GoPro Hero 7 Black and Wifi connections (Smart Remote-Wifi and iPhone X)

[ New ]

Since initial purchase nearly 4 monts ago and after two s/w updates to the camera, i still cannot get a stable wifi connection to either my Smart Remote or my iPhone X.  All have the very latest s/w version insalled, on the camera i even did two fresh manual reload of the s/w.  I've tried using the two bands (5Ghz and 2.4Ghz), ensured there was no likely interference from other transmitters to no avail.  I also tried different (GoPro recommended) types of SD Card from 32, 64 to 128MB and still the intermittent connections persists.  I have experimented with various settings as some users reported that disabling the LOW LIGHT function would provide a solid connection (not sure why that would be but i had to try something). No matter what i try the camera will drop out and the Smart Remote will be on Wifi search mode.  I have to dismount from my motorcycle and reboot everything.  Sometimes all i have to do is turn off the camera and it will reconnect.  other times i have to try to repair the camera to the Remote or iPhone.  it is never the same.  I even tried running with no batt in the camera, feeding it from a USB power source thinking perhaps it was the heat.  NOTE that i use the GoPro 3.5mm mic adapter as i have a mic installed in my helmet used to motovlog.  Also NOTE that i have a GoPro Session 5 with a very solid wifi connection - it simply stays on no matter what. SOLID.  I picked up the GP7HB because of the additional features such as hyperstab and GPS but i'm getting very frustrated.  My last ride was just over 300 km and i had to dismount 15 times to reset the connection.  I'm now thinking i should have gone to Garmin's VIRB as it is integrated into my GPS connection.....

I'm having the same issue as well.  GoPro support replaced my mic/power adapter because as soon as I connect power to it the smart remote will lose it's connection. Even with the replaced mic/power adapter this problem persists.

I can reproduce the issue 100% of the time using these steps:

1) 4k60p, wireless on, full factory reset

2) pair smart remote

3) verify smart remote will turn on/off camera and record

4) attach mic/power but DO NOT connect power.  Just external mic.  Everything works perfect with the remote.

5) Connect USB power to mic/power adapter.  Tried several USB power supplies and cables, all are in working order.

6) Once power is connected I can power up the camera with the smart remote but as soon as I hit record the camera appears to reboot and wireless connection to smart remote is lost permenantly.  The remote enters a "searching" state.  I have to pair the smart remote to the camera, but will die once again if power is applied to the mic/power adapter.

Here's my test showing the problem: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1StPyAudzt8pBmQyAMWawUziwhGWSDe0A

I’ve done testing all weekend and I’ve narrowed it to the exact same issue you have using two separate adapters. I tested 4 different power bank and one was actually cutting out (power interruption) and would kill WiFi in the process. Finally using two of my more expensive power banks I was able to keep the link stable until the camera battery reached 100%. At this point I think the software said stop feeding power and bam, no more WiFi. So the last 5 hours have worked fine with the camera battery removed. This was the power is continuous and the WiFi connected solidly. Thanks so much for your input. It is really helpful

WOW, that's crazy!  I tried a better power supply with a 2.1A output last nite and it somewhat worked.  This time the GoPro actually froze on me in the process and lost wifi and I had to pull the battery.  Then erase all connections and re-pair.

The smart remote is terribly unreliable.

Here's my tests last night trying 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz settings, battery and no battery, power via mic/power adapter and power directly to the gopro.  Wifi band made no difference. Battery made no difference but it never got charged to 100% like you did.

What power supply are you using?  I'd love to know which model you're using since it's way more stable than what I'm doing.

Part 1 tests: GoPro froze, tests with wifi band and battery made no difference

https://youtu.be/u5bCGRXGf1M

Part 2 tests: GoPro frozen and required battery to be pulled, got it working with better power supply but swapping to different power loses wifi communication to remote. Lost pariing over and over again.

After multiple chat sessions, I was able to get a GoPro rep to escelate this issue to their "specialist".  Fingers crossed we'll figure out the issue(s) here.  Seems like there are at least two scenarios where WiFi connection is lost to smart remote.

I used a Mophie 12800mAh providing 2.4A and an EECO 20000mAh providing 2.4A and QC3 power. Both are premium power cells and worked without any issues except when the battery reached 100%. At that point the WiFi link would break. So the solution is to remove the battery from the camera. I also found that one of my other power back had a loose connection at the USB port causing an interruption of power.

My theory is that as soon as there is a break in power supply the WiFi resets. I’ve yet to try this theory without using the 3.5mm mic adapter. I’ll do that next time I’m home.

Thanks again for sharing your trouble shooting info.

GoPro support has asked us to try the same tests minus the mic/power adapter to see if it is causing the wifi disconnection issues or not.  I also gave them a link to this thread in my ticket so hopefully their specialists will refer to what we discover here.

Eric, i was able to replicate the issue with external power plugged in directly into the camera. As soon as the external power is interrupted and reestablished the camera will either freeze, reboot and repair the file or just reboot. The WiFi connection is then lost and will not resume on its own without another pairing. So if your power bank power is in anyway interrupted or if the camera detects a power fluctuation it will reset itself or freeze.

I was also able to repeat the reset with the camera battery at 100% when on external charge. My theory is that when the batt reaches full capacity it sends a signal to stop charging and as soon as the external power source resumes (when int batt lvl dips below 100%) it causes an interruption and the camera shuts off and WiFi connection is terminated requiring re pairing

I have an open case with gopro tech support to investigate this as we can easily reproduce the issue 100% of the time. Reference Case: 06420802

Thank you for looking into it. The external power adapter fails 100% of the time so we could try a different one.

Please let me know if you need additional tests to verify. Thanks

i have tried with two diff mic adapter and the results are the same.  As soon as the internal battery reaches 100% while on external power, the WiFi connection is reset.  This is only an issue with GPH7 Blk.  I have no issue with the Session 5 running on ext.power with mic adapter, the WiFi connection is solid in that case.

@risharktiburon I think that is a seperate and additional issue.  My batteries never reach 100% and the GoPro fails 100% of the time using external power adapter and external power.  Everything from a 2.1A power pack to a 2.0A Samsung power adapter.  Wi-Fi disconnects upon starting recording.

I recommend we start a new thread about your issue, and contact GoPro support about it so they can have a seperate case # to reference.  Because we both want that issue fixed too! :)

Thank you for sharing, @risharktiburon. I agree with @ericjohnsonaz in terms of getting the issue communicated with Support for a case creation. This way, details about the particular issue, as well as tests will be organized and documented in the case which the team will look into as well. You may reach Support by phone or chat through https://gopro.com/help/ContactUs . Thanks!

Thanks.  if you read the original post, which i raised, the issues are essentially the same.  Dropped WiFi connection when using the GoPro 3.5mm mic adapter (not power adapter).  There is enough documented history and information to recreate the problem in one of your test labs and update the software code to allow for uninteruppted wifi communication regardless of power supply (as long as there is enough)

hmm  I used the smart remote while connected to external power via mic adapter it went for a full 6 hours.

I found that the cable I used from the power adapter to the external power source made a huge difference.

but I did notice all kinds of weird stuff when I had the battery installed and connected to the USB power source.

Have you tried removing the battery and running straight off the USB power source via the mic adapter?

Once I did that the weird shut offs stopped happening.  I think it's related to buggy power mangement code.

The worst part of doing the external power via the mic adaper is the audi is .5 seconds out of sync.  It's all probably related the buggy firmware in the Hero 7..........
