GoPro Hero 5 - mismatch between photo orientation (porttrait/landscape) and picture metadata

Hi,

All is started when I have noticed that the images captured with the Hero5 were not correctly rotated (wrong landscape/portrait orientation) by several image processing software (under Linux OS).

After digging a little in the community forum (and few unsatisfactory explanations) I've started my own analysis.

I've cross checked the metadata embedded in the pictures generated by my Hero5 against pictures generated by other cameras that I own (for the record, a Nikon DSLR and a Panasonic P&S camera) and the comparison leads me to the following conclusion.

Correctly visualized pictures have EXIF metadata "Orientation" and "scene Capture type" correctly inserted (according with the camera orientation), while my Hero5 picture metadata are stucked to the following values:

  • "Orientation"= "top, left"
  • "Scene Capture Type" = "Landscape"

My Hero 5 is running 2.60 firmware and the autorotation is (of course) enabled.

Looking forward for comments

Best,

Daniele

Re: GoPro Hero 5 - mismatch between photo orientation (porttrait/landscape) and picture metadata

Hello @danielea14032

Thank you for sharing the results that you gathered. We will forward this information to the team and will keep you posted once we hear back from them. By any chance, will you be able to provide examples for the mismatch in terms of the actual photo captured against the orientation setting in the camera? Those would be a great help.

Many thanks,
Marius

Re: GoPro Hero 5 - mismatch between photo orientation (porttrait/landscape) and picture metadata

Hi Marius,

Please find as attachment 2 pictures.

Same subject, one is shooted in "landscape" (the Hero5 is horizontal), the other in "portrait" (the Hero5 is rotated 90°).

The result is the same regardless the setting of the camera "auto rotation" parameter.

My point is that the 2 pictures are presenting the same values both for "Orientation" metadata (in both pictures set to "Horizontal" aka "Top Left" ) and "Scene Capture Type" (in both pictures set to "Landscape").

In the same shooting situation, other cameras properly equipped with orientation sensors (like GoPro I presume) use the formentioned EXIF metadata according with the EXIF specification.

BTW, if can be useful, at this link you can find the values that these metadata should record according with the position of the camera.

Please let me know if there is something wrong with my camera, or with my understanding of the camera features/behaviour, or...something else ;-)

EDIT: The forum web interface seems to not allow more than one attachment, therefore I've attached the "portrait" picture.

Best,

Daniele

Re: GoPro Hero 5 - mismatch between photo orientation (porttrait/landscape) and picture metadata

Thank you, @danielea14032. I took sample pictures using a HERO5 Black camera and observed the same thing. I will get this to the team for a closer look. Thanks!
