GoPro Hero 7 Black video glitches

[ New ]

Hi all!

Today I've tried recording some POV on my mtb ride and I've discovered strange video glitches:

https://youtu.be/gYtx1k7stnI?t=57

and

https://youtu.be/IgRoB2y2zzk?t=17

I've used GoPro Hero 7 Black with next settings:

Resolution: 4k

Framerate: 24fps

Stabilization: Auto

View: SuperView

Protune: On

Shutter: Auto

ISO min: 100

ISO max: 400

SD card: SDSQXAF-064G-GN6MA

Firmware: v1.51

In davinci resolve I found that in both videos there 3 issues in next order:

  • 3 duplicated frames,
  • 1 frame with a stutter on the top of the frame
  • 1 duplicated frame not in its possition (duplicates frame before 3 duplicated frames but appears after frame with a stutter)

These issues don't appear in all videos

Anyone knows how it can be fixed?

Thanks for the update. I've found 60fps works best. In lower lighting, I lock the shutter at 1/240 and adjust the ISO, locking the MIN/MAX to the same value. For low light, evening or indoor use, I generally use 4K (4:3)/24fps.

The first glitch might be from writing error to SD card. Not very confident in that guess, but it wouldn't be the first time an SD card caused something line this. Although you are using a recommended card, they can still have periods of not keeping up or have their own manufacturer issue. More likely, the camera processor just glitched. If it's very rare that this happens, I wouldn't worry about it. If it happens frequently, then you might need to exchange the camera. A manual update of the firmware and a factory reset after is a good idea to try for now.

The second video looks to being caused by low light. A slower shutter and Hypersmooth stabilization do not mix. Try locking the MIN and MAX ISO at 400 or even 800 in lower light. Alternatively, film in 60fps with a shutter locked at 1/240. If you want to stick with 4K/24fps, then using the (4:3) format when in lower light might also be beneficial as it uses a less aggressive stabilization.

I've manually updated firmware, formatted sd card and done factory reset.
Tried today with increased max ISO to 800 but experienced the same issue during walking. Can superview be the cause of this issue?

It might be contributing, but blur/warping is usually a result of the Hypersmooth trying to make adjustments with less frames and longer exposure times. In bright lighting it tends to work best as the camera uses a faster shutter so each frame is more sharp and crisp. Having more frames allows for more subtle adjustments between each frame. Since Superview is using the entire sensor, it's possible that the camera has less workable area, although the 10% crop should be compensating for that. Since Superview is really just 4:3 pinched at the top and bottom and then dynamically stretched to a 16:9, I suspect that it might also be more susceptible to distortion, and therefore making it more difficult for the camera to accurately hold the frame. I'm really not sure about that though.

So later today I've tried recording footage in 30fps with same other settings and this issue didn't occur

GoPro video glitches have ruined countless shots filming in 4K 60 fps. GoPro has been very disapointing in their "support" or lack there of.

Re: GoPro Hero 7 Black video glitches

Contacted support again a few years after my initial contact and I am now once again angry! GoPro has just terrible "solutions" or non at all. When I first got the camera I was asked to send it in however I was on the road at the time filming for Official Best Of America travel series and could not send it in as I needed something. However after it ruining many shots I simply never used it again for a long time and I recently decided to use it again and of course the video glitches were once again ruining shots so I thought I would contact GoPro again only to be told I'm out of the warrantee window and I would get a coupon for $100 off your top of the line newest camera. Gee that's great. More bad camera equiptment I need to buy was the solution for GoPro. I find that crap. Then I was told I could pay $79 to get another gopro 7 black. Pay more money for a camera that never worked right and now is outdated? Another crappy "solution" from GoPro.

We are often asked what cameras we use for our work, and we will be doing a public video release about what we use and I will make sure we go out of our way to point out we DO NOT AND WILL NOT use GoPro because of and then I will summerize my horrible experience with your company and in the meantime recommend DJI's action camera instead which I wish I would have gotten to begin with and I would be having no issues I am quite sure as I have not had any issues with all of the drones and other things I have gotten from them, and I would'nt have had ruined footage and two ridiculous wastes of my time and getting angry dealing with GoPro. I hope your company goes out of business as it should and certainly no professional should gamble with GoPro equiptement when there are better options out there.
