This isn't a hardware issue but a physcial issue.
I am recording rain at the edge of the forest and have rain drops falling and striking the mic ports and it's distractive to an otherwise amazing set of footage. Anyone have any ideas how to guard the mic from such droplets (distraction) ?

Here is one, but there are others to choose from https://www.amazon.com/Taisioner-Windslayer-Housing-Protective-Reduction/dp/B07JB582PB/ref=pd_lpo_sb...
The foam covers are cheap and will improve your audio.

Head over to amazon.com and look up windslayer for GoPro Hero 5,6,7 . . . .

Thanks for the recommendation. I'd rather see something over the top mic OR maybe like a video I watched, with the PT turned on just turn it to front wind mic only but therein I am concerned about losing those crisp rain drops striking the leaves and trees. This prep work is for a larger work that comes this fall. I may have to use external audio and am ordering all that hardware for another project aways.
