GoPro Hero 5 storage

I recently bought the GoPro Hero 5 Black and was comparing to my previous camera, the Hero 3+ Black. The Hero 5 on the same 64gb SD card and same exact video settings (1080p60 Superview), gets only 2 hours and 30 minutes of footage. While the Hero 3+ gets 4 hours and 30 minutes. Why does ProTune take up almost 2 hours of footage?

Re: GoPro Hero 5 storage

Protune bumps the Mbps from 30 to 45 which is considerably larger. With Protune off the Hero5 will film at 1080p/60 Superview for 4 hours and 22 minutes at 30 Mbps on a 64GB card. When Protune is turned on the recording is at 45Mbps and on a 64GB card the recording time is reduced to 2 hours 56 minutes. If Protune audio is on, a seperate audio file is also created and this recording time is shortened further as more data is being stored. I don't know how much, if any, GPS data from the Hero5 also contributes to a larger file.

Hero3+ has a max of 45 Mbps while the Hero5 is 60 Mbps which creates considerably larger files. A higher Mbps is preferred for higher quality footage but it does come at the expense of larger files taking up more storage space.
