we learned how to remedy this thermal issue ourselves: we just added some extra ice to our fridge to keep our overheating S5 functioning at all times! :)

 

Hopefully if GoPro ever decides to release a Session successor (S6?) with a similar or even smaller form-factor, it learned how to remedy  excessive heat under ALL circumstances ... w.o. having S6 to automatically shut down to SOS itself!
