GoPro Hero 7 Black - Overheating

[ New ]

Have had a Hero 3, Hero 3+, Hero 5.  Purchased the Hero 7 Black through a "trade up" of the Hero 3 in January.  First big use, the camera froze making a 4k video - I missed the shot.  Next big use was a long time-lapse.  The camera froze again after about 10 minutes.  Have used for short videos and photos, but I haven't trusted it for anything big until recently and the camera froze again.  It's very hot when it freezes. When I try to turn it off, the camera beeps and the LEDs flash, but it stays on.  I have to pull the battery to turn it off.

Here's what I've done:

  • Turned off WiFi, voice control, Protune, stabilization.
  • Purchased a new GoPro (branded) battery.
  • Using a new SanDisk Extreme Plus 128GB MicroSDXC (I think this is on the list of approved SD cards), newly formatted.
  • Followed all guidelines in the "If your camera freezes" guidelines.
  • Followed all suggestions in the multiple forum posts regarding overheating/freezing.
  • Manually performed updates.
  • Removed the battery and ran the camera from USB power only.

For each of these tests, I allowed the camera to cool and ran the test over the air conditioning vent. Each time when it froze, it was hottest between the lens and front display - almost too hot to touch.  Here are the results:

  • 1440, 30 - 8:09 minutes before freezing;
  • 4K, 30 - 6:12 minutes before freezing;
  • 960, 120 - 7:38 minutes before freezing;

Photo Time Lapse:

  • 1 shot every 0.5 seconds - 6,817 shots before freezing.
  • 1 shot every 1 second - 2,515 shots before freezing.

The Hero 5 still works well, performs better than the Hero 7 Black, and never freezes.  But I'd like to use the features of the Hero 7.  Any thoughts?

Sell and buy DJI Osmo Action. Briefly and to the point.

I’d also switch to DJI. Freezing issues have been a Gopro issue since Gopro Hero 5 Black and even predates the GP1 chip.

I have solved my overheating issues by using an aftermarket aluminum case from Amazon. The case acts as a heatsink and is very effective in reducing the temperature near the lens to allow long duration 4k recording in sunlight.

My setup involves a homemade mount inside a bucket with a remote control servo that is covered by an acrylic dome. This goes on the roof of a vehicle to allow me to capture video of storms. My 7 Black would shut down fairly quickly in direct sunlight with the dome on. The aluminum case has solved that problem allowing me to shoot hours of 4k Timewarp or 4k 30fps footage.
